If you want to get in on this super early you can use the player search filters to search for players that have expiring contracts in 12, 6, or 3 months. I usually build a short-list for the next window as soon as one closes. Mainly important for the July window but you can get some good South Americans in January

TRIALIST TIP: do you have a reserve or youth team (obviously not a guarantee at lower levels)? dump your trialists in there and mitigate the effect on your senior squad's training

A missing tip is you can also add in a shortlist view if the player has been 'set to release' which the AI does as one in bulk some time I think in May, and because of that status you can start negotiating to sign them straight away without having to wait until the last month of the contract.

I signed Anthony Martial on a free in the National League...he'd been released on a free by Man United 2 years previously and been without a club for 2 years, but looked like he could do a hell of a job for me still, and was willing to play for a surprisingly low wage. And he could...for the 5 or 6 games in the whole season he wasnt injured

I like to use the prompt about my own players contracts expiring to jump on the fact that other teams will be having this as well. Typically at the end of December you can search for contracts expiring in 6 months and get a lot of people in Europe on that list. Similarly, when the prompt shows up in August you can find the same for South American players.

Great video Z. Not sure if it's helpful on 23 because I've stayed on 22 but I've had some success adding a step prior to this of using team reports on u18s and u23s of prem and championship. Gives you a vague idea of who to target and if started after intake day means you can cover a lot of players with 1 scout and normally means I can get early offers on the premium guys (although still has a low rate of success)

Rejected youth players are even better, because they might be strong enough to play for your crappy team already and due to the massive amount of playtime, they improve so rapidly that they're still a starter two years and two promotions later.

I'm not sure if it's league based, but once I get the 30 emails that trialists join, it allows me to invite 30 more trialists so I can get up to 90 a day trialing. Just had 250+ trialists in at the same time. Made finding the free guys easy (and training useless)

Using just one default shortlist reduces the time you need to place and remove them significantly, I wouldn't be surprised if you save an hour per season. You can always filter within the shortlist for what you are actually looking for: expiring contracts, free players etc Or even better, search through "scouted players" screen (without putting almost everyone you might potentially maybe one day be interested in on a shortlist) and save even more time. Putting a guy on a shortlist, tracking in inbox what's happeing to him, removing him when he signs elsewhere times 500 or more players. It seriously adds up.

I think it could be useful to an extent for me because sometimes I'll see a player and he'll be kind of yeah, I definitely want you but I dont have a chance right now? I forget names a lot lol One thing on loans though, and I'm aware this probably sounds creepy! but is there a way to get told when a player turns 17 and thus could generally be available for loan?

@@mattjames6349 Create a note for the player. You can set up the reminder date on exactly the day he turns 17 or whenever you wish. As for shortlist, I'm not saying don't use at all. But rather not adding every single player that comes through the scouting reports, because that's actually what the scouted players window already does. And you can easily put them on the default shortlist.

@@Draddar yeah I knew about setting a note, I just wondered if there was a more efficient way but it doesn’t sound like it . I got what you were saying. I don’t think I could play it quite like Zealand does . I take a pretty laid back approach to scouting throughout the year (unless I have a crisis !), and then start ramping it up as the season ends and hopefully I have more of an idea what division I’ll be in. I kind of feel like if I get into scouting during the season too much then there’s a chance I’ll get tempted to buy someone I really didn’t need to !

im very bad about cleaning shortlists, so i have a loose one where i just remove them if i dont see a usefulness, but i use the scouted view all the time to look for players. also if you have good scouting knowledge, just plain old player search and assign to the scout for that country.

Ignore me for this because obviously everyone hopes to be in a position to sign players they actually want long term , but if you want a guy who’s just going to offer you stability but not take you to next level then offer him a non promotion release clause of zero. my favourite way of getting players who are far better than your club in the lower leagues in FM is to sign the guts from america who are 18/19 who have no contract. Works very well in the likes of Scotland as there is no 20k fee for work permits.

I wanted to add that you can actually go arround de 30 trials limit, you wait until the moment they are in the time and then you invite 20 more, and then you confirm and wait until the moment they are in the team, and you invite more.... in my pentagon challenge i've had more then 300 players in trials for 4 weeks in the youth team and evaluate them at the and of the trial... that's i've got a lot of team improving players to horrible teams.....

My issue with the 1st point, the Scouting Centre and putting these players in your shortlist is that they sometimes are from other countries. Since I want to keep "updating player information" enabled, they automatically use a lot of my scouting budget just for that if I put them into a shortlist. Should have said that I'm playing with a danish team, currently in 2nd tier.
