That one random weird time Bomberman was a platformer. There's a lot of neat oddities to find in this strange experiment of a game.

I remember there was this Kiosk for N64 games at Target. It had no controller, just some board with flat button stickers for each game to play the trailer. I pressed the one for Bomberman Hero and it was some narrator freaking out yelling "It's Bomberman Hero and he can Jump Now!" That spoke to me since I was wondering why I could not jump in Bomberman 64

He couldn't jump because he can't do anything that isn't related to blowing shit up or murdering everything that isn't him. Hell in Bomberman 64 you can blow up what I assume are hotels full of people. Seriously look up the second video on the thestrawhatno's LP of it, it's shockingly morbid.

19:35 As weird as that method to unlocking a secret seems to us, I actually think it's kinda neat. When you think about how kids play games, mashing start to get to the game quicker, definitely seems like something they would do. For some reason I just found that part really charming. It's amazing how differently kids and adults can end up playing a game.

19:35 Another Start-button secret? I remember that Bomberman 64 used that same trick to encourage Japanese players to buy the Joycard 64 Turbo controller (conveniently also made by Bomberman's developers). You could unlock extra multiplayer stages by rapidly pressing start at the main menu. That way, you wouldn't have to kill your fingers mashing, and Hudson makes another sale! Looks like they wanted to further reward buyers in this game too.

I would praise this game quite a bit more than you did, Nitro. The sound effects are top-notch and unique, and the environments have great variety. The levels are pretty short but there are a LOT of them (way more than other 3D platformers that have levels). This makes the game very different from the open-area collectathons that dominated the world of 3D platformers the moment 3D became viable. In that sense, this game has a lot in common with 2D platformers -- it's less about exploration and more about linear platforming skill. And yet it uses the 3rd dimension just enough to provide some exploration and hidden thing, and the third axis works great for interesting visuals and for meaningful enemy placement. In this way, it's much like Super Mario 3D World, but a few generations earlier. Because of the fixed camera and the weird bunch of stages, the game just feels eerie to me. You often end up inside weird techno buildings or jumping around strange indoor duct-systems suspended over an abyss. It makes you wonder who built these, and who uses them? I mean really, it's completely unique. I don't know a game that built such a mysterious vibe just because of its platform-driven level design. And these strange aesthetics in every level integrate cleverly into the gameplay so often. This stage is all about its elevator system, this stage is all about moving into the z-axis, this stage is about teleporters, etc. And don't forget the mirror stage -- that one is brilliant. As for 100%ing the game -- I think it was done terrifically. The levels really are short, so if you just want to beat the game, it's a pretty simple and fun experience that a kid could probably pull off. But if you want to up the difficulty, you try to collect everything in every level. And this would be annoying in so many other games, but again, the levels here are short and linear. So there's really not much to it; it's not super difficult, nor is it a tedious game of hide-and-seek. For an experienced gamer, it's a perfectly suitable challenge, and it frankly redeems the game. Without this design, it wouldn't hold my attention long enough. I would just beat and shove it under the rug. But man, no matter what you think of the gameplay, the sound effect for picking up crystals -- mmm! Man, it's just so glassy and crunchy. It's delicious. This game's sound design is just like no other. So I've got to give this game the ultimate praise: It's not the greatest game ever. It's not the masterpiece that aspiring designers should bow down to. But it's exactly what a video game should be: It's excellent fun, it's imaginative, it has an appropriate challenge for everyone, and it uses the audio-visual and player-controlled nature of the medium to the fullest. And it does it all on its own terms. Again, it might not be on the Mt. Rushmore of gaming, but it's good AND unique; if you want to play a game like Bomberman Hero, you pretty much have only one option -- play Bomberman Hero.

ah wow, you reviewed one of my childhood games, Bomberman Hero is actually my first game ever before I play a few others, the Bomberman games I still have to this day is Hero, Bomberman The Second Attack 64 which has the best Multiplayer in my opinion, Pocket Bomberman GB which is technically another platform game so Hero isn't the only one out of all, Bomberman Max GBC, and Bomberman Max 2 GBA (both of them "bomberman Blue version", yeah sorta like Pokemon in a way but ok games) it nice to a KZbinrs like you who reviews games I actually have. NICE! on the topic on Bomberman Hero, the Secret I only knew was the secret final boss in the end, I never knew about the other secret this game have specially the where you have rapidly press start so many time for that secret to show, and yeah I don't blame you for using a "Game Shark" that just asking for so much out of a player and I think I remember that when you collect a certain amount of diamonds your health increase, I don't know if that happen to you in your playthrough

I recall playing a bomberman game on the GBA that was some sort of weird blend of legend of zelda, pokemon and other top-down adventure games. I have very fond memories of it to this day, I believe it was called 'Bomberman Tournament' a good example of doing something interesting with a franchise by changing it's style completely. This was still 2D top-down though, which honestly really still cemented it as an actual bomberman-game. Had some really catchy music too, and plenty to explore.

What I think is REALLY weird is that Bomberman Jetters is based on a Bomberman anime of the same name that NEVER got dubbed (Makes me wonder if they localized the game to try and gauge interest in bringing the anime outside of Japan but scrapped it for reasons)

Bomberman Hero was supposed to be a Bonk game and they changed it for marketing reasons. This explains why the game is so different and random in relationship to the other games. And explain all the weird "robot attachments" too. It's a quirky and clunky game but I still love it. Great video as always.

Interestingly for me as a kid Bomberman was a platformer series since the only ones I played were this one and Pocket Bomberman on the Game Boy. Thanks for reminding me of its existence.

To think I actually went out of my way as a kid to collect everything, and get a perfect score on all the levels to unlock the 6th world. I actually do remember spending weeks on one level, trying to figure out what was it that I was missing. That level was the one in the sewer like area. Behind some wall, there were hidden crystals.... Once I figured that out, I was slightly pissed off. Another thing, I actually don't remember Bomberman Hero having that bad of a frame rate. In fact, that was the very first thing I noticed about your video. I guess back then I didn't care about frame rate or anything. As long as I could play the game, it was enough for me. Your video did open my eyes to a few things though. Such as the bonus when you press start multiple times as the game boots. I didn't know about that one, and you are certainly right about it sounding like a myth a kid would tell you during recess.

The Bomberman game I grew up with was Bomberman Generation for the Gamecube. It's one of the adventure style games that no one talks about due to 64 hogging all the attention there. I have fond memories of that one. I'd actually love to see you talk about it, Nitro. It's what I'd consider the best kind of kid's game: I only give it that classification because the difficulty's pretty non-existent for a seasoned gamer, but otherwise it doesn't talk down to or demean the player in any way.

I was watching the Nitro Rad episodes on the Ty Trilogy when this new episode popped up! Didn't even know that this was uploaded today! What I (along with most other people) also didn't know that Bomberman Hero was intended to be a Bonk game. That's how we got this weird experimental Bomberman game! Oh, and also, the princess in this game kinda looks like Princess Daisy during her N64 days... the fact that Hudson also developed Mario Party 3 helps this fact.
