Nissan LEAF 62kwh Battery Swap

In this video, we swap a "new" 62kwh battery into a 2012 Nissan LEAF.
When this car first arrived at our shop, it had a highly degraded battery with only 6 capacity bars remaining (it would only go about 30-35mi on a charge). We were able to swap in this new 62kwh battery, and give the car a new lease on life with over 220 miles of range. That's triple what it's range would have been when new in 2012, and 6x what it would do when it first arrived here!
We learned a lot throughout the process of doing this swap, and we look forward to doing more swaps like it in the future! While it is possible to swap this battery into a 2011-2012 LEAF, it is a much better idea to do the swap using a 2013 or newer LEAF, as they share more hardware in common which makes things work a lot better.
If you are interested in upgrading the battery in your Nissan LEAF, or have any other EV repair questions, feel free to get in touch with us here at QC Charge.

The problem with the Leaf is that they have no cooling system for the battery, it's just cooled by ambient air. Because of this, they can get very hot and degrade very fast. They are restricted to one DC Fast Charge per day, too.

Did anyone notice how clean the underside of this car was after nearly a decade on the road? These cars don't get filthy or age like gasoline vehicles do. My 2015 is only 6 years old and I live in a state with slushy nasty winters and yet the car is nearly this clean. Amazing ultra dependable little machines. I agree however, with the need to upgrade the 24kWh packs. These were just too small and required recharging far more often than a larger battery would. Recharging everyday, and sometimes two or three times a day, quickly used up the available charge cycles and accelerated the degradation. My wife's newer 2019 has the 62 kWh pack and only needs to be plugged in once a week. With over 200 miles of range and with at least 1000 charge cycles we should easily cover 200,000 miles before seeing significant battery degradation. I'd consider this upgrade service offered by QC Charge if I wasn't living on the opposite coast. Maybe these guys will offer a transportation service soon😃

The Nissan dealership near me has offered to install a 40kWh battery for US$12,400. I may have to wait for the battery to get shipped, but the alternative? Some guy in Dallas offered to sell me a 62 kWh battery for $16K, and then $1K for the adapter rails, $400 for a "Dala" CAN bridge, and another $3K for installation, he doesn't install the new rear springs (for a battery that weight half again as much? Are you nuts? They're $100 from Nissan, and you can do it with a screwdriver!) and that's before I have to rent a tow rig to get it there...and no warranty. That's north of $21K, and we only paid $26K for the car when we bought it new from Nissan. It's a 2011 with 80K miles, SOH about 70% (9 bars). I can still go more than 70 miles when fully charged.

My Honda CRZ has a ~900WH battery. It'd be awesome to add a 96v 28kwh battery pack above the factory battery, and drive each rear wheel with a 20kw motor. It would be cool to just swap the old pack out for a custom larger pack that takes up the old space and raises the load floor of the trunk, but the factory system is not very efficient, requiring the engine to be running for the motor to work, and i think the motor has to run through the CVT instead of being direct drive.

If motor manufacturers are seeking to further reduce their carbon footprint, why do they not offer a full recondition service for older BEVs that includes; uprating the batteries, a mechanical overhaul and addressing paintwork issues by deep polishing and touch-up (where possible) in preference to churning out brand new cars? Unfortunately this is a limitation of putting the large (62kwh) battery into a 2011 or 2012 LEAF. In a 2013 or newer, the instrumentation should work like normal, but the older ones basically were never designed to work with this much capacity. The car is fully functional, but it just won't really show the correct SOC on the dash. A 40kwh battery on the other hand could be swapped in and work with no issues in any LEAF (2011-2017).

@QCCHARGE 2 жыл бұрын
We have not done an iMiEV battery swap, nor are we experts on the car, but I can say that there isn't really an "easy upgrade" option for the iMiEV, as all the cars built have the same size battery (though there was a change in chemistry in 2013). That being said, it should be entirely possible to swap out the battery for a newer one if your old one is degraded, but it would take a bit of research on our part to see what that would require. It's possible that there may need to be a firmware update to match the car and the battery with each other.

