I have a '12 Pro-4x (rare metallic green) with 94k. I've owned since 76k miles. Only major problems I've had are the common leaky valve cover gaskets. Previous owner had the basic known issues of leaking heater core inlet hose and failed camshaft/crackshaft sensors, as well as a leaking front diff pinion seal. Only other issue I had was the welding on the exhaust manifold downpipe flange came apart, which I attributed to flexing during offroading.

The original XTerra was a hit because it was a very basic, no frills, rugged SUV at a price that undercut the completion. The raised rear roof mimicked the Land Rover Discovery and it just worked. With the way prices on comparable rigs are going, there is definitely room to come in under them price wise. Just stick to the OG Xterra’s formula.

If they do build this with a V6, I would want one. I've been a Toyota guy for 30 years, I currently have a 2nd-gen Tundra and a 5th-gen 4Runner, but I don't see myself buying anymore new Toyota trucks in the turbo/hybrid era. This would make a loyal Toyota fanboy pick a Nissan instead

My dad has a 2000 Xterra he’s owned since new and has been pretty much dedicated to off roading its whole life. Simple mods like lsd’s front and rear, good tires and thick skid plates he can make it over trails designed for serious builds. We are attending the East Coast Xterra Challenge event this July in PA which we have been attending on and off for 20 years. I really hope Nissan does bring the Xterra back and doesn’t ruin it like the Pathfinder that’s just a Mallfinder now

This is Nissan’s chance to basically save the brand. The new Xterra has to have that frontier frame and drivetrain. It also has to start at like 36k-45k topped out. The new frontier needs a telescoping steering wheel and updated camera that’s it!!!! The Nissan frontier is now the best mid size truck to buy by a landslide. You can find brand new PR04X’s for up to 4k off MSRP. If the new Xterra has the fancy roof it will be a volume seller for sure, Nissan is now in the prime spot to take advantage. It’s a shame the Nissan titan is getting discontinued, I think the Pro4x fully spec’d out trim with 10-15k miles used you can find for like 40-45k used is now the best truck to buy in my opinion. Yes ik it’s a bigger truck but the gas mileage is not that much different, tows 10k big ol very reliable V8 and a 9sp trans. As of right now the titan, frontier, armada and the new pathfinders are the most reliable and criminally underrated vehicles in their respective class. I would not buy any other Nissan if not listed above.

Don't forget they need to tune the safety features a little bit. Like the rear emergency brakes need to run off when in tow mode and they need to fix the rear seatbelt sensors so they do not all go off if you have one person (or a backpack) in the back seat.

I'd argue that the Xterra and FJ going away actually help start the offroading craze. People missed them greatly and got concerned that they might all go away, so they started buying 4x4s in bigger numbers. They didn't miss the offroader craze - their ending helped create it. Without them going away, we wouldn't be wanting them so bad now.

I had an ‘03 Xterra that was a great truck. I’d be optimistic about them bringing it back had I not seen the way they rolled out the new Z. It was supposed to be a $40k Japanese sports car, and ended up as a $50k + unobtainable disappointment that gets spanked by the $35k Mustang in every category.

I'm a diehard Toyota guy, but I would buy a removable top Xterra V6 in a heartbeat! I would like to see an economy trim, builders trim, and premium trims. What I think is missing in this segment is a build ready trim that can be purchased for a reasonable price that offers lockers, upfitter switches, and offroad electronics, including 360 cameras. Then buyers can turn to the aftermarket for wheels, tires, suspension, armor, and soforth, without the added cost of buying a premium trim.

CAFE(Corporate Average Fuel Economy) standards are based on the average economy of all the vehicles a manufacturer builds. Sometimes, reducing the number of low economy vehicles by 30k a year might be all they need to get above the CAFE number. If a manufacturer doesn't get below that number, they can receive millions in fines from the EPA.

