This was the song that got the spot for Nirvana. The guys from subpop heard this demo tape and specifically this song and the 3:50 scream was what convince them for sign Nirvana. The rest is history.

The drummer is Dale Crover from the Melvins, Dave didn’t join the band until September of 1990.

Doom Pop. That's what Nirvana was trying to achieve in late 80s. Krist Novoselic mentioned the term in some interview. Low tuning, Black Sabbath doom riffs, with The Beatles pop vibe. Love it!

This was from nirvanas first studio session in january 1988, they recorded 10 songs, most of them ended up on incesticide and bleach, dale crover was the drummer

This song was recorded in 1988. Dave wasn’t the drummer till 1990. The drummer in this I believe his name is Chad.

Informative/great review and I guess your score before you said haha. But, to clarify, this song was NEVER given to records executives to review, etc. This song was written BEFORE Bleach. There is old footage of Nirvana playing this song at a Radio Shack after store hours lol to rehearse. Kurt when on record that he never liked this song and its one of those that written and shelved and then leaked really when Outcesticide was released back in the day after Kurt's death. I don't think Kurt ever intended for this to be released on an album. Maybe like a boxset 30 years later or something with b-sides, rarities or those "demos." But, great review!

The first time I heard this was on Outcesticide, which was a bootleg in my brothers bedroom. He had taken me to the Marilyn Manson/Hole show earlier that day and I got to party with his college friends which was huge because I was only in high school. At the time this was the only "new" Nirvana songs you could hear for obvious reasons. Unfortunately I still have his copy because it was the last time I saw him alive before he od'd. So this song hits different for me, Kurt didn't even like this song it was pre-Bleach. Sorry to be a "Downer" RIP brother and Kurt.

P.S. It wasn't Dave it was Dale Crover of the Melvins on drums

this song was recorded in 1988, one year before the release of bleach, I read somewhere that kurt cobain didn't like this. small clarification, dave grohl didn't join nirvana until 1990.

I think this could have been on bleach honestly, a couple songs from bleach could have been removed

If You Must is such an interesting tune. It's the only officially released Nirvana song/Kurt composition in 6/8, first of all! It was the first track of their first properly recorded studio session, on January 23 1988 and was played live at least a couple of times early that winter/spring, but seemed to quickly fall out of favour as the band wrote new and frankly better material during the course of the year. A funny tidbit from Kurt's journals: he said that he hated this song because it reminded him too much of Bon Jovi! I've never totally understood that comment, since it obviously sounds nothing like that, but I think it might provide a bit of insight into who actually "killed" the song. I tend to agree with your assessment although as a fan with an emotional attachment to the song I'd probably rate it a little higher, but I can't disagree that it is a lesser song in their catalog. Some fantastic screams from Kurt on this recording though 🤘🏻

I've always loved this particular Nirvana deep cut, especially when you have a drummer as good as dale crover on it.

The tone/feel of the track reminds me of Primus's Sailing the Seas of Cheese album, if that makes sense (especially the opening).

I think this one probably would’ve done well in the 70’s. It’s got the Pink Flloydish kinda vibe but with a little more modern, punkish style. Maybe I’m wrong, but it just seems like it would’ve done well in that period of early acid rock.

This is one of Nirvana’s earliest songs..Dale Crover (Melvins) on drums…I like it but can understand others that don’t. I love Kurt’s scream in this. Probably a 6.8-7.0 for me.

Kurt didn’t like this one very much from what I remember. Not one of their greatest but there are things I like. Guitar, bass and drum sounds and the wild vocal, the ups and downs in energy. I listen to Nirvana all the time and this isn’t usually one of them.

Hey David! I know you like live performances…You should check out Nirvana: Big Cheese, Live @ Rhino Records. A show at a record store in front of probably 15 people. 2+ years before Nevermind and not the best audio but very cool to see where they came from.

Truth be told not a bad sounding demo I've heard popular bands release official albums that sounded crappy than this haha And as always Dave is holding down the groove without over playing although some of the fills he's adding as the song progresses are very Dave-ish😅 Krist's bass tone is so dirty it needs to be put in handcuffs haha I agree Dave this isn't one of their best songs even though Kurt's vocal lines did have a catchy quality to them 🤘✌️🖤
