Here's a look under the hood and underneath the 2020 Nissan Murano crossover utility vehicle!
The Nissan Murano comes with the tried and true 3.5L VQ35DE engine paired with a CVT transmission. In this video we take a detailed look at the engine, transmission, suspension, cooling system, exhaust, power steering, fuel system and braking system of the Murano, to see what's inside and how it works.
The combination of a transverse FWD engine in a compact package makes for basic maintenance a chore. Many components are difficult to access when servicing, such as the drive belt, alternator, A/C compressor, water pump, radiator, thermostat and starter. While we can applaud Nissan for still offering a reliable V6 in the midsized 2-row SUV segment, an independent rear suspension and good use of aluminum and a fully boxed in steel sub-frame, consideration must be given to basic repair items and an unproven CVT if keeping the vehicle for the longer term.

I've got a 2015 Murano SV... I'm at 289,450 miles as of today.. 03/19/2024... only major issue's I've had was getting the CVT rebuild.. which was a huge bummer but that was back in 2021 and it cost me about 4,500.. aside from that I haven't really had any issues.. I'm running this car to the ground but trying to make it last as long as I can...anyway, great informative video! thank you.

I just picked up a 2018 Murano a few days ago. I love the car, very comfortable (I'm 6'2", 280 lbs) and moves pretty well for its size. I am glad I found this video to give me a better idea on the mechanicals. I already had the dealer change the CVT fluid before delivery and I will probably keep it changed every 30k miles or so. Hopefully that keeps the it happy! Thanks for your videos btw! I just found your channel and I appreciate how well you explain things and providing a unique point of view on vehicles.

The VQ waterpumps are not known for failure, and if they leak internally past 2 o-rings, the coolant is directed outside the engine. The oil filter removal is best done with the wheel cranked hard to the right, lots of room and you can leave the plastic cover in place if you want. I had a '13 Maxima and now have a '19 Infiniti QX60 and they both have VQ engines and that super smooth CVT :o)

Mtechthewise, appreciated reading your post. Sounds like you know more than average on these V6s. I have a question I'm curious if you or Speedkar could direct me in the right direction. I have a new 2024 and the engine revs much too high on startup. Takes a good 3+ seconds to settle into a more common 2000 rpm cold idle. It even revs high through the day while shopping at every startup on a hot engine. I'm concerned about extreme cam lobe wear etc on minus 30 days we get here in the winter. My question is, can this high rev quirk be adjusted down via a good high end scan tool? I'm reluctant to take to dealer for anything. Usually have more issues down the road than not. Thanks for taking the time. Really like this channel. It's one of a kind in all the good ways👍

After watching a number of mechanical review videos, the loud tapping sound from direct injection is the high pressure fuel pump. In the past, I always thought it sounds like the knocking sound of a diesel engine. Anyway, very cool videos. Bring more of these videos. At some point, may be you can create one of those top 10 list of cars that is easy to work on. Like having space under the hood, easy access common maintenance bits and so on. Primarily useful for people shopping for a easy to maintain second hand car.

The gen3 Xtronic CVT in the murano is pretty good. We are about to hit 60k on our 2017. CVT fluid was serviced at 40k. We get ~31 mpg on HW and ~26ish in city. Motor is strong, and has great pickup. So far so good. Made sure the wife doesn't shift forward while the car is rolling backwards so the belt don't get stretched/tore up. So far no issues. We'll see

The styling was ahead of its time when it came out in 2015. I believe it is where the Lexus RX350 got some of its styling cues. Interesting that Nissan hasn't changed the body in the 5 going on 6 years of this 3rd generation of it. Meanwhile the Rogue has been restyled several times during the same time period.

Best, most comfortable car I have ever owned. I have a 2017 Platinum at the moment. I have not heard anything bad about the upgraded transmission. Traded a Rav 4 for my first Murano. Like going from a lumber wagon to a magic carpet. This car has the most comfortable seats of any vehicle under $70K. As for working on them I have no issues, I just take it to my friendly Nissan dealer every 8k. I am also worried they will replace the super smooth V-6 with a 4. Drove a CRV before buying the Murano. The 4 banger sounded like it was working its heart out.

Great video!!!😍 Hello from Charleston, South Carolina 👋I just got a 2019 Nissan Murano SL with 3.5L V6 engine (VQ35DE) this past March, 2024. I love it! I am huge fan of Nissans and after driving a 2009 Nissan Cube Krom for 14 years, this V6 is a dream 😎 Question: I recently had a tech at Advance Auto Parts test the battery, alternator and starter. I am currently at 63,965 miles and figured it was time to check stuff out. After the test, AAP tech told me the battery and alternator were good. But the starter was at low voltage reading. Bright red indicator LOL. He suggested I replace it. I wonder if I use do this? Maybe I could test the starter with a multimeter? Let me know your thoughts when you can. Thanks 👍Rolf.

