Excellent video! Nice to see they made it. Dry cold is much better than wet cold for hardier palms

Las Cruces, New Mexico is the location. If your winters are dry but really cold your palm could make it. Hard frost with a lot of water or moisture will totally burn a palm.

That's true....the drier the winter the better in cold climates.

Never, ever, cut any green or even yellow fronds off of your beloved palm tree! Ever! Wait until they turn completely brown and hang down, only then trim. Palm trees feed on the green to yellow fronds and even on browned ones. Give them a chance to finish what they are doing!

Here in Christchurch city, in the (colder) "South Island" of New Zealand (as we're in the Southern Hemisphere, , further South = colder Winter) A mediterranean Fan Palm of that size would sell for about NZ $ 4,000 ! That said we never get frosts of more than about -7*C so Mediterranean palms would NEVER suffer the damage like yours. On the occasions we have snow, (perhaps 1 year in 5) it's only a few inches and melts later that day, or in the next day or two after. cheerio

KiwiCatherineJemma actually the Southern Hemisphere has warmer winters than the northern hemisphere because the Southern Hemisphere has less landmass and more ocean which keeps you warmer. Land cools down much faster than water.

Lots of C humilis palms down here on the south coast of the UK? They don't seem to be bothered by our cool damp climate and grow slowly to a huge size. It rarely goes down to 20 degrees here and that only happens about once every 5 years or so. I have many of these palms in my front and backyard and some of these are about 12 feet tall and wide. I hope your palm trees got through that last terrible winter you have just had.

Mexican Fan Palm will get its fronds burnt below 25-26F but it will survive down to 12-15F as long as it does not get snow or too much freezing rain in winter.

If date palms can take -5F in New Mexico then dont tell me they cant handle the 15-32F winters of Dallas. Seriously. Everywhere i read i hear that they cant take Dallas winters yet i see them growing in New Mexico and even LONDON. wtf?

The winter in Dallas is maybe warmer im comperation to Las Cruces but you have much more humudity and this factor may kill al lot of datepalms. Dry heat and dry frost is better for a palm tree

I still can't understand why so many people still insist on growing Washingtonia robustas in El Paso, Southern New Mexico, and extreme Southwestern Utah. These parts of the American Southwest are borderline of the robusta. But they just never last there. It's inevitable they always die just after the palms made their 10-year mark. Every decade or so these areas always get that cold snap and 80% of the Washingtonia robustas croak. It's embarrassing. You see the dumb dead palm corpses and you want to laugh at the home-owners for attempting to grow such a palm. The FILIFERA does much, much better than the robusta. Are people ignorant to the differences? Why do people bother messing with the robusta when the filifera is the way to go for borderline regions of the American Southwest like El Paso, Southern New Mexico, and Extreme Southwestern Utah. The Washingtonia filifera is a much safer option. It hardly ever dies in these areas. It's the more cold-hardy palm variety of the two. I imagine the primary reason people still mess with the Washingtonia robusta is ignorance. They can't distinguish between the two and wouldn't know which to pick anyway. Secondly, nurseries and stores may be pulling some dirty tricks on unsuspecting customers. They likely get the robusta palms cheaper and make a greater mark-up selling people these, so that's what they try to do. They should be telling people not to bother attempting to grow a robusta, but they may be greedy. Thirdly, the robusta is the glorious palm of Los Angeles and Hollywood and Beverly Hills that lines the wide Boulevards with towering rows of palm perfection... and that's perhaps what people want, regardless of how realistic their choice is. They want the massive towering palm that's synonymous with fun and sun and California and the whole lifestyle of relaxation and easy breezy times, et cetera. Well, that's just a quick theory I came up with. Because otherwise I don't know why anyone would waste time and money with a robusta in the areas I mentioned. They always die. Always. It's like clockwork. They do fine for about 5 years, maybe 10, maybe even 15 with some luck. But sooner or later that very rare cold front will arrive and kill all the robustas. In February of 2011 in the El Paso and Southern New Mexico area a cold snap came and wiped out over 85% of the entire population of robusta palms. It was a palm catastrophe. The filifera palms were completely fine. Well, whatever. That's my rant for the day. Sorry if I bored anyone reading this far.

Mexican palms do fair in El Paso,with winter fronds burn.But Las Cruces and St .George, Ut. forget it.Theyre just novelties.

@mickobrien3156 4 жыл бұрын
@@timothykissinger4883 If they just stuck with the California fan palm, the filifera, they'd all be fine. It's that they're ignorant to the differences. They just hear that the Mexican fan grows faster and taller... so that's what they all buy. Although, every decade a grave set back is all but guaranteed to hit all robustas. They die in EL PASO, LAS CRUCES, and ST. GEORGE. The filiferas get burned to hell, but almost always come back. NEVER BUY A MEXICAN FAN PALM, that is, the WASHINGTONIA ROBUSTA.... ONLY BUY A CALIFORNIA FAN PALM. that is, the WASHINGTONIA FILIFERA.
@mickobrien3156

@@timothykissinger4883 But I agree... I think El Paso is the easiest of those 3 places to grow a Mexican. It's slightly warmer than St. George and Las Cruces. Yes.
