Note that the ump waited until he saw Kozma "camping under" the ball. It's exactly what the ump is supposed to do - NOT call it too early. Unfortunately for the Braves, at that same moment that Kozma began to camp under it, he also seems to react as if he thought he heard Holliday call him off. We went through a rut in August, but we're already pulling out of it. Look at the Matty's: both of them are in the top five MLB players for average, if I'm not mistaken. Either average or hits, can't remember which. Yadi has been pretty solid all year. Craig was on pace for 100 RBI's in early September before his injury. We have excellent backup players for days. Our bullpen is one of the strongest in the league, in my opinion. We're going to be gravy in the playoffs.

For one, Atlanta is losing 6-3 in the 8th, whose fault is that. For two, the infield fly rule has nothing to do with where a ball lands. "(Infield Fly) Comment: On the infield fly rule the umpire is to rule whether the ball could ordinarily have been handled by an infielder-not by some arbitrary limitation such as the grass, or the base lines. I love mindless hyperbole. "Worst call ever". It was a questionable call, but a call that is made several times during the year in that exact situation. When you say it is the worst call ever. All you are really saying is that you have never watched baseball before. I can think of a dozen calls which were not questionable but 100 percent wrong. Calls in much bigger games too. I do like how you think that call cost them the game. It wasnt the numerous errors the Braves made. It was the call that nobody scored on. Because clearly they would have put a 4 spot up if it wasnt for that 1 call.

antigov84 Ok -- I'm wrong. The absolute worst call in the history of Baseball was when Jim Joyce ruined the perfect game for Armando Galaraga by making a clearly incorrect call with two outs in the 9th inning. But at least Joyce did the right thing and admitted afterwards that he was wrong -- and he personally apologized to Galaraga later. So this call was the 2nd worst call in the history of baseball. The Infield Fly Rule must be called EARLY, and the infielder must be able to catch the ball EASILY. Neither of those applied here -- the infielder had to run backwards at least 40 feet, and the call was made only AFTER he'd stumbled. The ball had been in the air for 10 seconds before the call was made -- that's not early! The call was absolutely, positively 100% wrong, and I can't believe it wasn't reversed on appeal. The infield-fly rule was designed so that an infielder couldn't deliberately drop the ball and then turn a double- or triple-play. That was NOT the situation here at all! They had NO chance of turning a double-play whatsoever. It was absolutely the wrong call -- violates the spirit of the rule completely. Whether the Braves would've won the game or not is unknown (I did say "probably" cost them the game). Bases-loaded with one out is a FAR DIFFERENT situation than 2 on with 2 out. Momentum counts for a LOT in Baseball.

Be honest, you havent been a baseball fan for long. The 2nd worst call? What about Eric Gregg in 1997? What about Richie Garcia in 1996? How about Don Denkinger in 85? Hell, one of baseball iconic moments, Jackie Robinson stealing home in 55, was a blown call. The ball was catch-able, and should have been caught. The reason for the delay in the call is because he had to judge that Kozma would catch it. Once Kozma plants his feet, the call is made..... However, how can you say he couldnt let the ball drop in front of him, throw to third and then to second? A double play is not out of the question. It isnt likely, but that is the exact spirit of the call. About 2 months before this game, that exact same call was used in Toronto. In fact, if you pay attention, you will see this call happen a couple of times a year, under the exact same circumstances.

antigov84 I've been a baseball fan since the early '70s. I was at the game the day after Hank Aaron hit his 715th home-run -- had I been born on April 8th instead of April 9th, I would've been there on the day he hit his 715th, as I was there because my Uncle bought tickets for the whole family in celebration of my birthday. (Still have the ticket-stub and a Hank Aaron autographed ball I got from him during batting practice before the game.) I'll grant you that Garcia's call in '96 was truly awful -- the kid leaning over the wall and catching the ball, and Garcia calling it a home-run. Horrible mistake, true -- but he admitted the mistake after the game. Gregg in '97 was not great, but his extremely generous strike-zone was consistent for both teams throughout the whole game, though -- that's just a judgment call. Bad judgment, sure, but still -- as long as the strike-zone is consistent for both sides throughout the whole game, then there's no problem in my mind. Livan Hernandez was just better at painting the generous corners of that strike-zone that day, so he struck out a huge number of Atlanta batters. Don't remember Denkinger's call in '85 -- had to look that one up. Clearly a terrible call, that. But *none* of those above calls occurred in the *final* games of those series! This was a one-and-only game in a one-game series -- every single call was vitally important! Further, Kozima never planted his feet! He never stopped moving! He was running backwards until he heard the outfielder behind him, then ran forwards away from the ball. It was a mistake you see made by dozens of teams, dozens of times per season. The umpire didn't just make a bad judgment-call there -- he *broke the rules*! The infield-fly rule is for fly-balls hit in the infield, not the outfield. The infielder has to be able to *easily* catch the ball -- running backwards for 40 feet is *not* an easy catch. As soon as the infielder left the infield, the infield-fly rule simply did not apply at all. This wasn't bad judgment by an umpire, this was a *deliberate* breaking of the rules of the game that should've been reversed by the other umpires after it happened. Very different than a missed call of a bang-bang play or a generous strike-zone behind the plate.

Denkingers call in 85 was in the 9th inning of game 6, which should have been the final game. It directly resulted in a loss of the game, and the loss of the world series. Greggs strike zone got bigger and bigger as the game went on. The final strike called on McGriff was easily 2 feet off the plate. This isnt even the worst call against the Braves. 91 series, Hrbeck pulls Gant off of first and Drew Coble ruled he was out. A far worse call. I played baseball all the way through college, and I umped baseball from 13-19... The infield fly rule is not only called on the infield. This is the definition of the infield fly rule. "Rule 2.00 (Infield Fly) On the infield fly rule the umpire is to rule whether the ball could ordinarily have been handled by an infielder-not by some arbitrary limitation such as the grass, or the base lines. The umpire must rule also that a ball is an infield fly, even if handled by an outfielder, if, in the umpire’s judgment, the ball could have been as easily handled by an infielder. The infield fly is in no sense to be considered an appeal play. The umpire’s judgment must govern, and the decision should be made immediately." That play fit the criteria for the call.So again, a judgement call and not a violation of the rules as you put it.

Completely classless by Braves fans. They didn't deserve to win after trashing the field like that.

Michael Terrell if I was there I wouldn't have done it but this is an all time great Brave and player in general and his career was being shortened because of a faulty call. Also you can't accuse braves fans as a whole anyways especially since I'm a braves fan and wouldn't give in to the act.

Gotta agree. That call was nothing short of a travesty but throwing trash ain't gonna do it.

You can't blame the entire situation on ALL Braves fans especially when a majority included drunken rage heads. I was at this game and didn't even throw a piece of trash onto the field. I've been a Braves fan since I was 5 years old and never resort to this kind of behavior but at the same time the umpires were making bad horrible calls all game and I guess after that bullshit infield fly everyone just had enough
