I’ve had a sliding hiatal hernia for a few years now and was always able to manage the symptoms but these past 5 months have been horrible. I’m 63 and I’ve decided to get the surgery. I won’t live the rest of my life like this because nothing can be worse. You’re right, I want my quality of life back so thank you so much for taking my worries away! I see my surgeon in a month and a half and I will follow up 👍

Are you on Facebook? I'm on day 8 after nissen Fundoplication surgery I'm not on Instagram. I had a 270° wrap I've eaten haddock already with mashed potatoes whipped. But I'm still having dysphagia trouble swallowing and getting pills down. I'm starving, because since the fish n potatoes I'm back to jello n pudding now Campbell's chicken noodle soup but I have to strain it take the chicken bits out and I can swallow the soft noodles n broth but It still wants to regurgitate if I want more with it like a jello or apple juice pudding water for meds. I have other underlying health conditions emphysema copd TBM Trachea bronchial malacia, I also have sinus problems, my breathing seems to get difficult after eating no so much so that I need to use all 3 of my inhalers but at least one of them. I want some meat or pasta pizza day 8 and I'm not happy for those reasons no meats and I don't know when or if that Will ever happen for me again to be able to eat the regular diet they say eventually I will get back to. I regret having the surgery Omeprazole worked for my heartburn but not for my lung disease or TBM so the surgery I believe is so they can focus on those other health conditions. It's frustrating

Hi Alyssa. I had my Fundoplication surgery 2 weeks ago. It went very well. I was given injections of Exparel into the incision sites. It’s like a lidocaine. It lasts for 3 days. They did give me Percocet also. I can’t believe the 1st night I was able to sleep on my side. Heartburn - Gone!!!! I did get the shoulder pain which wasn’t to bad. I was able to eat jello, pudding, broth, etc. My doctor told me I could start a soft diet at my one week check up. That went alright considering there’s not much to choose from. My incisions are healing well. It’s the inside that’s still sore. However, yesterday I decided I wanted to try tuna salad and my boyfriend brought me dumplings. Well I almost went to the ER. These went down so well and I was hungry. So I ate and ate and ate and followed it with ice cream. I got really nauseous but I couldn’t vomit. It was awful. I was belching like crazy and the pain in my chest was worse than I can say. My upper back was painful. I couldn’t lay down. My boyfriend wasn’t around cause if he was we would have gone to the ER. It took hours to pass. I finally was able to sleep. Thank God I woke up ok this morning. So scary. It’s 6pm and all I’ve had was jello and applesauce. Afraid to eat. All I can say is even though food is going down and you feel hungry, just eat a small amount every couple of hours. Don’t do what I did. Seriously the pain was the worst I had!!! My daughters boyfriend had the surgery and said it took months before he could eat normally. Oh well at least no acid reflux. Hope you’re doing well. I’ll keep in touch
@alissachristine250
@alissachristine250 5 жыл бұрын
Hi! So glad the acid reflux is gone! Yes, it’s so easy to be excited about food when you hadn’t had real food in a while! I remember I wanted to eat everything but had to refrain. I suggest taking small bites. Chewing really well. And waiting a little bit before moving on to the next bite. It usually takes your brain 20 minuets to realize that the stomach is full. If you still feel hungry after 20 mins have a little more. You will have much smaller portion sizes for a while. I’ve found as time has gone on that it’s better to have a big breakfast / lunch and small dinner (snacks in between). This allows me to get the calories I need in a day without that heavy dinner feeling later. Keep me posted I’m excited to hear how you progress. I found rice to be a very easy carb to consume during recovery. Also by week 3/4 ground meat. I made Zuppa Toscana a lot. Without the dairy(made me feel bloated. Stayed away from a lot of dairy and still do). Best of luck!

I've been dealing with this for years. I stopped Rabaprozole cold turkey about a month ago cuz I thought it wasn't effective anymore cuz I was getting upper back pain like muscle spasms. I've been on numerous medications for it. I've asked my gastro doctor about fundoplication surgery and they said they don't do that. Right now as I'm watching your video my throat feels like I gargled with razor blades, losing my voice and I'm having alot of pain from GERD symptoms. I feel like they're tied together. I'm in a lot of pain & it gets to the point where I don't wanna eat anymore. I've lost weight myself. Like 15-20 pounds and it's still not enough. Honestly we shouldn't have to lose weight to get rid of GERD. That's BS when other people don't experience what we experience. I live in NY but I wanna be heard. I'm miserable 😔. I'm gonna be 25 in June. I'm propped up on my bed, I took Zantec like an hour or so ago and I'm still feeling it. Regurgitating is no joke. I'm really glad they were able to help you and you're feeling better. I need a hail Mary :( 💔
@alissachristine250
@alissachristine250 5 жыл бұрын
Taylor DeMarse you shouldn’t have to live your life in pain. Just because your gastro doctor doesn’t do the surgery doesn’t mean another specials wont. You need to specifically ask to be referred to a gastro surgeon. If you can’t get the recommendation, seek one out that your insurance takes. Medications no longer worked for me and I had enough. It took me six months to get the referral and it was the best choice I ever made. Medication doesn’t work for everyone. And you certainly should be able to get relief.

