Skinny has never gone away, especially living in East Asia. Even in the west, the whole curvy and plus size, still leant on the illusions of skinny - basically having big boobs and butts on a skinny frame, and no double chins, small faces and so on. I'm so tired...I feel so much older than I actually am seeing all these body trends coming back around. But also I'm old enough to not really care about them as much. I remember when I was at my lowest weight in highschool. I got so many compliments and recently as a woman in my 20s, I had someone ask me "Why'd you let yourself go?" I'm very blunt and speak before I think sometimes and I left them shook because I said "Because I wasn't eating when I was a kid." And it's true. I came from a poor household. If I wanted my siblings and my sick mom to eat, I had to skip breakfast and dinner. All my food I got was from the free lunch program. I also passed out A LOT. Even at that smallest weight, I felt like I was too fat thanks to the 2014 tumblr girl thinspo stuff that was floating around. Edited to add: I also haven't "let myself go." I'm a normal body weight. I'm actually considered underweight for being postpartum, but that was because of medical complications during pregnancy that could've killed me.

@NkirukasWrld Thank you! I'm doing better, and I think the only thing that kept me calm during my birth was the fact that they gave me an epidural and had me on a morphine drip 😅❤️. I definitely think since I was a part of tumblr and other internet spaces instead of instagram at the time in high school, I had a different POV and ideals of the body type that was popular in the 2010s. Seeing H*roin Chic come back into style genuinely made me feel deep concern for a lot of young girls and women because of what I witnessed online at the time and what I witnessed my friends who shared the space go through. Now that I'm back on Instagram, I'm already seeing a bunch of people in comment sections trying to further push the unhealthy and unrealistic thin body types that got circled around back on Tumblr. That whole phase occurred when Lana dropped her album, and "aesthetic" mood boards got popular. In every mood board, there was always an image of a really thin girl/woman either crying, smoking, looked sick, and/or had bruising and visible ribs. It feels like the internet has gone full circle.

In freshman high school, I got extremely ill, and I couldn't eat because I literally had no appetite. We had our physicals to do for the volleyball season, and when I stepped on the scale, I was 128 lbs. The last time I was 128lbs was probably in 6th grade or even elementary school. Even my coach was worried and told me to eat. I had hollowed cheeks, and my ribs were showing. Apparently, though, that is the required weight for my height according to the BMI calculator. My parents, to this day, say that I looked so good that year. I've seen pictures of my mom when she was my age, and she was 103-105lbs then. She was literally sick looking. I understand that being skinny is better than being obese because it's healthier, but there's still a limit with even being skinny.
@firefly30032 күн бұрын
@kristinaisayeva7169 BMI calculators suck. Before I was pregnant, I was considered overweight because of the fact that I had a decent bit of muscle on my arms, legs, and some on my back. Now that they're gone, I have loose skin on my arms and back. I'm trying to get back to that, but I know it'll take some time as it takes a whole year after giving birth for the body to go back to it's normal hormone cycle and completely heal. I'm sorry that you experienced that! I definitely worry for a lot of women and girls with the current thin body trend coming back because of exactly what you experienced. It's all too common of a mindset to have. My poor SIL is actually going through what you did right now, but luckily her mom is actively trying to help her instead of shaming her.

I think that the rise in popularity of Kpop has had a huge influence on the public turning back to the skinny ideal as well. anyone who is aware of the Kpop industry knows that being skinny Is one of the biggest beauty standards in Kpop, and curvy figures haven't always been praised in South Korea.

@northrnstar6 күн бұрын
@@ningsquaredddd no, they have a point. i know a lot of kpop fans are not like kpop idols, but the beauty standards in korea do have a very strong impact in the west, or at the very least in spaces where people consume kpop. like glamourizing idols being super thin and being "body tea" while shaming idols who are more muscular or not super thin and reinforcing certain beauty standards such as nose and face shapes and even making fun of idols who have naturally darker skin tones. it's also not a coincidence a lot of girls with eating disorders compare themselves to skinny female idols.
@бронза.вафля.конус5 күн бұрын
@@northrnstar The point is that most people are not not kpop fans and are therefore not comparing themselves to idols. Thank you for covering this topic. I want to warn: "evolutionary psychology" is not really respected academia. It's just eugenics, essentially - it's full of racists and misogynists using theory that kinda sounds legit to justify their prejudices. They can literally explain away why skinny or curvy or fat women are the "evolutionary standard" with the same arguments, based on their personal preference. Same goes for their explanations for white/European beauty standards and the antiblack explanations for why lighter skin is preferred. The way body standards are determined is cultural. This has been evidenced by how standards keep changing every decade or so and how different cultures can have very different standards simultaneously. Also how women and men have different standards and preferences for themselves and each other.