It's funny to me, reading comments about people needing something bigger than a 1st-gen XTerra because they have 1 carseat/kid. We did just fine with a carseat in a Suzuki SX4. We even did the occasional roadtrip with 3 adults and the carseat. A roof-box and a hitch-rack make it easy, but we often didn't even need either. I use a Crosstrek similarly now. Our 1st-gen Highlander easily fits its full capacity of 7ppl and their luggage too, for trips to/from the airport. For trips with all the toys, either vehicle can also pull a trailer. Maybe many people need to learn how to pack better.

I think Nissan has a real good opportunity here. What they need to do is save money and go old school and be one of the only off-roaders that's old school where you have a manual transmission option. You have a manual transfer case manual hubs. It needs to have at least a rear locker. I'd recommend having a front locker too though, And I know there's probably not a chance of getting a manual cable or linkage engaged locker in an oem car even though I think that would be awesome. And I would totally trade in my car and buy that if there was one like that where everything was manual And then you wouldn't have to worry about airlines getting cut or electronics not working or putting it in drive in reverse 15 times to try and get the locker to engage or disengage you could actually feel it happening and I think people who buy those off-roaders would really like that. especially the way that everything's getting automated like I heard with the Toyota how you can't lock the rear diff unless you're in low range. that's just ridiculous or like if you use the terrain select you can't manually change other things and if they could make stuff more. A la carte like I love Ford bronco with the Sasquatch package because you could get a base model and throw on the Sasquatch package and you have a almost unstoppable off-roader and you don't have to get the crazy upper trims to do it but that would be. My recommendation is to keep everything as manual as possible and that should cut the cost too. And then they could also just stick with the 3.8 engine. It's cheaper. It's less complex, although I'd love to see a straight six. I know that's not going to happen and maybe even at Diesel option. Although you can't beat that instant torque in a gas engine at least from a turbo four banger with a tiny turbo.

I love my 06 Xterra even though it's just a cheap work truck and I beat it as such. It's got a few small things wrong at 170K but it still gets nearly 20MPG even loaded past payload and drives incredibly smooth. I'd consider a new one, but it HAS to be manual and 4x4 or I'll just hang onto what I've got and get an older frontier in 6 speed when the X retires.

Until last week I had a 2004 Xterra. It has been my favorite daily driver I have ever had. But with a kid it was starting to get cramped. I considered a newer roomier Xterra, but finding one in good shape, with low miles, and not ridiculously priced was not easy. I ended up getting an older extremely low mile crew cab Dodge Ram that will eventually also replace my 2007 Nissan Titan farm/work truck that has almost 400,000 major repair free miles. If it ever decides to give up the ghost and the Dodge becomes the work truck, a new model Xterra would definitely be on my short list for a new daily, especially if they stick to the philosophy they had with the original of making a basic rugged vehicle.

@aerynlovell4754
@aerynlovell4754 22 күн бұрын
I think it's funny how they always try to make people think that naturally aspirated engines are inferior antique technology that are not fuel efficient. There are plenty of things you can do to a naturally aspirated engine to improve fuel economy. But you can't improve the fuel economy of a turbocharged engine because it uses fuel as an engine coolant and dumps the unburned fuel into the catalytic converter. Small displacement turbocharged engines in trucks are bigger gas guzzling pigs than a V8. If Nissan offers a free flowing performance intake/exhaust, high flow catalytic converter, and adjusts the engine tune, they could improve fuel economy and horsepower/torque. After I replaced the stock muffler on my truck with a Cherrybomb Vortex, my fuel economy improved by 2 MPG. However, then I replaced the 16-inch rims with 18-inch rims and fuel economy dropped by 2 MPG.
@CodyLeslie
@CodyLeslie 21 күн бұрын
@@aerynlovell4754what? Unburned fuel doesn’t get dumped into the cat unless there is a problem. Also, I don’t doubt that you got better mpg with a free flowing exhaust, it also was very likely worse on emissions which is the other component of why manufacturers are resorting to small displacement turbo engines. It’s not just fuel economy. If not for the emissions and fuel economy standards, Toyota would put the diesel from the Hilux in these.

