As a person completing his PhD in literature, I can safely say that no PhD candidate or literature professor "reviews" or "judges" books. Ever. Magazine writers, journalists and book reviewers may do it but never actual hardcore Literature researchers and professors working in universities. What we do is analyze the sociocultural impact, political themes in a specific novel/short story/play/poem, its publication history, its readership, the author's biography, their political and cultural views being articulated through the book etc in order to understand what the book represents or tells us about a certain period of time in society and culture. It requires a lot of additional research in philosophy, history, sociology, political theory to fully grasp the lasting value of a book. We don't simply read a book to judge it as "Good" or "crass". In fact, really impactful literary research is all about challenging established intellectual and cultural hierarchies. Even Charles Dickens was considered only a simple, mainstream popular writer catering to lower middle and working class British readers for a long time. But today he is revered by many as the most iconic Victorian British novelist because of the immense social and cultural impact his works had around the world for different historical reasons. Literature scholars made that change in perception happen over the last 50-60 years.

Chetan Bhagat's drivel about his books not catering to intellectuals because there is no scope of comparison or "pallets" as he says is possibly one of ignoramus arguments I've come across.He says, "For some people Rushdie has no meaning and for some people Rushdie is amazing" Are you serious ? What kind of author in any world would hold this kind of defensive for his/her dimwit readers. You don't have to have a Ph.D. or a degree in English Literature to appreciate the writings of Rushdie, J.M. Coetzee or Hillary Mantel. His arguments echoes the reasoning of a teenager.And he actually reads books on feminism by Sheryl Sandberg, a capitalistic crony who under the garb of feminism made a lot of money for Facebook and Hillary Clinton who at a time was opposed to abortions.He doesn't understands that creativity doesn't caters to the masses. The problem with him he is associating classic liberalism in each of his defenses.(every person has distinct taste in books,movies,celebrities and whatever and so every person is the ultimate judge of his/her individual desires which is the highest form of humanism in the universe). If that where the case then we should'nt have Booker prize judges it should be simply a vote by people who love reading (because people differ in their tastes of books) , we shouldnt have Oscar Judges it should be simply a vote by people who love watching movies and same goes for leaders,CEO'S.etc. But that's not the case why ? Because most people are ill-informed, don't have the grasp of many things, intellectual ability to understand things and yes, some are plain stupid.Lastly, I'm sorry you're not making me "think differently' rather I more than convinced about your writing abilities on IIM-IIT novels shoveled down at people's vacuous brains. I would have more fun switching on my fan than reading a Chetan Bhagat novel.

What should his answer be? Clearly, people who've been exposed to better writing don't care much for his work and people who've never read a book before seem to enjoy his work a lot. Isn't he being refreshingly honest in admitting that his writing is not for everyone? And that it's unfair to compare his style of writing to someone else's? And what is wrong in being inspired by Sheryl Sandberg's book? Lean in is a wonderful book that talks about how gender and social stereotypes have caused women to miss out on workplace success. I think it's a wonderful book to read for anyone is who doesn't not understand the feminist movement.
@sainair
@sainair 8 жыл бұрын
I'm not bothered by his writings being poorly written or less thought provoking.I'm least bothered whether he has a sizable followers of bland readers. The thing I was taken aback was his ludicrous defensive claims about intellectuals like "Who creates these constructs ? They are the ones who think they designed the pyramids" You can tell he himself reeks of inferiority complex. It's not laughable but cringeworthy when he actually goes to wax to experience a woman's pain. Moreover, If you actually think "Lean In" is a good book you then you should probably read reviews by "average woman" on goodreads. The author led a privileged life with likes of power elite in silicon valley, not to mention a millionaire husband. With 24hr nanny service to take care of her children, chauffeurs and cooks at her disposal I think life would have been really tough for her. Her narrative accounts doesn't really cater to a normal woman working a day job. And Oh .Did I mention her equally obnoxious dating tips for women ? (Ask him to come to Sao Paulo,Brazil for a date to test if he is accommodating to your career another example of Sandberg's complete obliviousness to wealth). If you read a book on Feminism by Sandberg it's like reading a book on Indian Struggles of Independence by the then British Viceroy.

