Hard to believe, but the incredible R35 Nissan GTR was introduced in 2007 - and brought over to Europe not long after. Still on sale now, it has undergone a few revisions during its life. The biggest was perhaps in 2017, with the car already a decade old.
The interior was given a thorough reworking, with the aim of making the car feel more upmarket. It was also given new engine management to make the car more responsive low down, and power was brought up to 570 PS. The suspension was also softened a little, aiming to make the car a better vehicle on the tough road surfaces often encountered in the UK.
It has been a while since I drove an R35, with the last time being an original spec car - is this one notably better?

One of the most interesting+controversial technical trivia with the R35 GT-R was that its 'Godfather' Mizuno Kazutoshi intentionally wanted the R35 GT-R to be heavy. This obviously goes against accepted wisdom for developing a good sportscar, but he believes that by reducing a road going sportscar's weight without the downforce levels of a racing car, it compromises on high speed stability. Here are some quotes he made in several car magazine interviews: "Other car designers develop a car as a unit. I develop the car's essentials. I decide the tyre size. The most effective contact pressure decides the amount of kilograms we should include; for the best tyre grip. From these situations I calculate and decide car weight. " "Always [motoring] journalists say: "Lighter is better, lighter is better... I don't necessarily think so. The most effective tyre contact is essential, and it's these essentials that decide things like weight." “So, how do you make a car? I can show you a very easy example. Imagine a high-speed corner in an F1 car, and it is using the best tyres in the world. An F1 car weighs 560kg, more than 600kg with the driver. How much downforce does an F1 car generate? Currently, it is around 1,300kg. So what is the total weight? 1,860kg [about the same as a GT-R with the driver on board, coincidentally]. A GT1 racing car weighs between 1,200 and 1,300kg. Plus downforce of 600kg, the actual weight on the car is 1,800kg… you see, very easy!” Having lived in Japan, it is a collectivist culture and the majority of people there avoid to speak their mind, to avoid confrontation. Mizuno san is definitely not the typical Japanese and I guess from his expertise from his racing career, is very vocal. Its interesting to see people like him exist in the car industry.
@ilpatongi
@ilpatongi 3 жыл бұрын
That seems quite a strange claim since every proper sportscar like a Lotus or an Alfa 4C has proven that what Mizuno said wasn't especially true

@ilpatongi
@ilpatongi 3 жыл бұрын
@@smilepermile8165 I was just making a quick comment based on what you've said. I'm in no position to debate with an engineer or professional driver, but many other engineers, from brands who aren't currently on the verge of total bankruptcy and danger of closing down, think the exact opposite of what Mizuno-san said; hence why Ferrari, Lamborghini, Audi (i know right?) Lotus, Alfa Romeo and others try to achieve proper balance and lightness for their sporty cars. Kinda ironic, isn't it? PS: Also, Mizuno said that "less weight means less stability at high speeds", but how is that even possible if the car is designed with proper aerodynamics?
@smilepermile8165
@smilepermile8165 3 жыл бұрын
@@ilpatongi I did say in my original comment "controversial technical trivia" and "This obviously goes against accepted wisdom for developing a good sportscar". I'm sure Mizuno san is also aware that he is very much in the minority with that thought process he came up with. But if he wants the GT-R to have stability at high speeds, that is most likely the reason why he came up with those points.
@ilpatongi
@ilpatongi 3 жыл бұрын
@@smilepermile8165 Yeah of course you were paraphrasing or directly citing, I didn't want to offend and In sorry if I did, it just seemed so funny. So funny that one of the men responsible for the R35 said something so confusing and controversial trying to defend the heft of said car, which also ironically set a great record on the Ring which couldn't be repeated in any way possible. Really makes you think!

I was in the same situation : I hated the car when it went on sale because of the fanboys and the "anti-purist" architecture (4x4, computerized central diff, 1.700kg), then modern car came in and I start looking at the R35 from a different angle. Then 1 year ago, I flew to Japan, rented one for 4 days, absolutely trashed it on the Fuji roads and my opinion totally changed. I want one and I will buy one soon.

One fun experience with GT-R: I had a photoshoot with one in 2019. It was an early 2009 car with 800hp HKS upgrade (plus new gearbox upgrade from Dodson). After we finished, we decided to try making an acceleration footage, with my friend riding shotgun in the car. Launch control on, left foot off the brake pedal, and the GT-R just shoots away into the horizon. The acceleration was so violent, my friend's phone literally flew backwards and hit his face. I think the owner apologised for the small incident, but all of us just laughed it off.

Actually... they are a lot less to run than you say... the aftermarket scene means you can buy stuff at a fraction of the price, of that of main dealers. I ran one for almost 10 years... utterly reliable and a total weapon with some choice mods. At 650hp, 600lbft, they are almost unbeatable, other than some exoctica costing 5 times more. I can do easy sub 8min on the Nurburgring, lap after lap, without anything required but fuel.... They are the BEST easy to love with Supercar, bar none. Even Porsche can’t compare. The running costs of them are WAY higher.

