Robert, just wanted to mention the person behind the glass solid state battery is Maria Helena Braga. I believe when John Goodenough saw her teams research he invited them to join him at Cockrel school of Engineering. also there are other solid state materials being used. I saw one which used a plastic electrolyte on youtube where he cut pieces off the battery with scissors whilst it was powering a tablet. Also a pat on the back to Johny, great achievement.

I did that too - came out at over £9000 for my house (three bed end terrace). I think the £3k would have been just for the battery. Definitely getting cheaper but a hell of a long payback time. At least one of the options looked nicer than most panels as it was flush with the tiles.

Once again Robert, very informative and a very entertaining episode! As a retired BBC trained Location Sound Recordist - and in answer to Francois G's comment below and beyond - the distorted soundtrack in this episode has been due to the incorrect SOUND RECORDING LEVELS that has somewhat spoiled the episode. ('Audio Peaking' is one such example as this episode demonstrates). Such settings MUST be checked before recording as it is almost impossible to remove this kind of distortion AFTER filming and in post production. Otherwise, great episode. Keep up the good work Robert and the team!

Robert I came across a new book called "Drawdown". It looks at all the methods, on a global scale, to reduce carbon. Excellent book on all the technologies and practices that can be used. I think it will inspire her during those long hours of studying. Keep up the great work.

I got quoted 11K (plus battery) on a 3 storey house and 5.5K without battery. Sadly at these prices they still don't add up. I'm making more from my dividend income on the stock-market and I use that to just buy grid-electricity. When it does finally get to 3K will be the turning point, but even then I will probably end up holding out until solar roof-tiles are affordable.

I'm afraid the sound really let you down on this episode, as i'm sure others have said. However I wanted to point out that aside from that, this format is perfectly acceptable. I would caution you, however, from trying to increase the pace of videos overly much. People will always want another episode, but you can't always do that without cutting quality. High quality is relatively rare on KZbin, and that is currently one of the biggest ways your channel stands out. I know that the KZbin algorithm isn't prioritizing quality the way it used to, but for the purpose of this channel, I think as long as you release at least one episode per week, your loyal supporters will be very happy. Thanks for the work you put in on this, it really shows!!

How TF did he get a system of 16 solar panels (counted from the last Fully Charged episode) and a Tesla Powerwall battery for £8000??? With my usage, by my estimates, it would take me 19 years before I start saving any money, so that's pretty much a no-go. I might have to look into the Ikea system though. Robert, audio is a pain to get right. An affordable solution has just entered the market. The Sound Devices MixPre-3 and MixPre-6 have analog limiters that can usually keep audio from clipping even if the levels are way too high or something super loud happens. Your production tech would probably be absolutely delighted to have one. The MixPre-3 is very compact and just $649US. Get your guy to check out the reviews. Curtis Judd has done some excellent reviews of the MixPre-6 right here on YT. I think it's a sound investment. No pun intended.

distorted audio due to too much gain on the mic or overloading of the signal into the recording devic (computer i guess). You don't need expensive equipment, just something that lets you set the levels manually, (not with some auto-thingy) . Just set it up and talk loudly, set the level so it doesn't overload, and record. :)

I checked the news on theverge dot com ( page in video) and its the battery only for £3k, I got a quote and the solar side is expensive at £5K for 1900W, and the battery is £3.5k if you add the option, Pay back is 21 years and the battery won't last half of that, And 16 year pay back on the solar only system. A 3.6KWH solar system should be around £4.5K - £5.5K

My off grid battery was AUD$11,000 in 2007 and the SMA inverter around $5,500. 10 years later in 2017 the same battery pack is $12,000-$14,000 depending on where and the inverter is still around $5,000. These are real figures. Lithium batteries have come down in the last 10 years although we could still buy them cheaper in 2012 than current prices (AUD was stronger back then).
