A little off topic but next time you do one of your Q & A I would like to hear your thoughts on EV's (Electric Vehicles) maybe there is a video opportunity there in the future. The EV is clearly hi tech and loaded with the interactive diagnostics you like to play with how do you see it in the future? and its effect on shops like yours? maybe not in our lifetime but still an interesting topic.

If cars could talk... The other “shop” with the 30 day used car warranty (aka Big Dick’s Used Auto Mart) sent it to his “mechanic” (aka Ugh-ah Doug), down the road who then had his “apprentice” (high school dropout wash boy) repair the horn with a 4’ pry-bar and 2 pound hammer who then somehow managed to screwed up the steering angle sensor. Ugh-ah Doug took his 1” impact and sawsall to the steering wheel and cowl to “diagnose” the SAS but gave up and told Big Dick the horn was fixed and sent it down the road.

@South Main Auto Repair LLC. Hey Eric, as a Nissan Pathfinder owner I can tell you beside the obvious issue that the car has and you are fixing it, it also I can hear that it has the classic fan clutch stuck on HIGH all the time. Maybe the owner didn't know something it is wrong with it, because it bough it used and it may be like since since she bought it, but I can tell right away the fan clutch it is stock on high and has to be replaced to help the MPG and to keep the car sounding like a garbage truck down the road. Those Nissan fan clutch has the tendency of getting stuck on high due to a rust on the front mounted coil spring that sense the temp. I will let your customer know about it. It is an easy fix and will quiet down the truck BIG time plus help to gain the MPG back.
@Garth2011
@Garth2011 4 жыл бұрын
Nice find I D. I noticed the fan noise too and can't stand those non-thermal fan clutches. The best clutch for a mechanical fan is a thermal type as they completely (or 80%) disengage the fan vs. the other version than simply limit the RPM of the fan when its not hot.

I have 2008 Nissan sentra with the air bag light on. I tried using the cruise control on the freeway and notice it didn't work. As I did more digging apparently the clock spring goes bad. The radio and other controls also don't work. Sometimes one button does. In short I need to go to the yard and find one but just haven't got around to it. So that clockspring may be it on this one too. Not sure the sentra has that angle sensor. I didn't see anything about that. The dealer wants and arm and a leg so it'll have to wait until I find one.

First, I never heard of a "" Clock Spring "" till I came here !!!!! I thought - did he mean the steering wheel winds up the dash clock ??????? Come to find out, it has nothing to do with telling time !!!!!! Secondly, there was a rash of brake changing, then a flood of ball joint replacements, with an occasional tire change done....but usually by another worker or Mrs. O. !!! A small spurt of gas tank vent valves, some fuel injectors along with the usual amount of wire rubbings/chaffings !!!! Lots to learn about on a vehicle !!!! But no better place than to be taught here at: SMA center !!!! It's where it is all happening !!!!! I'm holding my breath for part II, so please don't take to long or I'll look like a Smurf !!!!!!!!!!!

before cat went full on computer, a typical the hacks pretty much chopped up the wiring, beats me how anything worked, my job as an HDR/W, schooled with Cat, took a year in electrical mechanical engineering / 101. not being the sharpest butter knife in the drawer, on the GI-bill, it didn't get any better. schooling through cat in advanced hydraulics and a few other things, all to be an HDR/W. much of my time R&R scraped beds cutting edges. ha. with all that said, it's all about OEM, I still recall seeing some of those old timers farmers who got lucky back in the 60-s and early 70's got hook up to dirt jobs, primary tool an adjustable wrench and a big hammer, for sending 1/2 / 3/4 inch bolts through welded threaded nuts, hammer them home, I asked a couple of those old timers about that, temperament, couldn't be bothered didn't care, it only had to last as long as the job, and he would be gone, I spent years chasing after that short of junk. pretty much all that old cat yellow old iron is gone. todays automotive, I know nothing but what Eric has taught on, awesome head for this stuff. at 72years of age, I couldn't even get the plug wire off the spark plugs, added to that, I needed a new battery for the truck, I had to take the truck to the shop I go to to have them put it in, the truck is to high for me and the battery was more than I could manage. my truck be in your shop Eric but for for being on the upper west coast. ! I did full front end refresh on my jeep, got the wheels mostly straight, but the steering wheel was cocked 45 degrees. no biggie, 1 mile drive to the shop on 25mph roads, how hard could it be? every time I had to turn in the direction of the cocked steering wheel, ABS/TC would freak out.

Id say they put a incorrect clockspring in it, or broke something when they hacked the thing apart to get at the clockspring. Based on the mounting devices and connectors being damage and that switch not fitting securely Id say team of cavemen were tasked to that job. Likely a good thing you film some of this stuff so your butt is covered. The saying "Not my monkeys, not my circus!" Comes to mind. There was a lot of monkey business going on with that steering wheel.

I've been down that same road in an xterra. The clock spring is quite steep from Nissan because they come with those stalks but there are cheap ebay ones that do not include the stalks... Of course Nissan had three different types, and the ebay ones are a total of one type. So... that's an easy mystery to solve considering there was a 30 day warranty involved. Frankly, if you did concoct something that moves the steering sensor, it does work, for around one year. Don't ask how I know :facepalm:

It's amazing how often you have to fix something that some other mechanic did wrong. That is why people have a dim view of the industry. The customer pays for a job that doesn't necessarily fix the original problem. So when you fix it right the customer has now paid twice (or more) for a repair. How can they (the mechanics that botched the repair) charge someone for a repair they did not fix properly?

Just like Van Gogh had different color periods, Eric seems to be in his clockspring period ;) I mean, first the Han-doo, then this. Do those things go bad in September, or what? xD

Hey Mr O, I was getting nervous when your were fondling with the steering wheel airbag and that mini prybar in your hand and the airbag accidently deploying and diving the prybar into you head. I feel confident that you know what your doing but accidents do happen. Please be careful remember safety third.

Your lucky you were able to pull codes. The steering angle sensor on my Tundra shorted out and when it did it crashed the entire CAN network. No scan tool communication at all. All CELs turned on in the dash, the truck started and ran, but all gauges were dead except for the fuel gauge. Took me 2 days to figure out.

I had a clock spring fail on my Mazda. I paid a mechanic to fix it right and it was not much money. Without all the service info, you can destroy things quick.

All the nonsense with the clockspring notwithstanding, as a Nissan owner I am pleased to see how modular their design is - Airbag pops out, multifuction stalks click in and out, etc. A lot easier than dealing with 19 different connectors, 11 screws, and needing a special factory tool that only the dealer has.

There is a pin that connects both the Clock Spring and steering angle together...The pin is made of plastic. I bet it broke. Why it doesn't move now... And that steering wheel has to be aligned on the marks. As it will happen again..When someone cranks that steering wheel all the way to the stops...

We build OEM entertainment systems for many of the auto manufacturers. For one we had to add a running motor sound features to drive an external speaker to one of the EV cars. This was the solve the problem that as the car glided along it was ultra silent and pedestrians would step out in front. It's amazing how much we use our ears to keep from getting run over. I tried to talk them into a horse sound but they would have no part of that. So I guess that's relegated to after market. I don't think our motor sound ever made it to actual production. Too bad. It sounded nice.

Giving you free tools with names plastered all over is just smart. If I was watching your vids and saw you missing a tool, sending you one to make your job easier would make me money. That is if I sold that tool.

The sensor detected that the sensor was defective, and activated a sensor to counteract the imaginary vehicle motion, resulting in a false sensor reading. I think. :) Seeing these new cars makes me think I should buy that 1999 Toyota Corolla I saw at a local dealer. Didn't need all that wiring to steer in 1999.