On the subject of weight, my GT-R spends a lot of time on Exmoor. Lots of crests and troughs, bumps and dips and it totally belies any aspect of weight I have ever experienced or read about. It absolutely flies over the rough roads in a way nothing else can manage. I’ve never grounded it over the worst of roads regardless of speed whereas most sports or supercars would have their undersides scraping the road. The latest era of these cars are really incredible and in my experience fabulously reliable. TBO, I have two (one is the 50th Anniversary version 2019, the other 2017). I have never experienced a fault on either in a combined 12,000 miles. I wish I could say the same about latest generation Porsches.

The more I try to decide bwtween an R35, GT4 or Lotus the more torn I become. The R35 was the frontrunner for a long time but niggles over its size won't go away, however, the engineering and Japanese reliability backed by a great eftermarket makes it deeply appealing. Any plans to review a 981 GT4? Keep up your great work, you deserve many more subscribers. It seems the only way to get big Subs on KZbin is to review mobile phones, or do dumb shit!

People always talk about how great the new 992 turbo S is. But they seem to forget how expensive it is, and how a 15 year old GTR is not far behind stock vs stock. Just that the GTR has a MUCH wider array of aftermarket options which is one of the major benefits of buying this car. So at the end of the day, if you dump in all money in both cars, the gtr will end up cheaper and faster. And there is no mistaking a GTR for any other car, many non car enthusiast always mistake a 911 turbo for a carrera S or worse, a cayman ;)

It will be good to see you try the Nismo version I think there was one called the 50 for the 50 years oh my god that is stunning in Black. The price is significantly more than when it launched, but has it increased more than other cars that can be directly compared between then and now - like an M3, M5, RS6, C63, etc. I would guess that the GT-R hasn't increased more than the others. I don't think you can simply compare the price and use an inflation calculator, unless you do that with the others too.

I've hammered one on a track years ago (A brand new 2014 one). Mindbendingly fast, beautifully made, and extremely capable, I just didn't find it engaging. Maybe I'm just used to driving old cars; This just felt too easy, like driving with cheats on. It's not that it isn't entertaining (get it on a straight and it is hilarious), but it's just really not rewarding. There's no fun to be had with matching shifts for example. And that's ok, it's a car built purely for speed and speed alone. I bet it makes an incredible car for eating up continents, and I would consider buying one if I could afford it. I believe you when you say it's a better road car than track car. I love the colour of this one. Really stands out against all the grey of every other car now.

@KeenanStyles
@KeenanStyles 3 жыл бұрын
@@nikomoin7604 exactly key word in your "opinion" which means its not backed by facts. You're also wrong, there were no rules or regulations on power restrictions in the Japanese auto market. If there were then supercars wouldn't have been available to buy in the late 90s and early 00s. It was a simple agreement amongst auto manufacturers to prevent a horsepower war in which wasn't even followed as most of these cars made 350bhp. The BNR34 didn't offer anywhere near supercar performance at a fraction. The BNR34 isn't even remotely a fast car from the factory. I've owned 3 GT-Rs so I know what I'm talking about. The BNR34 couldn't even beat a Evo VII GSR in the rain at Tsukuba. The overwhelming competition and Nissans mentality to only refine the car vs make large improvements as they did with the R35 was the Skyline's downfall. The BNR34 was used as a floor wipe by all of the successor in which its predecessor the BNR32 was once in competition with. The 360 Modena, GT3, GT2, E46 M3, Evo VII RS, STI Spec C, NSX Type S, were all faster dominating the BNR34 to the point Nissan went back to the drawing board with the car to to once again produce a supercar destroyer as they did in the late 80s. The BNR34 didn't get as much hate as the BCNR33 simply because it improved on the areas of concern however the story in motorsports and with the production cars remained the same.

It definitely doesn't drive for you! Did have TC off since that was on a track. Having said that, it still was more impressive than fun. Definitely still a lot of car for the money, but I wouldn't say a lot of fun for the money- especially accounting for running costs. If they were cheaper to run I'd be very tempted though.

The original R35 Was originally created by the original team I think that made they are 34. But to basically shape it as a 350 Z including power plant. Because there is a hot version stating as such look it up

I have a 2012 Nissan Sentra S with over 210,000 miles on it. Never had an issue with the original CVT. I changed the fluid every 60,000 miles as required in the owner’s manual. Nissan is capable to be reliable as Toyota and Honda. You haters should learn how to read a manual and drive a car properly and you won’t have any problems long term.

Based on your extensive experience with Mclaren, would you absolutely advise against buying a 2019 Mclaren 600LT at around the £130k price point. It seems like such good value, but not if the aftersales service, build quality and depreciation are going to be really poor then I guess it is a no go?

Always loved the GTR. Driving it on a track its amazing but the next one needs to be much smaller. It's clearly designed for the American market and is way too big for UK roads.

R35 is a great value car and reliable compared to the more exotic cars and it’s always ready to drive unlike a number of temperamental cars. Drive a standard one or a tuned example check Litchfield Motors for options, size wise not really larger than an Bmw M3 f80
