How did the ash pass from the first (top) dish to the second dish since the first dish covers the perforations going to the second dish?

Thanks for the question. The system is under vacuum with a cloud of dust particles being drawn through several mini-chambers (each mini-chamber is the compartment containing a dish). There is enough space in each mini-chamber to allow the air to impact onto the medium in each dish and to move out through the perforations underneath each dish into the next chamber. In essence, the air is not blocked by the dish and the air does move around the dish into the next chamber. The particles with the largest size are deposited on the medium in the dish in the top chamber and the particles with the smallest size are deposited on the medium in dish in the bottom chamber. I hope this provides clarification.