Hi Alyssa. I had my Nissan Fundoplication surgery 2 months ago. Well I just got home from the hospital because I had to have an esophageal dilation because the dr made the wrap too tight. He also found I had a Schatzki ring (2 of them). It’s a narrowing of the esophagus. My food and liquids was getting stuck in 2 places. By the Schatzki ring then again by the wrap. I had a barium swallow which showed what was going on. I hope this fixes the problem. No heartburn just chest pain, vomiting, constant belching. He had his 2nd chance. If this doesn’t cure me, I’m off to another dr. Just thought I’d fill you in. Hope all is well with you ❤️

Hi Alyssa. It’s day 7 since my surgery. I’m coming along. The soft foods weren’t working too well. I spoke to my Dr and he said to go back to clear. I thought I was doing well but what was happening is I’d eat a pudding which went down fine. I was still hungry and thought that wasn’t bad I’ll have another one. What a mistake. The food started to get stuck and the pain in my esophagus was unbearable. I felt like I had to belch but it really wouldn’t come out. At this point I couldn’t even drink water. I suffered for the rest of the night. I do have to remind myself to eat slowly. I’m still very tired so I’ve been resting a lot. I had to use the laxative tea and colace which worked great. Thanks for that advice. My incisions are starting to heal because I’m getting very itchy. Guess that’s a good thing. I have my f/u on fri. I think I know now that even if tells me to move on to soft foods, I will listen to my body and take my time. Keep you posted

@@phylliscorrigan6447 I was told to move to soft foods starting day 7 as well but it prolly took another week before actually getting to incorporate them. broth, apple sauce, pudding are all good options. I tried cream of wheat since i thought that would be easy and that was a bad idea :( also i tried scrambled eggs thinking that would be fine and it wasn't. Don't loose hope! It gets better! If you get food stuck in your esophagus it won't help to drink water. I actually had to try to cough it up or else it would have been miserable for it to stay stuck. Glad the laxitive tea is helping. Not looking forward to the other side of this surgery in 20 days time. I will be more fortunate as I will be staying in hospital for the first five days or so, depending, after surgery. It maybe because two thirds of my stomach is in my chest. Apparently it is about the same size as my heart. It is classified as a giant paraesphogael hernia. Also I will only be having a 180 degree wrap, unlike the Nissen which is 360 degree wrap. Also I will be having dissolvable mesh that dissolves in about six months. Because ofbthe partial wrap it means I will find it easier to burp and vomit afterwards. I am still in denial. I didn't think I was so bad. I can't believe how young you are fir this problem, I am considerably older.Thanks for your account. I am looking to feeling myself again.

I’ve only done 2 sessions so far and the actual stomach adjustment leaves me short of breath (more than the hernia itself) for several days before getting better and I’m considering surgery. May I ask- looks like it’s been about 2 years now since you had your hh surgery. Would you still recommend it? Have you had any physical limitations from the surgery itself? Did it fully relieve all of your reflux symptoms to this day? I appreciate you taking the time to post and to view my questions. Wishing you all the best!

Cup Studios yes. When acid comes up the esophagus it goes into your nasal cavity. This causes inflammation and the body protects itself by producing mucus. This can cause migraines. Sinus congestion. Ear aches. Etc.

I highly recommend that route because it's much easier to take and you won't be grinding up pills to take in apple sauce. Do your best to not laugh for the first week or two if you can help it. I won't lie, I was in tears laughing but unfortunately you can't help it at times. If you find yourself laughing, try to step away from what is causing you to laugh and take deep breaths, and just think about nonsense. Literally ANYTHING to distract you. I watched a lot of Cops :) It was easy entertainment and didn't really make me laugh. Your body will be fatigued and exhausted, so really give yourself the rest it needs. I was off pain meds by day 5 completely, but by day 4 I was taking half the dosages. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions :) Best of luck!

also!! Don't forget about milk of magnesia! Laxitive tea might not be strong enough the first week so you may need something stronger. By day 5 I was in gas pain but the M of M helped it pass. After 2-3 days, try to also walk a little bit each day, if you are up for it, even if it's back and forth in your home. It helps move the gas out of your body. You'll have a bit of shoulder pain or gas under your rib cage that is uncomfortable. I was sleeping with 3 pillows under my back and a airline pillow for about the first week. You'll find little things in your day that help out. I'd love to hear about your progres!

