It's traditional in the major pro sports for the league to grant each franchise an exclusive "territory" within a certain distance from their home site, where no other franchise can locate without consent and restitution. So a struggling NHL franchise, for example, could not suddenly choose to relocate to Chicago or Toronto or NYC and infringe on the "home turf" (as it were) of existing clubs.
@johnnyslokes27122 ай бұрын
@tc2882 But the Islanders are a thing. Other than not having an actual reason I don't see why Toronto couldn't support two teams. I mean it would be kinda stupid. A lot of eastern teams territories overlap. Some of those teams overlap in between Canada and the US too
@tc28822 ай бұрын
@@johnnyslokes2712 From wikipedia: "As part of the relocation deal (from Denver to NJ), the Devils had to compensate the Islanders, Rangers and Flyers for encroaching on the established teams' territory. The combined total the Devils owed the three teams was nearly $20 million.[24]" When the NHL expanded into Nassau County with the Islanders, the new franchise owners paid the Rangers for the territorial infringement. There's apparently been talk of moving a struggling franchise to the Hamilton area, but would face opposition from both Toronto and Buffalo; it's in neither teams' interest to have competition for fans, so compensation would certainly be required to convince them to allow such a move. From what I found, the NHL grants each team a 50 mile radius from their home arena of exclusivity.

@tc28823 ай бұрын
Arguably the best goalie ever (although Patrick Roy fans would object). So good the NHL actually changed the rules because of him -- it's because of his puck-handling abilities that they instituted the "trapezoid" area behind the goal which limits where the goalie can handle the puck because Brodeur would often go deep into the corners or out to the faceoff circles, frustrating attackers. He also has 3 career goals, the NHL record for goalies.

If you're a hockey fan in Jersey, and you like the state of New Jersey, I don't get how you don't root for the Devils. The Devils are Jersey, and they represent it unabashedly. Unfortunately due to heritage, Jersey will always be a contested market, but it does make for some sweet rivalries.
