@@badasstoad9419 Games like YN do not need sequels, I think. They can destroy the whole idea, spoil the unique experience the game gives. Just like this new 3d game... Even though it does look nice, there's something extremely important missing, which made the original so damn good.

jigsaw chan I don’t know. Yume 2kki stayed very faithful to the original game though, I think it only improved Yume Nikki instead of spoiling the idea. And fans have always been wanting more from Kikiyama and for Yume Nikki to become more popular again. And only a sequel or a good remake could truly make that happen.

I really had hoped they'd go for a full 3D rendition of the original game which you can fully explore, rather than the side scroller stuff. Like others already mentioned: as a stand-alone game it's fine. But as an official Yume Nikki game, it's rather disappointing.

Yuunarii I personally would have liked it if they went for a more colorful, Super Mario 64 kind of game instead of a more realistic, side scrolling game. Because looking at the general art style of the original Yume Nikki game, I think it's pretty obvious that they were going for a more cartoony, anime style. And considering that Yume Nikki is mostly about exploration, I think it could easily be turned into an amazing 3D Platformer with the right people behind it.

YN-DD- is a game *about* Yume Nikki, rather than a proper Yume Nikki game. It doesn't encapsulate the freeform exploration and atmosphere of the original, instead crafting a linear experience that takes you through several setpieces that invoke the spirit of the original. I honestly didn't mind the new mechanics, and some parts really drew me in ala the original (Pink Sea, the Sky Garden) but it doesn't come close to the immersiveness of the original. I still had enough fun to 100% it though, the diary is really nice.

Poor Uboa, reduced to a simple jump scare. That's what I was most looking forward to in this, considering he's the reason I ended up checking out the original game 8-10 years ago, and I suppose it's cool he made it into the new game, but it shouldn't have been like this, he deserved so much better treatment than a jump scare :( No clue when I'll be able to actually get this, so I'm glad I watched this first. Kadokawa isn't a "throwaway studio". It's literally the company which owns RPG Maker; or, to be more specific, the one which owns the company that developed RPG Maker 2003 (Although Kadokawa itself is listed as the developer for all the RPG Maker versions available on Steam). Honestly I think there was no choice of developer for a new Yume Nikki game more appropriate than Kadokawa. It all went full circle, if you think about it.
@funkwolf1
@funkwolf1 6 жыл бұрын
At one point they might not have been a throwaway studio, but RPG maker 2003 was fifteen years ago. That's long enough for the team to exchange members or change entirely. Atari is proof of how easy it is for a name to be worn like the skin mask from texas chainsaw massacre.
@QuotePilgrim
@QuotePilgrim 6 жыл бұрын
RPG Maker MV, also made/published by Kadokawa, was released less than two years ago. As I said, Kadokawa is listed as the developer for all RPG Maker versions available on Steam - although the actual developers are subsidiaries of Kadokawa (at least for the older versions, I couldn't find info on who actually developed the newer ones). Also, Yoji Ojima, who developed RPG Maker 2000 and 2003, is listed as one of the developers for MV, which might be a sign that the team of developers hasn't changed all that much. Anyway, none of this matters, my point is, Kadokawa onws RPG Maker, and I think having the company that owns the tool used to create the original game make the new one was a nice way to bookend Yume Nikki, and that may well have been the reason why Playism has chosen them, which goes against Nitro Rad's argument that they don't care about the game.
@voidofspaceandtime4684
@voidofspaceandtime4684 6 жыл бұрын
Nah, this is the same as what happened to Atari. This argument is also like saying that Polaroid today still is the same brand as yesteryear and not owned by a company that uses it just for it's brand as an excuse to pump out cheap plastic garbage. That's what Kodokawa is now. Owning the license/brand =/= being the same company, not by a long shot. "worn like the skin mask from texas chainsaw massacre." is right.
@QuotePilgrim
@QuotePilgrim 6 жыл бұрын
Void of Space and Time The company may not be the same as it was before, but here's the thing, the latest RPG Maker, from just 2~3 years ago, was developed by the same guy who developed the RPG Maker that was used to make the original Yume Nikki, so it's safe to say at least some of the people who worked at the company back then are working at it today.
@Neogeddon
@Neogeddon 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I dunno. The big reason why the original works so well for me personally is the art direction and the use of spritework. It's hard to get a grasp on just WHAT exactly you're looking at sometimes, which is a lot like dreams themselves. Seeing this footage, none of the areas feel particularly dream-like except maybe the Pink Sea. I think that you COULD achieve the same level of surrealism in 3D, but not on this kind of budget, and with a much more talented team of developers.
@MelodyRose96
@MelodyRose96 5 жыл бұрын
You definitely can achieve surrealism in 3d, just look at LSD Dream Emulator. That probably had around the same or less budget than this, and yet the game, despite it's flaws, is a cult classic. I definitely think it's more of a problem about the developers than the budget. How many times have we seen 1 man indie projects with 0 to little budget turn out well, even the ones shown on this channel alone? I think the developers of this game were just lazy and didn't put any sort of passion or care into this game that they should have. Yeah, they're making patches that fix the problems, but they shouldn't have had to do that if they made the game actually good in the first place.

