There’s more to this story. Kurt had been bashing GNR, specifically Axl, in the press pretty much from the time Nirvana hit it big. Axl was actually a huge fan of theirs. He wanted Nirvana to open up for GNR/Metallica but they of course declined. He’d also asked Nirvana to play his thirtieth birthday party, again they turned it down.

It’s actually very simple and surprisingly had nothing to do with Courtney I believe. Axl stated he was a fan of Nirvana and was wearing a Nirvana hat and all. Kurt was too cool to allow someone like Axl to be a fan of his music and rebuked Axl. So Axl took to the offense as he would.

It never happened exactly. Axl was upset when Kurt died, and Duff and Kurt had made up as well. Duff played with Krist in this weird bass/accordion duet of Sweet Child O Mine, and Dave Grohl did a lot of stuff with the GNR members. So, in a way, they made up over time.

GNR were a strange band. They didn’t fit in with the glam scene, but they didn’t fit into the grunge scene either. They were a transitionary band, bridging the gap between the over the top, slick and saccharine 80s and the bleak, angry 90s. I think Axl was probably smart enough to realise he was being made to look like a silly, preening primadonna… after years of crafting a persona of ‘raw authenticity’, Nirvana came along and made GN’R look like a dated dinosaur band. He wasn’t smart enough to demonstrate a bit of humility, accept the changes, and have a bit of a sense of humour about himself. He lacked the self-deprecating, sardonic wit of the guys in Nirvana, and was made to look even sillier when he resorted to clumsy threats of violence. It probably really messed him up. In his head, he was the man bringing Rock N’ Roll back to the voiceless majority, a working class hero giving the finger to the ‘system’.. when actually, that role was destined for Kurt. I love GNR, but I do wonder how they feel as men approaching (or in) their sixties, all those years past… probably wondering how they could’ve done things differently… weird. Maybe being that chaotic is what made them special.
@dudeman5303

I get that people hate Courtney, but she was totally in the right regarding this feud I think and I also think many people let their fandom of GNR plus their hatred of Courtney cloud their judgement on a scenario like this. Axl was very publicly sexist and homophobic, if he's just out there being a huge POS about marginalized groups he is opening himself to be criticized - no one should tolerate that crap.

2 opposite personalities. Axl was more on the narcissistic spectrum, kurt was more on the co dependant spectrum. Axl dating super models and getting practiclly any woman he wanted every other week, while kurt is stuck with courtney pretending to be happy. Its bizzare, but they were both jealous of each other. Axl always had a love hate relationship with the fans, and constantly walked off stage or didnt turn up for gigs because he felt so much pressure, but still wanted and enjoyed the fame. Where Kurt could take it or leave it. Kurt refused to play in invites for GnR, get some power back he felt he didnt have, but axl had. Yet, axl response was childish, Axl was always known for throwing a tantrum when he didnt get his own way.