I have a 2016 murano at 76k. I got tired of auto shops overcharging. So i just did my first oil change, tx fluid, rear diff, transfer case and 4 rotors and brake pads. This is my first cvt fluid change and it will take 2 more drain/refill at least to change most fluid since u only get about 3 qts out at a time using drain plug. I also have a lead foot. So far no issues with cvt. For those comparing the cx5 with rhis car, it is apples and oranges. I test drove the cx5 b4 settling on murano. Any crossover with a straight 4 cyl is a pile of garbage when it comes to acceleration. If u are driv8ng like a grandpa than sure, that is the car for you. But if you want to have ability to do more than the 6 cyl is needed in these vehicles.just my opinion.I do have one complaint about the murano. The first tire and fe9nt pads needed changing at 36k. The only reason I changed the fe9nt brake and rotor now at 76k was because the rear pads were gone. So I would say, very poor quality feom oem. And currwnt tires have at least another 20-30k left.

@9fishwm
@9fishwm 3 жыл бұрын
@@JAMESWUERTELE See Toyota hasn’t been reliable for us at all. Had an 01 Camry and at 92k engine stalled and my mom crashed it. Then she got an 07 Camry and at 32k we were driving down to get my dad a kidney transplant and out of no where the transmission just down shifted to first gear. We were on the freeway going about 70-75 and when it did that it over rev the engine and blew 5 of the 6 piston out of the block. That’s when Toyota gave my mom a murano as a rental and she had to buy one. Then I went out and bought a 2011 Tacoma and that was okay until you started to get on it. The engine made a ticking noise. Then that engine also loved to consume oil like it was nothing too. I got tired of also putting in a quart of oil around 3k of driving. I traded the truck for my 12 Xterra and that now has 167k on still running strong without any problems. Now my whole family has switched from Toyota to Nissan except for my grandpa. He has an 1994 Toyota pickup that only has 130k on it. He’s is thinking about putting it up for sale and getting a bigger truck but he’s probably going to get a GMC Sierra.

I have not looked at any car repair data, however, I think Nissan gets a bad rap. Yes, they did go through a bad phase with their CVT transmissions, and they're certainly not at Toyota's level of quality, but I think the Altimas, Rogue's, and Murano's offer very good value at their price points. I would prefer they divest themselves from Renault, sooner rather than later. I own a 2007 Altima, with CVT transmission. 165,000 miles. Only routine maintenance. Engine runs like it's brand new. Had a Murano for a weekend. I enjoyed it. Only reason I would not buy one is that I prefer the truck-like ride of a body on frame SUV. My 2012 Nissan Pathfinder is the best vehicle I have ever owned. Love the thing and it is a significantly better value proposition than an equivalent year 4Runner or Wrangler.

I test drove numerous CVT and conventional auto transmissions from various brands this past few months. Of the CVTs, the Nissan easily was the smoothest most predictable and assertive and responsive of all the CVTs I drove. This was true in Murano sized, Rogue sized and Qashqai sized. The only one that came just barely close was in a Subaru Ascent. And I do mean barely. Just trying to be as fair as I can. As for longevity who knows but apparently the present-day Jatcos are much longer lasting if you simply change the fluid about twice as often as Nissan says to. This trans works so well I actually look forward to each drive. It's in a V6 though which is tuned especially for torque at low revs but fairly linearly even to very high into the rev range. I suspect these VG engines are very conservatively rated. One thing I know is off and I don't like is the fuel economy metering computer is off by at least 20% showing optimistic fuel economy. You're babying it at 50 mph at 1000 rpm on level ground and the computer will say you've been averaging 7.2 litre/100km (1.9 US gal/62.13 miles) or (1.584 UK or Imperial gal/ 62.13 miles) which is correct if using an American gallon but litres are not measured differently in the USA! It's the strangest incorrect algorithm I've seen on a car. I wonder how many brands do this. The problem is that when you're test driving and comparing vehicles if you have it set in the litres/100 km setting you're getting over 20% fewer miles per gallon (or 20% greater litre use per 100 km) than you're actually getting. If it was an honest 7.2 you'd be getting 39.22 mp Imp gallon, but with calculator in hand at the pumps you find out you only got about 31 to 32 or so (again, Imp measure not USA) So somehow they've mistakenly degraded the computer reading if set to litres/100km to calculate and show over 20% higher mileage than you're actually getting. It's too much of a coincidence the discrepancy is the difference between an American gal (3.78 litre) and a UK gal (4.546 litre).

The biggest thing I've learned with these vehicles (Note: I've been driving for 6 years so I'm relatively new compared to others) is don't drive like a bat out of hell with them and replace the CVT fluid every 40k miles like it says in the book (alongside routine maintenance). I have a 2010 Nissan Murano with 208k miles on it and it's on it's original engine and CVT transmission with no issues whatsoever (knock on wood). We've had all recommended servicing done to it since it was new so mechanically, it's practically new! I don't know about the newer ones however... I like how you do explain how the engine works! I've always been curious about it :)

It would be cool to know what plant the OEM tires are coming from on these newer cars you're reviewing. The first two characters after the DOT stamp tells the plant's location city and country. I would prefer tires from factories in the USA, Canada, or Europe. I figure cheap Chinese tires are on cheaper cars but you never know. A Google search for DOT Tire Manufacturing Codes will bring up the current 2017 list of factories.

Cvts aren't that bad, taking into account this is pretty much a soccer mom suv, it is pretty fitting, if properly tuned/programmed it can be extremely fuel efficient, make it accelerate as hard as possible and be perfectly smooth, the problem is that people find it odd to have the car maintain the same revs, so manufacturers make it act more like a smoother auto, CVTs might be souless, but, performance wise, they are the best transmission (ignoring the fact they cant take much torque, which should get taken care of with more development)