Thanks Alissa. My surgery is scheduled for 5/2. Before that I have to have esophageal pH tested and esophageal manometry. I’m scared to death after reading how it’s done. At day 5 now. Feeling bloated and slight shortness of breath but its managable. I was on oxycodon wich gave me nightmares and hyperventilation only sleeping for 30 minute increments the first 4 days. Last night i was able to get a solid 4 hrs.... So Im not taking those anymore, just sticking to paracetamol 500mg. Could you give me an indication of when the pain resides? is it 2-3 weeks? also when did the stitches fully heal for you, I'd kinda like to stop sleeping on my back. Have not experienced heartburn or regurgitation really, tho I do sometimes get that preliminairy feeling, like a gas-pressure in the stomach/chest that used to precede regurgitation, wich is slightly painful. And you feel like a burp would get rid of it, but thats no longer an option ofcourse ;p physically cannot get a burp going. Not sure if this is just muscle memory and will go away eventually? Thanks!

Hello! I was off pain medication fully by day 5. Laughing and coughing will still hurt for about another week or two but nothing that would need pain medication to help it. Just general being uncomfortable. I'm about 4 months post op and I can occationally burp. In time it gets easier. Just remember your throat is swelling and it will eventually go down slowly. Don't push it. If you have gas pent up, I recommend going to regular walks where you can (those made me exhausted so i planned a nap after) and also gasx or gas reducers.

I am surprised that so many people with hiatal hernias as so young. I am 66, been diagnosed fir a number if years with it. 14 months ago I was told it was now a hiatal hernia type 3. There was no word of surgery then, it was described as a large one. It has only been in the last two months I have been having sharp intense pain under the opposite breast. This maybe due to my stomach strangulating. I had a barium swallow last week which was a disaster and get the results on Tuesday. Unless I am told I am having strangulation of the stomach and surgery is a must, I really don't want the surgery, I don't feel it is bad enough at this stage. When I was diagnosed with the type 3, I put myself on a gastroparisis diet. That is grazing on food. Small amounts frequently.and I was coping well. It was my GP that wanted me to return to my specialist, not me, after telling her that the pain had shifted.

Hi! You might feel some odd sensations as you heal. Everyone is different but I wouldn't force food. I know it's tempting but you'll really regret it all because you're hungry for more mashed up food. I couldn't do mashed food for about 2 weeks personally. I stuck to tomatoe or liquid soups, protein shakes, jello, pudding, broth, apple sauce. those will all be very helpful. I stayed away from sugar as much as possible and dairy. This helps prevent sugar dumping syndrome and helps avoid extra pent up gas.

Melissa Horn hi Melissa! Speak to your doctor ☺️ I think if you need fatty foods that you can find ways to make it work. Take avacado and blend it down so it’s extreme smooth with nut milk. Salmon or your omega 3s might need to wait a few weeks but I think salmon is soft enough to eat before beef or steak. You could prolly get protein shakes to supplement as needed. The pain meds I was on doesn’t have to be the one you will be on. Speak with your doc. Explain your concerns. I’m sure there can be a solution!

I'm happy to hear that :) I'm suffering from 3 months of acid reflux and I have a hernia in the diaphragm less than 3 cm and the medication usually does not treat the problem but it alleviates the symptoms. I am very sad :(, so I can not sleep well. I sit down so that the acid does not rise in me and I do not eat my food as I like to avoid all the foods that cause heartburn such as tea, coffee, tomatoes, gaseous drinks and fried food. I am thinking of doing this process to solve all these problems, but Dr. dissatisfied with that, he says the size of the hernia is small and continue to medicine For the length of your life the process is often said to be unsuccessful and will return you But I am currently very sad for my condition and in the case of depression and I really hope to return as I am in the past I can sleep as I like and eat food as I love.

Every gastro doctor wants to treat you with medication because it's more money for them. Means more medication changes, more medical bills, more upper endoscopies just to be told the same thing. I was on PPI's for 4 years. When my doctor told me after my second upper endoscopy he would "consider" surgery, he didn't. He kept changing my meds over the course of 6 months and I was tired of it so I said that I want a surgical recommendation and that was my final request. So he gave me the recommendation of a surgeon and I took my concerns to them. I sat down, told them my history, and they recommended a nissen. BEFORE SURGERY- Try and contain the issue if you can with food, diet, exercise. I saw a dietian, lost over 40 lbs, and made an active effort to get rid of GERD before surgery. Surgery is a last stop option. Even if mine unwraps in 10 years, I'm 100% getting this surgery again. It's provided so much relief for me that I don't want to go back to suffering with medication again. My surgon told me that it didn't matter if I was treated with medication or was on a diet or anything, I needed surgery to correct the issue. It comes down to what kinda of quality life do you want to have. Do you want to continually be afraid of eatting because you know it may or maynot make you feel aweful or do you want that freedom. Most doctors I don't think will recommend after 4 months. Consider having your medication upped. If it doesn't work, speak up. Do not be afraid to stand up for yourself! Hope you find the relief you need soon.

I suggest learning about pain medication, and how they affect people before you let them give them all to you . I have a cough and congestion that is bothering me too. I make sure to walk to get the gas out. I burp it up. Even with being held upside down and having the cough the surgery is still bearable and worth it.
