These conversations are amazing....let me set it straight. I spent OVER 45 years in the nitrogen and oxygen business. I was on a team that included engineers from Caterpillar that helped develop the tire filling application for large crawler tires at the Caterpillar Tractor Tire Facility in Peoria IL in 1976. Trust me when I say....in auto tires there is NO BENEFIT....none. Fill with air, or fill with N2. Either is fine. If you are running large crawler tires, or truck tires made in some foreign countries without a butyl liner....N2 may have some small inflation preservation benefit. Just to also be clear, as I had a hand in this application as well. Airplanes use N2 in tires for one reason.....reducing the O2 levels for explosions. An AeroMexico plane many years ago had a tire explode in a gear well and it caused a catastrophic crash. So the FAA now mandates that all commercial aircraft have less than 5% O2 in the tires. It has nothing to do with wear.

They would also put those pretty nitrogen green valve stem caps on for a cost. You do realize that air you put in you tires and the air you breathe is 78% nitrogen and 21% oxygen plus other gasses.

It doesn't matter which gas you fill your tires with. Tire pressure increases with the temperature increase form driving in all cases, more with straight air but not a significant difference. Pressure loss over time occurs with all gasses, slightly less with nitrogen, but you still need to check tire pressure at least monthly in all cases. Check tire pressure at the beginning of the day before you have driven, that's what's referred to as a cold tire pressure, that's the number on the sticker on the door post at the driver's door. Never bleed down a hot tire. They are designed to have pressure increase with driving and the recommended cold pressure takes this into account. Basic tire maintenance is what will increase your tire life, not nitrogen.

Fellas....fellas. I helped invent this process (with a guy named Ralph Grampp at Caterpillar) back before most of you were born. Back in the early '70's I worked with the Caterpillar Tractor Co in Peoria IL (not E. Peoria....but at their tire facility in Peoria), to see if we could help tire life and wear by using N2 in large crawler tires. We showed an improvement making the investment worthwhile. For passenger cars however there is NO benefit to cars here in the US....NONE. It's all sizzle and no steak. Take it from someone who helped start this craze......it's goofiness for car tires. F1 cars use it because they are subject to significant heating and therefore blowouts. This is the same reason aircraft use it, so they don't risk explosion in a gear bay during flight (like an AeroMexico flight did). Standard auto tires do not see this situation. I have spent my entire life in the nitrogen business. It's something I kinda know.

@@BeaverLakeMotorsports I live in Florida. I have many days outside temps are 50 to 60 degrees at 6am...95 deg. by 2pm . Always had an air compressor in garage. to bring tires up to 32 or 34 lbs every 4 or 5 days.. At 25 lbs or less, just the bump out the bottom of the driveway would push out another bit of air. I know because i checked it. I had to justify the compressor expense. Underinflated tires run hotter, hot water rots the inner tire. Underinflated tires pick up punctures easier. Generally I like to run at 35psi. To the point now...I bought a car that came with nitrogen filled tires...wow I could not believe the difference. Went a year at a minimum of 35 psi never touching except to rotate. I also got 60k miles out of 40k tires. Never had air again , only run nitrogen.

I'll make it simple from my experience with my large truck tires using nitrogen (5x12.5R20 w/40 PSI). I live in central-eastern Georgia and the temperature can fluctuate from 115 degrees to 20 degrees. I've never seen the PSI fluctuate more than 1 to 2 PSI at the most during all times of the year with nitrogen if it's very hot or cold. Typically ir fluctuates around 1.5 PSI on average. Nitrogen is also great for tire wear especially for larger truck tires because it saves the tire from constantly expanding, which is bad for the rubber. I currently have compressed air in the tires now and they fluctuate 3 to 6 PSI during the summer and more during the winter. To me it depends on if the tires are new definitely use nitrogen but if they have allot of wear already wouldn't waster the money to replace with nitrogen. Hope this helps.