i dont understand why people are so easily influenced and idk, shamed? like... a man tells you to look flawless or else they wont like you, and women just follow suit like there isnt billions of people on earth. why would you ever want to please and attract someone like that? im aware that my style is unique and most people dont like it, and im fine with that. im introverted, so honestly its only a bonus. i only attract friends and partners that i actually would like to be around, because theyre unique too. it feels like everyone is so fake these days. do people actually like the way they look like, or are they all just following a trend? its just genuinely confusing to me. its like watching a flock of sheep walking in circles, following each other and getting nowhere. im so happy im blessed enough to take a step back and realise im my own person and dont need to follow some silly trends, created solely to sell me something.

As a woman who grew up chubby, later on I lost some weight, and I was considered curvy, and now I’m just fat again, yeah, the obsession with being skinny never went away, I don’t blame them, I also want to be skinny, but I’m not going out of my way to do it for others, no way in hell lol also important to notice that I don’t worship being skinny, my skinny is probably different from other people, I enjoy being curvy, even if I’m considered fat by others, I like myself more, so win-win

love the vid! i like how you go into some history that proves the changing standards. Just a suggestion on how to make it next-level: looking up some of the pronunciations of these things would help! (example: heroin chic is pronounced heroin shee-k, it is the french word for fashionable or stylish instead of "chick"... also Marilyn, Bardot, Michelangelo...not a big deal but definitely a small thing that makes a lot of difference for the listener and they will know how to say it correctly after your video when they talk about it with others :) )

I feel like the "ideal" body changes when the current trend gets too out of control. Like when everyone wanted to be skinny and some people became anorexic, the curvy trend entered. Now that curves (specifically bbls) are becoming too over the top, the skinny trend makes a comeback. The same happens with any beauty trend. The current trend becomes too extreme so the opposite to it becomes the new trend

More and more studies show that fillers (including HA) stay in one's body for long years - they just migrate to different areas than intended. They may also block lymphatic system = body's detox in that area doesn't work properly. This may potentially lead to cancer... Unfortunately, hyaluronidase - used to dissolve hialuronic acid - has it's own set of serious side effects...

The thing about body types as fashion: like you said a lot of trends are inspired by POC. Not even recent years with fuller lips, braids, tanner body, BBLs and wasps figure but also in the past! Some historians think that victorian bustle was inspired by black body types (often fetishized and sexualized seen as "exotic"). Saartjie Baartman comes to mind, paraded and whose body fascinated victorians and sadly her body parts were displayed in Musee de l'homme for 150 YEARS. Her body was repatriated after 200 years after she was born. I think heroine Chic is just another example of things that are cool when rich, but seen as bad when a poor person does it. Artifically ripped jeans on a skinny middle class person? Cool and stylish. Ripped jeans on someone who had one pair untill it literally ripped on them because theyre poor and cant mend it? Its seen as gross. Its also very similar to when tuberculosis was seen as an illness of rich, poetic and romantic people (turns out its out of lack of hygene). It would show that someone is sickly and fragile and also doesnt have to work manually. People would draw blue veins on their chests to make their skin look thinner, sheer and delicate. Whats popular is whats least attainable too. You plucked all your eyebrows into skinny arches? Now a new trend is popular - bushy eyebrows. Besides the fact that throughout history, fashionability wasnt as much about the size of someone as about the shape of their figure, thats why people who dont do research about historical fashion include a scene of tightlacing a corset on a skinny actress (not many people tightlaced and corset were comfortable, many women wore them while working in factories and in the fields) to force a sinched waist while to achieve a fashionable sillouette people would use padding. Or even edited their photos! some people did care about a small waist but it was usually achieved by illusion. (im not talking about people who most likely had some sort of eating disorders, starved and tightlaced often). And today after wasp figure isnt "popular" anymore and celebs are removing theirs or going on ozempic, poorer people that saved so much money to get it now cannot reverse it. Similarly how a rich person that plucked all their eyebrows out like i mentioned can just buy a hair transplant for their eyebrows, but a poorer person is stuck with pencil eyebrows. tiny nitpick: The thing about prohibition: it was about piestic protestants that saw the society as sinful and evil and thought the root of it was alcohol. It was also about women wanting to get rights. Also also Flappers werent seen very well. They were the first generation of sexually progressive women (white women got a right to vote in 1920s in US) and being a loud, woman that loved alcohol, partied were seen as threatening to the moral order. I agree tho many women were drawn to the idea despite not being able to be one. Many flappers were from richer families who had time to not do much besides having fun. Many women joined the workforce (about 2 million) in 1920s but it was still just around 25% of population (i dont remember if it was total population or 25% of women). Hope my rambling is semi coherent im watching the video late.

