It is time for the newest instalment in that beloved cinematic automotive KZbin experience where we film practical cars that can be bought for less than £1,000 in a manner befitting of their inexpensive value! This may go horribly wrong (and frequently does)...
This time, as we test a 1992 Hyundai Lantra (J1) 1.6 GLSi Automatic, we find things that are very familiar, experience a reluctant automatic gearbox, get pursued by a powerful Mercedes, enjoy the seatbelt height adjustment and drone on about very little of any importance at all. Nothing untoward, then...

It is so nostalgic and very easy to see why Jude is keeping this one, it even has the proper wheel trims.

Yet another nice no budget review, and just the kind of car that floats my boat (having had 3 Protons and a Mitsubishi Colt over the years). If Mr Currie ever gets bored with this one...?

Goodness, I haven't seen this particular Hyundai in a very long time!

I quite like that Joseph, the 205s doors are ridiculously thin and also a car you don't want an accident in!

Nice car, loved the shape when the first came out in 1991. The didn't look as good after the face lift.

Brings me back to late 1991/92 when we had the first Hyundai dealer in our town (Hyundai was introduced to the german market at the IAA ´91). I really liked the cars (okay, the Sonata and the Pony/Excel felt quite dated) and the Lantra was my favourite. Nice design, comfy interior, i wash my dad bought one (he didn´t). Unfortunately the dealer only lasted about a year, probably because Ford intervened as Hyundai was a part of our local Ford dealer. At least i´ve got my own Hyundai today, i own an Ioniq since 2019. ;)

Certainly worth keeping. It is in excellent condition. It reminds me a lot of the white Mitsubishi Lancer GLXI automatic my mum had. That was also a 1.6 1994. So imagine used the same engine and gear box. I can see why Mr Currie wants to keep it. It has a certain charm about it.

Very nice review MR Lloyd, it's a good car and great condition. Decent spec, Even the Orion Ghia didn't even have rear electric windows.

Another Gem that Mr Currie has here, lovely Hyundai and I do remember seeing the embossed Hyundai logo in the bumper on these back in the day. Another fantastic review Sir.

I would do a complete timing and balance shaft belt with idlers, and timing tensioner, and water pump, if it were mine, they are interference engines so bent valves if left neglected, they normally get changed every 60k miles as basic service, but age likely would also reduce the service life on them, they were pretty much an korean version of a c50 series Mitsubishi lancer/mirage/colt and a lot of parts interchange between the cars.

My uncle had one with an automatic gearbox. Can't remember for definite if it was a L or M plate one, as it was a long time ago.

Some people say. . That real Car people or car lovers. Are people that loves special expensive sportcars. Like audi rs… bmw M. Or Mercedes amg… or Porsches Ferrari Lamborghini.. that kind of vehicles . And than they say about a regular car like: that and that car is for people that doesn’t like cars and just want a from a to b transport . But I don’t see it that way. You have different kind of people. Indeed the super or sport car or premium car or tuning car or classic enthousiast. But you also have the regular car lover… maybe someone that loves fiats… or someone that is into Citroens.. or someone like me… that loves this kind of 90s caes like the lantra.. or the excel from this time. Or a sierra or 626. Maybe the fast car people would say… well these are just boring from a to b cars. But not for me. In my eyes regular cars are verry cool and i find them more interesting that for example a Ferrari or a Porsche.
