Please remember it's the Meat Puppets playing the guitars.

Like Kurt can do better 😂 let's be honest

I beg to differ with you on this one. This is one of my favorite albums of all time and it introduced me to a lot of artists who I would have otherwise never even heard of.

This was a Meat Puppets track. Kurt was a fan and had them come out to cover it together.

MTV was freaking about Nirvana's set list not having hits. But Kurt knew exactly what he was doing with the covers and made all new ones. From David Bowie to Leadbelly and the Vaselines and the Meat Puppets. When Kurt Cobain covers your song, it becomes a tribute to you and his. This was a risk and they barely rehearsed. Kurt was human and nervous about the entire show. They were going to do it themselves but it wasn't working. But it's beautiful. Tell me you have never played with a quarter as a pick.
@THEDavidHeretic2 сағат бұрын
I actually have used a quarter and a nickel as picks before, you use what you can in times of desperation. I've even used a tab off a soda can as a pick before....wouldn't recommend that one, sliced up my thumb pretty good.

Love or hate it, this was just Nirvana's image, never took themselves to serious. Being such a laid back song, not much he could really do. I've read he was super nervous about this whole performance.

Kurt once said that he felt naked without a guitar. He had to play a whole concert in Nirvana's earlier days since he broke it. I actually always liked this song though. Call me crazy. I'm not a music analyst, just a subjective opinion. You do point out some things though that I never have recognized and agree with.

I was lucky to get to see the Meat Puppets open for Stone Temple Pilots back in ‘94. I remember them playing Backwater. But everything was turned up to ear piercing levels so it was hard to narrow all the songs down.

Fair points, i respect your opinion. For some reason i always liked this and i cannot even give reasons why, i just do. I would give it a 7.0 under your scale. Far from their best but i enjoy it.

Oh me and lake of fire are much better covers of the meat puppets from this show

I agree with you but based off of his reaction here I don't think he'd be very kind to them.

@@darensparks Lake of Fire......maybe. David surprises me at times. Kurt is definitely more enthusiastic while singing Lake of Fire.

Love this track. Couldn’t disagree more. Also, Kurt “not caring” was the whole idea - don’t take it too personal. They sold millions of albums and affected the culture with this approach. Keep that in mind - whether you personally like that or not.

Those are all legit points, from a musician with lots of live performing experience. I’m sure Kurt never considered himself a professional, or wanted to be. He also never took care of his voice, claiming in interviews that he chugged cough syrup in the studio. Seems like the Meat Puppets were on a similar level, and maybe that was one of the reasons Kurt felt comfortable with them. And I agree about being dedicated to the performance- if I’m trying to do a vocal cover I demand a certain level of myself. You hold yourself to making a strong effort. Maybe Kurt could’ve developed some professionalism as years went by, but he obviously didn’t stick around long enough for that.

Not surprised you're not into the meat puppets, but they're awesome imo. Super unique and influential songwriting (the song they're covering came out on SST in 1984). I don't think your psychoanalysis of Kurt and his demeanor is very accurate or insightful.

I understand where you’re coming from, but with the persona of Kurt Cobain and the Nirvana image, I’m wondering what Kurt should’ve done during this performance? Dance around stage to a laid back song? Anyways keep up the good work friend!

Heh it was not the best from that show. I actually didn't like it at all at first when the CD came out. But, I knew somebody in high school that loved it. I personally thought it was too goofy and yodelly for my tastes back then. It is a Meat Puppets cover with the Meat Puppets contributing to their own cover (so it is really Nirvana plus Meat Puppets foing a Meat Puppets song and Kurt was just doing vocals. This track never jived with me. Lake Of Fire, another one with the Meat Puppets, is quite a bit better. These aongs were done all in one take which is kind of cool to think about.

I listened to the meat puppets version of this song, and the outro is way better. Still. I don't think the vocal style fits that much.

I agree it was the worst song of that MTV unplugged, he was a depressed person and he always looked like this.

I heard Kurt had adhd which is why he’s moving side to side on that damn chair. Yeah that really wasn’t the case when he had his guitar at this show. Edit: Also knowing Kurt Cobain, of course he looks depressed. It’s why he killed himself. He has to be the most depressed artist of all time.
