I believe this no matter where you are in the world it is a rare site! Hyundai was a vehicle you purchased because they were cheaper than the competitors yet in everyday driving they were competent enough. This vintage is extremely rare here in Northeast United States, but were quite common over several years ago. Always a delight to see an identical vehicle sold elsewhere in the world!

@lloydvehicleconsulting 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, these first generation Lantras/Elantras are very rare indeed now. This was one of the first Hyundais to be sold worldwide, along with the Excel/Pony/X2 (just three of the names all used for the same car). There are not many left in this country due to the familiar problems of low secondhand values and rust.

I didn't realise these were Mitsubishi based too. I can certainly see similarities between this and the Proton Persona in the dashboard too. Love the colour coded seatbelts. I know what you mean about visibility too. There's something quite nice about being able to see right to the end of the bonnet. I had a shot of an Accent some years back and I really liked that about it too.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, this is based on a larger platform than the Persona, I think, but there is a lot of shared engineering. The visibility is absolutely fantastic, although this 1.5 is a bit slow. I would certainly like to have an Accent on the channel too, probably the second generation one.

Lovely interior trim and nice and airy. The shape has not really dated. I know moderns most have various weirdly shaped headlights but apart from that this looks quite confident and distinguished. Great clutch control and lovely smooth driving technique. That Skoda Taxi was going much too quickly, probably a side effect of dual mass flywheels where the driver does not really need a smooth technique. Just slam the gears in and floor the throttle. Your technique of use the power band and make careful not rushed shifts is much more efficient, economical and gentle on the clutch and synchros. Would certainly drive this or the Nexia.

Thanks Sean! Glad you enjoyed the video. This is a second facelift first generation Lantra (if that makes sense), and so this is near the end of production. I do like the shape, it is enhanced by alloy wheels on this particular car which I do not believe were standard. I had had a bit of practice before we started filming the driving section, so not everything was as smooth as it appears. The performance was one of the downsides of the 1.5 engine, the 1.8 is faster. I had to use the power band, otherwise it just wouldn't make any progress at all. The Nexia was really good, this was a lot more spacious and comfortable, though. Mr Coleman is going to be making a video on his channel about single mass and dual mass flywheels as so many people have mentioned it in this video!

My ex wife bought a £300 Lantra auto when we split, loaned it to me when my car failed to start one morning. It had 80k on clock, you had to pump brakes to slow, drivers seat sagged so much I had to use cushion to sit on it and central locking either wasn't there or was broken. But I did think that when it was around two years old it had been a nice car. Reasonably well finished and equipped with the massive depreciation already gone. Had simply been uncared for. BTW I always make a point of letting advertising run on this and some other channels since you pointed out you get small commission. But I skipped this morning, first ad on this for me was over 6 mins long! No way am I watching ads that length. KZbin are getting bit silly putting up ads longer than some channel's content! Anyway, thank you for your usual great review.
@revivedfears

I always let ads run on small channels I enjoy too. Not sure if it makes a difference or not but I do anyway. Always turn ad block off on desktop for creators I like too. Making these vids, especially in what must be a fair bit of Joseph's spare time, is much appreciated so I try to show a little extra support.
@DavidJohnston58
@DavidJohnston58 3 жыл бұрын
@@revivedfears yeah they make little bit off KZbin and it costs money and time to make content such as this. If I were working I would go down patreon route on a few channels where the content is enjoyable but can't afford that as things are.
@revivedfears
@revivedfears 3 жыл бұрын
@@DavidJohnston58 yeah, patreon can be great when done well. Early access is okay but exclusive member only content is the only way I justify supporting creators with monthly subscriptions. But yes, the way everything is right now I certainly empathise it just isn't feasible for everyone!

Yes, you wouldn't believe how much time it takes to consistently put out videos five days a week! It probably does make a small difference, but don't worry if you have to skip the videos, it can get very annoying.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 3 жыл бұрын
As we have mentioned before, the KZbin revenue we get back at the moment is about 5-10% of what we financially put into the channel. That does not count the hours spent driving to film cars or answering comments, editing, etc. I do have a Paypal account set up to receive donations, and I have considered doing Patreon, but when I made a video about it, I got virtually no response, so I am not bringing up the subject of channel support at the moment. Two wonderful people are giving a small amount regularly now, though, and they get early video access.

Thanks Adam! That is fascinating, there is very little information out there about these cars, and they are now very rare in this country, so a real privilege to drive Stan's one. The only thing I would say is that the 1.5 is a bit slow, so I would have to upgrade to the 1.8 ideally if I owned one.

@@lloydvehicleconsulting I would agree with that but was very nice to drive at the time. My dad’s previous cars were a Morris 1100, a Morris Marina, a Cortina, a Sierra and then a Montego. The Lantra was by far a much nicer car to drive (I can vouch against the montego at least!).

Really lovely colour. I really liked these a lot when they were new, glad this one is being saved. For me, Mitsubishi were at their peak in the late 80's and 90's and those engines were tough and reliable, with a reasonable amount performance. You can understand why emerging brands like Proton and Hyundai used them. Of course with today's modern turbos and the amount of torque, I imagine these older naturally aspirated engines, do feel a little under par performance wise these days. Keep up the good work and look forward to the next video.
@lloydvehicleconsulting

Yes, the 83 bhp 1.5 engine feels quite underpowered in this car, whereas in the first generation Proton, it felt quite lively. It is easy to see from that just how much lighter those old Protons were. I would be happier with the 1.8 CD model with cruise control, but we are blessed to have this one at all due to rust, low secondhand values and almost complete lack of classic interest. Certainly very reliable engines if you look after them, and made for a very long time indeed!
