@@markku6 I was also wondering what they will do with batteries that lost it's full capacity. You just get new a new battery and the old one will have an upgrade to gain its full capacity? Or they just throw it away and you have a new battery almost for free? I can't imagine how this system will work

One which you pay extra (nearly 9k) to own a certain capacity let’s say 75 KWh battery, the other being Nio owns the battery and you pay around $150 per month (including 2 swaps per month). Benefits of buying is it’s a one off cost, but you don’t get 2 free battery swaps per month (a swap isn’t that expensive, like $10 + electricity costs on par with other local competitors). Problem with buying is you can’t change into another battery capacity (100 KWh) without buying a new one (another 9k), whilst subscription payers can just upgrade there monthly plan or downgrade each month to fit their needs. No matter if you bought the battery outright or on a subscription. All old batteries that had been determined by the battery station to be obsolete or at their end of life will be removed from circulation and you’ll get a new one for essentially free (same capacity to what you bought outright or for free). The old battery is at least officially taken back to Nio’s factories in China and recycled (don’t know how it’s recycled).

This is a huge improvement not having to get out of your car during the swap or have a technician drive your car in and out of the swap station. Would be a little better if the swap station functioned more like a drive-through opening where you can queue your nio to autodrive and swap while in line, be able to leave your car to get coffee or use washroom and have the car auto park after the swap, but I guess it depends on the terrain.

I think just to have the option of swaping is awesome. But it is cheaper to install "normal" charging stations on parking areas. I see it more like a chance to keep your car updated when a new battery is available. If NIO will go with a dealer network they will have a swap station on their ground for example. In Shanghai it might be different.

For NIO, you can opt to buy the EV without the battery at a much lower price, then you subscribe to the least capacity battery say 75KWh as BaaS for city driving daily at lower monthly subscription fee. When come to long weekend holiday, you can swap in with a larger capacity battery say 150KWh with additional few days of rental fee for long distance drive. With these swapping options and flexibilities, you can maintain a higher resell value of your EV as you won't face battery degradation and depreciation of battery cost. How abt that?

I really hope to see it on the streets in Europe. Once you try EV it’s impossible to think I would get some combustion engine car. And battery swap can solve so many issues: range anxiety , quick charge, charging with no garage, and also battery size. Bio is not talking about but what about having varied battery capacity. Eg for city life- use low capacity battery when just driving around and have an option to swap in the larger for longer trips. This would make stations to charge smaller batteries faster, car can be a bit lighter and overall cost of operation can be reduced. This is really great tech especially in this transition period and cities where charging network is not yet there or people park on the street.

I have a large position accumulated between 7.7-9 this summer and I must admit that despite my 30 years of experience in asset management I did not see the correction from 16 to today's levels coming. I think this decline will only stop when they (the shorts) have decided to do so. the fact that a good number of news are not (voluntarily) relayed by Bloomberg obviously does not help. However, from my point of view, NIO has extremely significant upside potential that many underestimate. Yes, it does support it, AFAIK in China they support 4 options: Battery Swap, Regular Charging, NIO person to pick your car up/charge/return and finally charging vans that come wherever you are to charge your car directly.

How is dirt managed? That's a lot of moving parts and especially in winter with salted roads. How is this managed? Can this be done without the driver sitting in their car? Seems like an unnecessary risk. How is fire safety done? Do ye use halon fire suppression? Chemical fires are tricky, I have so many questions and maybe a few tips on things I've been thinking about myself.

Reason why there are long wait times is because this type of tech is not subsidized. Once governments start to invest in NIOs tech they will become more scalable. 100k gas stations in China so imagine if there was 100k battery swap stations.