With my 2013 Leaf and just 70%SOH 24 kwh battery I still get 100 kms by careful driving and 8.5 kms per kwh. I think range for lots of Leafs will improve if not going over 90 km per hr..and little revving up and down.....and using regen wisely.

This is the way to go. Use an existing car and put a new battery in it. I do suppose it would be even better if you could put a new and more efficient motor in there aswell. But that would be a huge job

Did you have to add any interpreter hardware or reprogram the BMS after the swap? I recall that the shop in the Netherlands add a translator board between the car and the BMS to make it talk to the larger battery pack properly.
@QCCHARGE

Yes, there is a CAN translator used for this swap, as explained at 00:57. You can also see it mounted mounted in place in front of the battery at 03:39.

I have a 2013 24kw leaf that is down to 9 bars remaining. I am getting about 110km out of it. Can a larger battery legally be fitted to it - it still has type 1 connector, but I have a type 2 to type 1 adapter. Still has ChadeMo connector and I have noticed that a lot of new chargers near me are only installing CCS2/Type 2 so probably still got a few years left until CHAdeMo is phased out.
@QCCHARGE
@QCCHARGE Жыл бұрын
Legality might depend on where you are at specifically. I know that some countries are very strict when it comes to vehicle modifications. Here in the U.S., it is perfectly legal to install a larger battery as long as the car still meets its GVWR (gross vehicle weight rating). As far as CHAdeMO goes, while there are not as many NEW stations going in around the world, there are certainly not many stations being removed. There are over 600k LEAFs alone that use CHAdeMO (in addition to hundreds of thousands of other cars), so it's unlikely to "disappear" anytime soon. At last count, there were nearly 50k CHAdeMO stations worldwide with about half of those being in Europe, and nearly 9k in North America.

@QC CHARGE - Great Video, very detailed, just wondering if you found a national supplier of the Nissan Leaf 62-kwh battery, the actual Manufacturer Part Number for the battery possibly. The video you did here was AMAZING. Additionally, do you have any options to getting the battery at a Wholesale cost, any listed discount that are not available to the general public that you can divulge as well....? THANK YOU guys, keep up the great work and videos
@QCCHARGE

Almost all batteries that are currently available on the market to do these swaps are used batteries out of wrecked cars, which makes sourcing them quite difficult, especially since there is such high demand and they tend to sell in a matter of hours... So far, we do not have any real "supply chain" for these batteries (new or used), and neither Nissan nor AESC seem interested in selling them to 3rd parties. In the case of the particular battery used in this video, it was actually a near-new battery (never installed in a car to our knowledge) that was part of a small batch of packs used as part of a research project at a university. This one was definitely an outlier, and it would be unlikely to ever find another one like it again.

@@QCCHARGE awesome reply, I've spent 6 days looking for a Japan connection, now I'll just research the exact parts entirely to making the 62-kwh battery itself and see if I am able to piece one together myself entirely ..... 100% appreciate your honesty in the reply back and I do agree the battery suppliers are not interested in 3rd party purchases. It's too new of a market and until China recreates it 100% we're being held back at the mercy of corporate greed..... thank you again guys

The batteries don't come from Japan (at least not for the LEAFs sold in North America since 2013) . The AESC battery packs used in LEAFs here are actually assembled in Tennessee (not far from where the LEAF itself is manufactured).

Unfortunately they are quite hard to find... If you're lucky, you might be able to find one at a wrecking yard, but often the batteries are already pre-sold before the car even makes it to a wrecker (if at all). The quickest way to get a battery would be to purchase a complete, wrecked LEAF from an insurance auction, though that definitely comes with it's own possible pitfalls and drama...

Thanks for the video, how much is upgrading to the 62kwh battery? Did it work without pairing it with the software?
@QCCHARGE
@QCCHARGE 2 жыл бұрын
The total cost is dependent on the cost of the battery itself. The way we do it here, is the customer buys the battery separately (we are willing to help source it, but ultimately the customer makes the purchase), then our cost for the installation is ~$2,500. The communication module that we use does the pairing with the car (hence why it needs to be programmed while the old battery is still in place).
