It's time for my Modern Horizons III set review! In this video I give my thoughts on every mono-black card in the set.
What my grades mean:
I use a letter grade system, and my grades usually fall into a bell curve (Very few A’s and F’s, lots of C’s.)
A - Bombs that are always your first pick, they completely warp the game in your favor, and they easily pull you into their color(s). You always first pick these. These are cards you are ecstatic to have in your deck. Most sets have 15-20 of these. Tend to mostly be Mythics or Rares, though sometimes an Uncommon gets there.
(Unstable Glyph Bridge, Zoetic Glyph, Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal)
B - Premium removal spells and highly efficient creatures, often worth first picking. Still strong enough to pull you into their colors, but not quite as game or draft warping as A’s are. These are cards you feel good about having in your deck, and you would play several copies of most of them. Mostly Uncommons and higher, but there are usually 5-10 commons that get there too.
(Oltec Cloud Guard, Inverted Iceberg, Join the Dead)
C - Filler. These are cards you neither feel good or bad about having in your deck. You play them if you’re in their colors, but they don’t tempt you to go into their color at all. Usually includes reasonably efficient creatures, good combat tricks, and removal spells. These appear at all rarities, but are most frequently Common. (Ironpaw Aspirant, Brackish Blunder, River Herald Guide)
D - Playable in an emergency. These are cards that you don’t feel so good about playing, but in a pinch, sometimes you just have to play them. These are often inefficient vanilla creatures or overly narrow cards. These appear at all rarities. (Frilled Cave Wurm, Glowcap Lantern, Seeker of Sunlight)
F - Unplayable. These are cards that you should never play. There are very few of these in modern Limited formats, but they do appear at all rarities, with the most usually appearing at Rare and Common. These are cards whose effects are pretty much useless or overly narrow. (The Enigma Jewel, Canonized in Blood, Hit the Mother Lode)
There are two categories of cards that I give two grades to: Build Arounds and Sideboard Cards.
Build Around: These are cards that need special synergy to be at their best - synergy that won’t just come naturally. For these cards, I give one grade indicating how I think the card will perform in a typical deck of that color, and another grade if you manage to get there on synergy. (Gargantuan Leech, Terror Tide, Throne of the Grim Captain)
Sideboard Cards: These are generally cards that are Ds or Fs in your mainboard, but can perform much better out of the sideboard - at least as a C or higher

I love the fact that we have shilgengar as a card now. For those unaware, he was the demon that originally led Edgar Markov to the ritual that turned him into a vampire. The ritual involved angel blood, hence the sceond part of his first ability. The second ability is pretty self explanatory in regards to the lore, I think. I always love it when lore and cards line up like this.

It's occurring to me that part of the pitch for this set seems to be fixed busted metas. Black Summer, Eldrazi Winter, Mirrodin Artifact Sludge, and Kaladesh Energy all making a re-entrance, but tuned to hopefully not reiterate any of them. It'll be interesting to see how it turns out in the long run

Notably, unlike Necropotence, Necrodominance draws cards, meaning the three-card-in-a-turn payoffs might be achieveable on demand at the cost of 3 life.

Crabomination is an AMAZING name. Also, Arcbound Condor, if you have another Artifact Creature, is a perfect Emerge From Artifact sacrifice.

I don't know about the Chtonian number rating. Plenty of Spawns in this set and it generates 3 mana by itself so it basically turns any spawn you generate into any 3-cost or less creature in your GY for 2 mana. It's probably not amazing but I think it'll be quite good in some decks.

Marionette Apprentice seems insane, maybe the best blood artist variant ever since it has a decent body and comes with another creature to sac. Yeah it doesnt gain you life but it is worth it for that 1/1.

Blood Artist also did stuff when the opponents' creatures died, but yeah -- it's strong.

I’m super disappointed in Wurmcoil Larva. Yeah, I’m limited it’s good. Basically always a two-for-one, potentially a three-for-one is always playable in limited. But that thing is so overcosted that it will pretty much not see play in constructed. Poor Wurmcoil Engine, my beloved.

22:38 surely it's more like a D+ as in theory the ability could be useful for most decks. It's not as unplayable as those exclusively constructed oriented cards

I'm just a *bit* higher on Necrodominance just because I think you don't necessarily need to be as heavy black as its BBB casting cost would indicate, because it's not the sort of card you would likely cast on curve even if you could, because you want to get as many "free" draws during your draw step in a game before you lock yourself into having to pay life for your cards. Between all of the black-producing MDFCs, Solar Transformer at uncommon, and the cycle of Evolving Wilds variants, I don't think it will be that hard to get a deck that can consistently cast this by turn 5-6 or so if that's your goal.

it’s a card that adds to the board and draws a card- by definition a two for one. Any creature that cantrips is a two for one

I think you are really overestimating Crabomnation. This is a 6 mana card by the time you play this there is a very good chance the only card left in their hand is a land they are bluffing with. So it's basically a 6mana 5/5 that also plays a random card from their deck/library... sure you might get their ulamog but most likely you just getting like a random 3 drop. Hardly A+ material.

A random 3 drop + 5/5 is a great deal for six mana. It will also make them discard something legit about half the time on turn 6, more if you emerge. It's always a 2-for-1 and often a 3 for 1.

@@NizzahonMagic I agree that this doesn't seem like an A+ card. I feel it has a lot of potential, but it's still a random. Of course, the times in which you exile someone's Eldrazi, it will look like the new best card from the set, but this is far and away a stretch to say the least. I like it, and I hope it performs well. If I had to give it a grade: B-

@moshladaan It virtually always gives you a 2 for 1. It's random but not that random. Maybe it isn't an A+, but the floor on the card is an A-.

I guess we look at it differently then, since I think of it as a 2 drop 2 power black creature with lifelink, while you're looking at exact stats and cost.

Tarmogoyf rarely benefits from opponents graveyards if built correctly. Not only that, but this gets bigger WITHOUT having to murder yourself, like in Death's Shadow. And to escape, it's 3 mana and delirium. Can't stress enough that in the right deck, this is hardly difficult and will force opponents to bring in graveyard hate or waste extra removal on it.
