I replaced the wrong cat first (driver side), busted those tiny excuse for bolts on the heat shield so chunked it. Found out that I replaced wrong cat so I went and bought the passenger and just finished it. I loaded up your video to show the guy at O’Reilly he is an idiot for telling me driver side and stubbled upon the holy passenger heat shield in your video. When I saw you cutting it was when I got stuck trying to take it out. I didn’t have shears, took me two hours to wedge, pry, beat and cuss at to get out. The rest was easy as driver side. Good video man thank you. Sorry for long comment.

The two studs the mount the rear cat to the front cat can easily be removed with a 10mm torx socket, which will make life a lot easier for u.

@eminiscalperpro9729 2 жыл бұрын
@@AGuyandHisProjects mine is an 05 xterra. on one end of the studs, the end the nut screws on to, is what looks like that of a torx bit head, it's 10mm. I recently had an exhaust leak at the flange between the front converter(the one you changed) and the rear converter. I wanted to change the O-ring gasket, but the previous owner had welded in aftermarket converters, so the rear flange, where I would normally unbolt the rear converter, so that I could move it back enough to get passed the studs to drop it down and get to the gasket, was not there, it was all welded together. I put the 10mm socket on my battery impact and popped the studs right out, allowing me to drop the rear converter enough to get the gasket in. if not I was going to have a tuff time dealing with it. Did you leave the exhaust manifold without any heat shield and did you have any issue with that? I'm thinking of leaving my passenger side off and maybe wrapping it with some heat wrap, when I eventually replace the front cats. Thanks for the video!

My 06 Nissan Frontier CC has been nothing but trouble. Had a recall on radiator, dealership wanted no part of that so had a friend change it out. Fuel pump went out, had that changed out, Air Con went out, new compressor. Now the cat. converter is bad at 103,000 miles. Went to 3 different muffler shops and all said same thing, too much trouble and don't want to break a nut or bolt and be held liable for that. Oh forgot gear shift cable had broken and had to tow it home last year.

Good Job, can you put the part numbers or links to the different exhaust gaskets? Also, was the new hardware you bought grade 8 metric or standard? And 1 suggestion; when you torqued your lugnuts, you should always use a criss cross pattern to spread the load I was always taught YMMV! ;-)
@AGuyandHisProjects
@AGuyandHisProjects 5 жыл бұрын
As far as part numbers I will try to start stating them during videos as I think that would be a good idea indeed (let me look through my purchase history and I will get back to you on that later. The hardware I purchased I bought grade 8 and would recommend doing the same as it is a high heat area. The lug nuts I agree 100% and typically do the star pattern with impact (16:32) then i count in a circle with the torque wrench to make sure I dont miss any.

Yes there are two sensors. Four, actually, two in front cats and two in back cats. As you can see there is not real big to get there to sensors, it's like 20% of work, so I'll recommend don't replace thing if it works well. Just unscrew it in 2-3 stage, first when you turn it one time - if it goes easy, go ahead. If it stuck really hard as in this video, don't rush, use thread oil to spill it in between sensor and cat.conv., wait extra 20 minutes and continue.

Keep in mind I am not a mechanic. With that being said yes I went a long time with a bad cat. I don't remember the exact numbers but I believe that your check engine Soon light will come on when the catalytic converter as at less than 95% efficient. Even if you slide it out of the way 90% of the time the bolts snap off from the heat shield so might as well just cut it off.

Would it have been easier to just cut the old bolts off the back of the catalytic converter instead of taking the whole other parts of the exhaust off? Since the new one has NO bolts.

I replaced both converters in 2015 on my 2006 Nissan Pathfinder. The check engine light came on today and its P0420 bank 1. My vehicle recently reached 190,000 and the cats are both nissan oem. Should I start with simple things like spark plugs or oxygen sensor?
@AGuyandHisProjects
@AGuyandHisProjects 5 жыл бұрын
Keep in mind I am NOT a mechanic. That being said there are a few reasons cats can go bad pre-maturely. Do you notice your coolant level dropping consistently? Do you have white or black smoke coming from the tailpipe? Do you notice a high consumption of engine oil between changes?
@hokiedokie
@hokiedokie 4 жыл бұрын
Could be gasket between cat and manifold leaking ..or oil running down from the valve covers on to the o2 sensor saturating the sensor with oil..and also do a livedata voltage reading from the o2 sensors.. youtube explains the live data part..

2006 frontier here 247k miles. 1st time its give me trouble!. I got a cyl#3 misfire code and truck started running rough. I changed spark plugs and intake gaskets and and vacuum hoses. moved #3 coil to driver side. Then truck ran worse. I changed the suspect coil. Run smooth for 30 miles then coil #1 went out. Changed it and runs great now. Still got a catalytic converter efficiency code tho. After seeing this video gonna pay a shop to replace converters! I'm gonna change O2 sensors first to see if that fixes it.

@@jennifersaylors3952 Yeah, the bolt heads holding the heat shields in had broken off on both sides when I tried to remove them to gain access to the cat bolts. The heat shields came loose at least, but I had to tap new threads into the exhaust manifolds after the loose heat shields starting rattling while driving. Personally, I wouldn’t rip out the heat shield with tin snips like this guy did. I imagine Nissan put the shields in there for a reason.

In this case it's not important. So I left mine out and everything is fine. I've been running with out a heat shield for years and everything is OK. Look at performance headers there's no heat shield when you install it.