Hi gurl, I’m happy to be this early on such a great video/topic! Based on your comments, I thought to share a bit of my own story regarding skinniness and thoughts of plastic surgery. This might be a long one, so apologies in advance!: When you mentioned getting surgery at such a young age, I can’t help but think back to when I wanted (and honestly, I somewhat still do) to get a breast reduction/lift after losing about 60-70lbs after corona. Growing up super slim, then gaining a decent bit of weight from ages 13-18, I often struggled with wanting to change my body and/or appearance for both health & vanity reasons. Constantly trying to lose weight (I even had a journal where I would write my feelings….which was a funnnnn read when I found it a few years ago) during my critical moments as a teenager, I only lost weight during the panacea b/c I decided to only do it for me/myself. Without the pressure of being around others in school/events, I truly sat with myself and decided to eat better & exercise on MY terms. Fast forward a few months before I went to college, I was left noticeably “slim”, but almost more insecure than when I was plus size. Feeling down about my breast shape and size (or lack thereof at the time lol), I ended up leaving school during my first semester to receive consultation on a breast lift. Almost like a sign from the universe, I was never able to get ahold of the proper surgeons to move forward in time - beyond the multiple referrals made by my primary care doctor (which he even said I didn’t need). As the months rolled on and I continued back on campus that following semester, I realized it was something I should solely do for myself when I was ready. Not wanting a guy to find me “less attractive” b/c of my breasts, it was actually the men I dated/talked to who almost couldn’t believe I had such an insecurity. With no one besides my sister and my best friend attending the same college as me, I forget these people had never seen me as anything other than skinny. This was even a distinct characteristic my friends would describe me as - which was funny as I was the one forced to sit on peoples laps during carpools to parties 😂. Creating a weird complex in my mind with this information alone, I still to this day struggle with body dysmorphia. Having been on both sides of being plus size and now “slim-thick” lol, I can’t help but wonder how much of my feelings are perpetuated by societies standards? I appreciate your perspective on this topic, and how there truly is more to the issue than meets the eye. Graduating with my bachelor’s this past summer, I have learned a lot about myself during my last four years of college. Sharing this to anyone who might also struggle with body image issues (regardless of weight loss), just know it’s not a one-size fits all battle. However, it’s a journey that evolves as you continue to grow and change. Considering surgery at such a young age to “fix” what I believed I caused with my weight gain/extreme loss - it’s truthfully about not only loving yourself, but finding yourself eternally beautiful inside AND out! 💜

I've had my own issues with these trends. In my family, being thick has always been in. No matter what. I have two gorgeous sisters who are curvy and have that hourglass figure. My cousins too. I, on the other hand, have a more rectangular body shape with hipdips. For a while, I kinda knew my body was different to theirs, but never knew why until social media made these things an issue. However, at uni, I have skinny friends. I was always stuck between wanting to have a big butt, smaller waist with huge boobs and being skinny with a flat tummy. NOW, I'm like f**k this. I just try to prioritise eating healthy, getting good sleep, and working out.

I’m 29 now & I’ve been suffering somewhat often incredibly. I didn’t know that you can get Breast implant illness (BII). I had never heard of it. Nor did I know that you are supposed to undergo surgery to get them replaced every 10-15 years. Now as soon as I have the money again, I’m getting them removed. Natural is so much better.

I think what we should be promoting is that there's someone out there for everyone. If men and women both stopped trying to be other people and fit into these constructed social norms, we would all be a lot happier. But i fear that wont happen anytime soon because beauty IS capitalism. Its too ingrained in society and media to the point it's essentially permanently wired into our brains to fit into the mold. I hope that we can all collectively break out of our fears of being considered outside of the norm. It all starts with community after all
