So this is what an early Pen Cap Chew show was like! One blond dude screaming his head off most of the show. One long haired dude bashing the drums hard and one really tall dude playing bass. Luckily, they had good songs and Kurt had a versatile singing voice. He would go from smooth to rough in a heartbeat. The crazy thing is there were actually a few songs played that would end up on Nevermind later. No one knew at the time that Kurt would come up with that juggernaut of an album. You can hear bits and pieces in these early shows like Polly, Lithium, Breed, and In Bloom. It was like a preview of coming attractions but no one knew what a classic album Kurt would deliver later. Then when it came out, they exploded in popularity. Suddenly they were huge and the biggest and hottest band in the world. Then they put out one more album and imploded. Kind of an abrupt and bad ending. No one could predict Kurt’s demise either. What a tragic waste of life and talent.

Yeah, those performances are great. Maybe an unpopular opinion here, but I feel like they really lose something on the big stage, where they can't lock in with the audience and with one another the way they do here. And I feel like the fact that they were still recognizably part of a "scene" at this point both helped ground them and, in a video like this, underline what's so special about them. 25:55 "Kurt Mad AF" that's because that guy tried to steal Kurt's Wallet twice... Once during the Third Verse of "Floyd the Barber" at 24:43 You can see he was trying to reach In Kurt's left back pocket to steal his wallet, though Kurt's wallet was in right back pocket. Which is why you see Kurt spit at him before he jumped off the stage. Then he tried again during the beginning of "Big Cheese" which you listed as Kurt Mad AF at 25:55 but Kurt was ready for him this time, which is why Kurt duck under when that guy put his arm around Kurt, and kicked him and semi-hit him with the guitar before he got off the stage again. But after these 2 failed attempts you don't see him anymore either he got ejected from the venue, or he gave up trying to steal Kurt's wallet and stopped coming up on stage. But that's a real piece of shit move going to a bands show, and then come up on stage and then try to rob them... Real scumbag.

@@elenixatz Absolutely, Kurt had good reflects like you can obviously see Kurt has his wallet in his back right pocket hooked up to one of those wallet chains, but that guy kept trying to reach for the back of Kurt's left pocket. First time during Floyd the Barber Kurt Spits on him, and the second time when he tried to pull the trick of putting you arm around someone while snatching their wallet with your other hand, but Kurt was prepared and ducked down and got out of it in seconds and then kicked the guy and went to hit him with the guitar meanwhile still going back to sing...but becuz of him most of Big Cheese got fucked up, as Kurt's playing the Verse and Krist and Dave are playing the Chorus and when Kurt plays the Chorus Krist and Dave are playing the Verse which cause Kurt to just stop singing the second verse as their timing is way off, and then waited to get back in time with each other....

@@drewa1999 Twice I’ve seen a kid severely injured by stage diving. The first time was in 1990 at a club in Houston where a kid climbed the speaker cabinets at the corners of the stage where he was about twenty-five feet in the air and he came backwards down. Since he was so high up, the crowd just opened up and he landed head first on the concrete. The sound of his neck breaking was loud enough for the whole crowd to hear over the music. The second time was at Lollapalooza ‘93 during Ministry’s set and the kid had a very severe back injury. The band never stopped playing but the lead singer, Al Jourgenson, pointed at him and laughed maniacally through the microphone as they took him away on a stretcher. I had three cracked ribs and gashes on my legs from a barbed wire fence that had been pulled down and ended up in the pit. It shredded my brand new Ministry shirt I had just bought. I stitched it back up and proudly wore that shirt throughout the rest of High School and college like it was a souvenir of war. That was one of the best shows I ever attended.

@@negativeindustrial Thanks for sharing. There is footage of a guy stage diving at an early FUGAZI show and the whole pit just moved away. Had to have gotten really hurt. Always wondered if that show promted Ian to ban aggressive moshing/stage diving. Dinosaur Jr had a great pit when I saw them. Everyone was just having fun, not trying to hurt anyone. Only downside was a dude spilled a can of beer down my back. Not sure how he thought open beer and moshing fit together. My shirt from that show is now proudly full of holes.

Bet Dave never needed the gym either he just went for it on every show and session, one of the best rock drummers ever in my opinion. Simple beats butwith super whip crack snare and the most intelligently placed fills, especially a bit later in his tenure. Fills can sometimes be misplaced and too busy but his are sublime and later on became hooks in their own right

Outstanding. It's a blessing and curse for me to watch these, though, being that I was too young to know about Nirvana. It makes me legit bummed that I missed out on this era. At their peak, these guys were so powerful.

Most did not see them at their peak. As early as 92 drugs crept in and ruined Kurt’s energy. Very very very few people saw Nirvana at their best, and even if you were alive then, you probably would’ve seen them at their worst or known about them only a couple of years before m Kurt died.

These videos are important for nirvana and their legacy. I was born 2 years after he died so I don't have the knowledge of the impact they had on culture besides what is shown in documentaries, but they aren't the best way to truly understand the band. I personally had nirvana all wrong just going by what I saw in docs. All they cover was the impact nevermind had, how fame affected them, and his suicide. As for Kurt cobain the guy, he is grossly misrepresented in most documentaries I've seen. He's painted as this scared, meek, fragile, sad, and always cynical guy who hated everything, but seeing some lesser known interviews on KZbin show different. Videos like this when he was hungry and passionate do the same. The fame and drugs got to him in the latter years but the way history paints it made me believe that was just him. I'm glad to see that wasn't the case. These old concert videos have become my favorite to watch because you get to see the love and passion he had for music and performing before it became tainted to him by the media.

I was looking for this comment! I was there live and I was so confused for a few seconds when that happened lmao But it was just the way the stage diver had his face positioned. He closed his mouth once on the ground and they didn't look so much alike anymore, but I was wtf-ing for a good 10 seconds at the time! Dude was super cool. I talked to him and he said that yeah he knew he could do a good Dave Grohl impression and that's why he got up on the stage. I told him omg you really do and good job because it messed me all the way up. He was happy that someone noticed and we had a good laugh. Pretty sure that's why the camera pans left right after the guy jumps down, probably annoyed the camera guy, because the guy walked right towards the camera (just barely offscreen to the right and only because the camera pans left) and then I had this convo with him and a few other people were watching me talk to him and laughing along too because they obviously saw it too. Around 6:03 you can see Kurt glance over and then walk over to Krist and he asked "What's going on?" and Krist says "IDK" I told the stage diver I think we're disrupting and he said "oops" and walked away!

Out of the close to 50 or so Nirvana concerts on KZbin Ive seen over the years this I would have to say is def. top 5, maybe top 3- that year 1990 with the new addition of Grohl really took the band to the next level. They were explosive, raw and passionate. You can see how much Kurt loved performing, he was totally in the zone 110% intensity level. This setlist is nearly perfect, all these songs they play are amongst my favorite form Nirvana, very nice additions of the lesser played Stain, spank thru, D7, dive. On top of that, the crowd was totally into it and this video quality is superb for the era. Ill be watching this over and over thats for sure.
