Nissan GT-R review: is Godzilla tame enough to drive every day?

For all its flaws you can’t help but admire the GT-R. If outright performance and pure speed is what you’re after then you can’t do much better than this. Nothing gives you as much bang for your buck. However, the repertoire of the everyday supercar has expanded beyond sheer performance and a dose of practicality. The McLaren 570GT, Audi R8 and venerable Porsche 911 Turbo prove sacrifices in terms of comfort and quality needn’t be made, in pursuit of speed and handling.

A think his point was that a 100% full on supercar like a McLaren is actually more comfortable, refined and usable than a GT-R, which is very interesting. I have a 2012 M3 which is obviously slower but on a different level in terms of comfort and usability. I tried a R35 before i bought the M3 but there was simply no way it could have been my daily driver (despite on paper the Nissan being a similar sized 2 + 2 seater coupe, i guess that is why Nissan sell so few.

I personally thought his review was alright, & he's a Geordie OK to anyone from America who struggles with our 'funny' accents. The trouble with the GTR is I don't think most journalists know what to compare it to, its fast enough to worry far pricier machines but it costs as much as a lightly optioned 911. I'd say in reality it's rivals are cars like the BMW M5 M6, Audi RS5 RS6, & they couldn't hold a candle to the GTR in terms of outright performance, though I'm sure the badge snobs will disagree.

Gaaaap. Sorry but you do not compare it to the McLaren 570S and Audi R8 V10. Its direct rivals are the 911 Carrera S, 911 Turbo, BMW M4, Jaguar F-Type R (SVR) and maybe the i8. Those are in the same price bracket. You can get two or three GT-Rs for the price of one specced 570S. :s

I'm a huge GT-R fan. I have been doing tons of research and trying to figure out how soon i can get one. I like your review however you keep referencing the 570s which is an amazing car as well. However I believe the GT-R smashes on the 570s in pricing and performance. You have a daily driver "affordable" car vs a true super car. The GT-R is a car you one day afford if you manage your money properly and one day acquire where as most of the population will only dream of a 570s. I'm not saying take away from the 570s bc it truly is a gorgeous and amazing car but, appreciate how much car your getting for such "little" cost. Don't forget you can also take your GT-R to any local Nissan dealership for your service. Good review though sir.

very good review. Especially the last bit. I had an R35 for the last 3 years and sold it for a 458. The GTR is amazing when you are going all out... but anything less than that and its boring. It doesn't feel special to drive at 'normal' speeds like the exotics or vipers.

In this other review they said " On the decibel killing side of things, the Bose active sound-cancelling knob has been turned to 11, while additions to the insulation behind the dashboard and rear-fenders seem to hold off some more road noise. New acoustic glass helps too, and there’s a special ‘quiet start’ button for those of you who don’t want to announce your “midnight club” shenanigans. How very grown-up." I have to disagree with this. I have 2 points. 1 is the damping, 2 is the handling. 1) As he mentioned, GT-R is a heavy car, it weights about 1,800+ kg with driver. If the damping of the GT-R is as soft as McLaren 675LT or Audi R8, the GT-R will probably float through corners. 2) The ATTESA AWD is probably the quickest AWD on market so don't blame it letting the car slip. You have to know that GT-R is pretty much RWD in track mode. Reason is simple. As he mentioned, "the car is so heavy". "Heavy" is the reason why. More weight means the front tires has to suffer more "load" while turning, front tires will start to lose grip first ends up under-steering. The car needs a bit of over-steer or "rotation" to reduce your turning radius at corner exit. Other AWD like Turbo S, Huracan, R8, etc... Are biased to under-steer which is bad. For AWD cars, both under/over steer will lose longitudinal traction but over-steer allows the driver to adjust the yaw of the car. So that, I think GT-R is the better balance car even weighting 300-400 kg more. By the way, this is just the Premium Edition. Take the nismo and see if it can compete.

Despite the upgrades done, the Gtr should still not be compared to cars in much higher price points. He is saying the R8 and the Mclaren are more refined; uuhhhhh of course they are, those cars cost significantly more. I depends what you're looking for, if you're looking for a balance of power and comfort, you will not find a better car than the GT-R/R35. I don't mind a little noise coming from under the hood. If you want to cruise to work with power and class everyday, there's no better vehicle ever made.

GTR is the Japanese equivalent of the US "best bang for your buck". It's fast and fun but... The cabin is not as good as... but it's cheap. It ride is not as pleasant as... but for the money... It's noisy and has a harsh ride but the power... etc, etc, etc

except it's not a race car. a viper acr is a race car. this one has leather seats, sound deadening material, a/c, for christ's sake nissan tried to make it more comfortable to live with. its a street sports car, deal with it. many owners drive it on the street. it bugs me when people try to say that I shouldn't try and have some comfort in a STREET vehicle. we live in a day and age where performance and comfort are not mutually exclusive.

Some work needs to be done about that accent. About the car, I think its a great all-rounder but not more than the 911. Now that even the base Carrera is turbocharged, its probably just as fast, economical and a better drive as well. It also has a MUCH better interior, and its not that much more expensive than the GT-R. Overall, the 911 is definitely the better car. However, if you're a drag racing fan, better stick to the GT-R.