I get the feeling that they went like, "let's make the same game but MODERN and with REALISTIC GRAPHICS" without even thinking what made the original such a weird and enjoyable experience in the first place (exploration, interesting surroundings as good examples). I think it was a HUGE mistake to erase that surreal dream vibe by the sake of making things more 'realistic'.That was what made the og so distinct and an overall great experience after all! And Dream Diary ends up looking more like a generic Unity game. How would the original concept (a surrealist trip into some probably disturbed and complex girl's dreams) could possibly adapt to modern graphics? I don't even think the devs ever thought about that beforehand. And it shows.

Just a bit of clarification on the Kadokawa part. They didn't just start making films and game recently, they were one of the first to a thing called "media mix" in Japanese, basically making an IP that can crossover between several forms of media like novels, films, mangas, animes, games etc etc. This probably started around 20 years ago. They are also the creators of RPG Maker itself (Enterbrain is one of Kadokawa's brand name), and the company who used to make them (ASCII CORPORATION) are currently part of Kadokawa.

I honestly don't think this reboot deserves the hate it gets. With Yume Nikki being such a surreal game, I feel it makes sense that it could be adopted into different styles or types of game. The art and models are actually incredible, though I agree its disappointing that the camera is so pulled back. The soundtrack however is phenomenal, with the almost lofi vibe making sense as people do sleep to those kinds of music, and it makes sense for there to be an airy kind of music. There are still pretty cool events or areas that some might not know about, and theres still some theories you can make with what's given. Is it the best kind of reboot? I suppose not, it's clearly not the best, but I think it's still really good and undeserving of the level of pounding it gets

While I do think the game is a bit too pricey for what it's offering, upon reflection, I would only consider the game disappointing in regards to it not matching the non-existent game that the hype machine conjured up. I would probably call the game on its own terms more like a supplement to the original in a way similar to how a movie adaptation represents a much more in-depth book. I don't think the aim was to ever completely replace the original. In fact, it feels almost like a fangame that happened to get the backing of a major publisher.

With what Kadokawa does and the clear plans to milk RPGMaker games... I would have done Mad Father instead. It would have given a more direct premise and an actual adventure game to work with and gain experience than the more surreal games. I would have the crap out of that.

8Kazuja8 there is this game, The Path. It has a lot of the style of Yume Nikki, in a sense. Full 3D. Some blame it of being a walking simulator. I do think a remake in that style would have been fascinating to see, even when most people would have hated it. I do agree tho. Most of the more adventure type games would have fir better. I said Mad Father because it does have a VN type of vibe. And it is what Kadokawa does mostly. So trying to do a game with aspects of what they are used to would have made for a less... failed experiment feel.