I'm betting this won't be popular, but this is specifically the time they *shouldn't* be releasing a new Xterra. Segment got too crowded. For years, it was basically only the Wrangler and a really outdated Toyota product. *That* was the time, but Nissan was sleeping. Now, not only are there more flavors of Wranglers, but there's a new Bronco, the LC was repositioned on the market, and that outdated Toyota product has been redesigned and is about to go on sale. I'm not dogmatic about a new Xterra not working, but I see it as an extreme risk for Nissan.

If it comes in at a lower price point than 4 runner and a v6 no hybrid I am interested. I dont care about removable stuff. I currently own a 4th gen 4 runner and will run it to the ground. Had 2 JK wranglers. Only interested in reliability and function at this point in any vehicle product.

Exactly. The segment is so hot right now. It's definitely not saturated yet. There is room for a lower priced alternative because people are tired of these new cool and simple midsize offroaders getting into the 60s. It's absurd.

The Xterra did well for one generation, but sales dropped 75% for the 2nd-gen, so Nissan was right to pull it. They should bring it back, because they need an off-road SUV, not just a bunch of crossovers

My wife loved her 2nd Gen Xterra but it was a bit small for child seats. If this comes out with decent interior room I think it's a contender for her next vehicle.

A returning xterra should dispense with any fancy trim. Stick with a base, mid and pro4x or just 2 trim levels

Besides the Xterra, Nissan should aim for the Toyota Land Cruiser 250 (or Prado Mk5 in markets such as Australia) with an old-school sub-Y63 BoF SUV inspired by older Patrol SUVs such as the one found in George Michael's holiday classic Last Christmas. It may be called Patrol Sport or Patrol Safari in markets where Patrol Y63 is sold, and simply Patrol all across Europe and perhaps in North America. It could also be sold in Japan as the revived Safari.
@johnnymason2460
@johnnymason2460 17 күн бұрын
The Patrol is already here. It's called the Armada. A version similar to the Land Cruiser Prado is unlikely since that would interfere with the Xterra.
@roberthoyt7921
@roberthoyt7921 17 күн бұрын
@@johnnymason2460 The Y62 Patrol/Armada is more of a Middle East/Australia-friendly behemoth rather than a North American one. The Y63 Armada could end up with the same fate as the Toyota Land Cruiser 200 back in 2021. The Patrol-based LC250/Prado rival isn't related to the North American Frontier pickup at all.

Well, we got the pricing of the new Trd Pro Tacoma and if the 4Runner is still more expensive than the Tacoma like it used to be the trd pro will probably be 70,000

If the new 4Runner is priced like the new Tacoma cost alone the Nissan ExT will have the advantage. They both are great for reliability.

Most Nissan dealers still have no idea how to sell a truck. The biggest issue is the dealers want to sell Altimas and Rogues. I say make a separate truck brand like Ram and specific truck dealers. These suburban dealers are just terrible at selling trucks.

@Androm3da 22 күн бұрын
This is actually very true. I never saw or heard any advertisements for the Titan, which is why they never sold any. I rarely saw them at the dealership. I hardly hear anything about the Frontier, either. I had to order my Pro4x. They only had 2 SVs on the lot at any given time.

Creating a separate truck brand is absolutely stupid! Look what it did to Dodge. Now people are saying that Dodge should go away. Absolutely stupid!!!

Starting at 37k? If Nissan made a base S 4x4 at 29k they would sell all day every day, make the SL/pro 4x be 37k fully loaded.

Would that be possible, considering the Nissan Terra or Nissan X-terra is already in the Asian and Middle East? Nissan Terra or Nissan X-terra is an SUV that is based on the Nissan Navara pick up.

The Xterrible was the smaller-ish brother of another once legendary vehicle that Nissan turned into a dog's breakfast: The Pathfinder. Pathfinder was the true competitor to the 4Runner, not the Xterra. Xterra was more after Cherokee sales.

I'll disagree with you on that. The Cherokee wasn't even offered during most of the XTerra's run. I bought an XTerra because I couldn't afford a 4Runner at the time. It served me well for almost 18 years and was still ran great when I sold it. I replaced it with a 5th gen 4Runner because it had most of the features I liked about the XTerra, minus the manual transmission 😢.