It's volatile. You're using an unsafe gas in a tire just because you're to lazy to check and fill your tires. You're supposed to check the tires on every fill up anyway. How about stopping the misconceptions and look to some facts. The use of nitrogen in tires started in aviation and has a solid foundation in science. Atmospheric gas is about 78% Nitrogen gas (N2) and 19% Oxygen gas (O2). O2 is a VERY volatile and aggressive gas, where as N2 is almost entirely inert. Remember, Oxygen eats iron and it also reacts with almost every other organic substance, like rubber. Long term leakage is also a factor as N2 molecules are also slightly larger and less susceptible to permeation leakage than O2. For a typical rubber material, the permeability coefficient P, for O2 is about 10 and for N2 is about 3. Here's the actual science on the difference between the 2 gases. -- www.getnitrogen.org/pdf/graham.pdf Yes, you eliminate some moisture from the equation when you live in humid environments, but that is not the reason for using N2 for rubber tire inflation. As opposed the uniformed guesses and scam crap in the comments, there probably is not much difference between the use of N2 vs. Compressed air is normal driving for us lowly citizens, but let's at least share facts not just opinions...

Nitrogen molecules are smaller than oxygen Yes but oxygen molecules can't exists on there own ? The smallest they can exist is in pairs and that is bigger than nitrogen So true but not true?

You're confusing molecules with atoms. An oxygen molecule is composed of 2 atoms but so is nitrogen...

What idiocy. Nitrogen in tires is such a scam. And this guy is no physicist. Oxygen molecules are larger than nitrogen molecules...check the periodic table. Heat causes all gases to expand, the difference between nitrogen and air (which is 78 percent nitrogen and 21 percent oxygen) is minimal, particularly when considered on the scale of the tire. moisture , that is water vapor, can be introduced into either the compressor pumping air, or nitrogen. The amount in air is dependent on the ambient humidity. If you really want to calculate the amount of change in tire pressure in a tire filled with air you can simply by using the partial pressure of the individual gasses present. The difference again between that and nitrogen will be miniscule. In short, you may, MAY, be able to shave one one hundredth of a second off your laptime using nitrogen assuming all the variable fall in your favor. Save your money, get a decent air compressor, add a drying agent if you like and forget about the nitrogen scam.

Hi James, the periodic table is a list of elements, not molecules... And you don't need to be a physicist to have a basic grasp on what's at work here: O2 and N2 are diatomic molecules. As indicated by quantum mechanical theory of molecules, the electrons of a molecule form a diffuse "cloud" surrounding the nuclei of the atoms in the molecule. The electron cloud around the oxygen nuclei in the O2 molecule is smaller, more compact in size, due to attractive electrostatic interactions between the electrons in the cloud and the greater positive charge of the nuclei of the O atoms in the O2 molecule. Each oxygen atom has 8 protons in its nucleus, while each nitrogen atom has only 7 protons in its nucleus. Thus, the overall size of the electron cloud of the O2 molecule is smaller than for N2, in part because its electron cloud is drawn in closer to the O nuclei by the greater positive charge on the O nuclei.

I live in Canada. All the free air compressor in gas station suck. Yes, nitrogen filling do make a difference. I had a repaired allow wheel from a fender bender & it was the only one filled with compressed air while the rest is nitrogen. Right at the end of autumn, the tire from the repaired alloy tire lost a lot of pressure. The year after all tires were filled with nitrogen & fixed the issue. It's not about the molecule, but more of a moisture problem. If you live in Texas you wouldn't see a difference, if you fill on a dry day. If you live in a damp place with a lot of temperature fluctuation between seasons, you would notice the difference right away.

Put water in the tire because water has bigger molecules than nitrogen, is it possible for someone to pay for ordinary air, hahaha, what a disaster lie. I have been a driver for 30 years, the air has never let me down.

Nitrogen use in tires is Bull Shit, try to check things out before you fall for marketing crap... just because someone says that something is 'better' consider the actual amount of 'better' that actually applies to your application...

Street car, totally agree (unless you're storing tires for a while or worried about oxidization of your wheels and tires). Race car applications... Yeah at some levels you'll want to take another look at running Nitrogen. If you're a weekend racer or a track day guy, probably unnecessary, but as you climb the ladder it's one of the things you'll run into in a lot of different disciplines of racing. The big benefits come at high temps so if you're not really heating your tires up then it's probably not for you.

look at this scientifically, people that use nitrogen for their car tires and paying extra are stupid. look at the nitrogen content in oxygen, it's over 80%. if you dont pull a vacuum on your tires to remove any moisture or oxygen in the tire during assembly and you just fill it with nitrogen then you'll average a nitrogen content of 85% but using straight compressed air is 80% nitrogen, by the way nitrogen filling machines only can produce slightly over 90% nitrogen. so the differences are negligible. you can research this info and comeback back and thank me later.