Uboa actually does make an appearance, but it's a decent bit hidden. if you want to figure it out yourself, then stop reading. ok, so here's how you do it. You need to return to poniko's house after you get the lantern. when the heavy breathing part comes, you activate the lantern and walk over to poniko's drawing desk and press X (on the nintendo switch anyways).

Kadokawa currently owns the RPGMaker engine. Which means that they'll get advertised any time somebody makes an RPG maker game. So while they haven't published too much in the way of games they do own around 10 entire game creation engines.

you know, there's something I've been wondering about for awhile now. They said that they worked closely with Kikiyama and such, but I have to know: How did they know that was actually kikiyama? Think about it. We know absolutely nothing about this guy. We don't know his real name, what he looks like, or where he actually comes from. He hasn't had any contact with anyone that we know about. I don't think he even interacts with his many fans on the many, many forums on his game. For all we know, this guy could be dead. Yet he somehow has contact with these developers and nobody else. Is this REALLY kikiyama or someone pretending to be him to profit on something he doesn't actually own? Because I just have a feeling the REAL Kikiyama wouldn't want this at all.
@saintatticus
@saintatticus 5 жыл бұрын
I'm kind of wondering is Kikiyama is actually more than one person possibly? I could be dead wrong of course, but that would kinda make a lick of sense in some aspects. I'm wondering how the hell they got into contact with them in the first place, really.
@para9938
@para9938 4 жыл бұрын
@@saintatticus It could be the other way around, it sounds impossible for them to contact Kikiyama but Kikiyama contacting them ? It's possible especially when Kadokawa are the ones behind RPG Maker, and Yume Nikki is a really famous game with lots of fans that was created with it so Kikiyama wouldn't be ignored because not unknown to them. In fact, two things make me think that this really is Kikiyama (wherever it's one person or a group). The first one is the presence of Kadokawa in this, and the second one is all that was said with this game being under Kikiyama's supervision. Nonindependent games studios would love to say as much as possible that this is their doing, with eventually something like "with the same creator of the original Yume Nikki" at the bottom, smaller than the name of their studio, the fact that it's not like this at all seem to show that legally someone else supposedly owning Yume Nikki got to choose a lot of things about this new game in exchange for letting them create it and sell it. Someone in that condition might not get to choose how big the budget for the game is or how the mechanics of the game are or exactly what the publicity for the game look like and won't choose every little detail either, but still get to choose a lot of things to make it closer to what they have in mind for it. And while the game lack content and is linear, it doesn't lack the Yume Nikki things in it and the main themes of this game are like following a few themes of the original, as if this was a sequel. Beside, while the whole "this game was made under the supervision of Kikiyama" could be communication without any link to the real Kikiyama (the game studio lying to get money), it requires the game studio understanding the fans to have the idea of doing it like this... and let's just say that Kadokawa is not so good at that yet given how the RPG maker franchise evolved... they get better but they still mostly think like businessmen. People saying that buying Yume Nikki dream diary for $20 is too much must be joking, did they ever took a look at how much you need to get one of the RPG Maker ? It's between 70 and $80 for the last one, and it's without all the musics and graphics and stuff that they usually have inside (which raise the price because you buy the right to use them in a game that you are then allowed to sell). Here they still exist in DLCs but clearly they don't understand the fans, what the fans of RPG Maker wanted was an RPG Maker costing $20 and costing $80 once all the resources are bought, not to have an almost empty game maker still costing $80 and raising to $120 to get the resources. So, yeah, I'm saying the studio Kadokawa is not clever enough to lie about being supervised by Kikiyama while making the game ('cause they would't think about phrasing it that way) nor are they understanding enough to have a game this close to the original, it would have been a lot more different from the original if someone haven't chosen for them, and in fact I doubt they even would have had the idea of making the game in the first place.
