Dave never wants to destroy his drums so kurt always has to do the job for him
@dooley87462 жыл бұрын
Short answer: because they weren't supposed to and he likes his kit a certain way and that makes it hard to replace after every show. He would often move his hard-to-find high hats if he knew the guys were coming for his drums (remember this was before you could just order stuff online) Long answer: why they broke stuff and why they were allowed to break stuff were two different reasons. the band wanted to break stuff to be "punk rock" but in the early days couldn't afford to, so they mostly just brawled with the audience. but they got tired of fighting/worrying about lawsuits and started getting a bigger audience. and the label liked the symbolism of broken guitars and thought of it as sending a message to a certain person who valued things more than people. and so they told the band they could break guitars but nothing else, that the symbolism/message that they wanted to send would be muddled and wouldn't be clear if the drums were always broken as well. and grohl didn't really like when they would break his stuff. So the business people set it up so breaking the guitars was part of the show and thus a business expense write-off for the band (woohoo they could afford to break stuff!), and made a direct deal with a guitar maker that they'd need to buy new guitars after every show. so they weren't supposed to break the drums. it wasn't part of the business model, conflicted with the central Nirvana messaging, and their drummer didn't like it. but every once in awhile they'd decide a drum kit was on its last legs and therefor it had to die an honorable warrior death and the label said ok fine the first time that happened. and then a few times they did it just because they wanted to, but they got told on that the drums were still good and then the cost of the drums would get deducted from the guilty drum murderer culprit's individual pay and they would be reminded to only break guitars (unless the drums have lived a very full life and merit euthanasia to put them out of their misery). So they learned to obey the guitar-only rule... sort of... kind of... when they felt like it