ok cool! I get your point on what annoys you about what he had to say here. And I agree! I still have a beef with your rejection of Sheryl Sandbergs book as a must read to understand the feminist movement though:) I don't mean to get into an argument but I feel you're being a little harsh in your criticism of her book. My wife and I have both read the book and felt it was thoughtfully written and brings up some excellent points about the challenges women face in trying to get ahead. I don't think her wealth and what not should has any bearing on her thoughts on the subject. Just like Bill Gates being a multi-billionaire has no relevance to his thoughts about eradicating poverty or how Reza Aslan's faith has no bearing on his scholarly analysis of other religions.

I understand Chetan Bhagat might not be at par with Salman Rushdie, or other intellectual writers, but I've never understood this extreme level of hate for him. If one doesn't like his books, just don't read them. People in India took so many years to question senseless bollywood movies which is much more toxic than a book as it's visual content and has much more consumers but people never had this level of hate for their directors or writers. DDLJ portrays a man acting creepy as a romantic gesture, and it took more than 2 decades for people to realize that It's toxicity. Also the priveleged elitist crowd spreading hate here, India is a country where not everyone has the privilege and access to English education, a lot of them can't even understand what Salman Rushdie is writing. Atleast they can read Chetan Bhagat's Books which can help them learn a language.

That's not the point, that if you don't like him, don't read his books. He is in public life, so he has to face criticism, hate too, if he is loved by many, too. This guy has made his image of having "left" his meaty jobs after great iim and iit, for his literature career. But in reality he never leaves a chance to sell his iit-iim tag. Actually that only is his usp. Had he been from some ordinary college, no one would have read him. About the content of his books, he is a typical entertainment without even a touch of intelligence. He actually is Ekta kapoor. You may enjoy, but in the end you would not have got any food for brain. Completely foolisg books. People like hin, Ekta kapoor etc are great at marketing, and have destroyed their respective fields with their mindless creations.

And then in November 2016, Trump won. 7:54 Abhinandan and his intellectual condescension and elitism shows in his smirk. One of the answers on Quora said - any opinion against Hillary was met with me being called a racist and an uncultured person, so, for the 1st time in my life I went and voted, and when I voted for Trump,it felt like a big FU to all those arrogant TV anchors. When I asked many of my friends, they also said, they voted for Trump. So, Abhinandan, pal, the joke's on you. Trump won. And Modi won. I thought this would be Chetan speaking like a male Shobha De (!) - but surprise surprise! He was smart, intelligent, down to earth (like when he described his level!), wise (he knows that Patanjali is good and has the courage to say so - I guess that comes with most people how have lived abroad and realise what is truly good in India) I loved Chetan's first book (...point...), found his second one so-so (the cricket one), and stopped reading him thereafter. However, after watchign this interview, I WILL definitely watch his next interview - especially if it is on News laundry!

Chetan Bhagat -a suggestion : please stop writing novels.Given your pedigree as far as your previous career is concerned you would have been in a good position had you still been working in the banking sector. Simply put, your novels are below par, simply below par. Read some good books by Arundhati Roy, Shashi Tharoor, V.S Naipaul, Amish Tripathi to name a few. This will help you to understand a lot about literature and Indian culture too !!

Patanjali is a startup just like Apple was once and that daadhi waala is the early Steve Jobs. WTF is he talking about. This guy comes from a corporate world and doesn't know about how Patanjali does excessive marketing and sell cheap products on the name of swadeshi.

I am no Chetan Bhagat fan but when you speak about a spectrum there is no up and down it is not a ladder and with that apology he could have gotten a proper response without the debate on elitism.

I have read a few of his books and I was not impressed. I only read them because I was stuck in my hostel a few years ago due to the snow and I neither had my phone with me nor any other book. I don't understand why he is so popular but if people like his books, who are we to say he is not a good writer. Sure, he may never win a booker prize but he writes books for the masses and people like it. I don't like it but to each his own. Also his love for Modi is super annoying.
