Interesting to see how this has progressed. I have a '22 Elantra N, and cannot believe it came from such humble eco car roots.

I had shared 94 rental on Guam for a year in 1994-1996. We drove it everywhere including thru the jungles for work on Andersen AFB. Oil never changed. STOUT!

I had an Elantra. I think it was a 94. Cherry Black with Purple interior. Hand crank windows. I really liked that quirky little car. When I bought it - it was only 5 years old!

95 elantra was my first car 5spd no option base with the 1.8.. loved it.. equivalent to the civic and corolla boys. Wish i could find a 5spd for sale id like to finish what i started.

I have the 94 lantra with the 1.6 lt engine and the manual transmission , it generally runs good to this day almost 30 years later

@@DJAshba99 I live in greece so my lantra has manual transmission. Also it has few kms almost 130.000 (80.000 miles) The price is around what I see in lantras of about that age bein sold here , some cheaper spme more expensive depending mostrly on the kms I think. The only problem is that its a 30 year old car and parts may not be so available since its not a very common car ,for example for the first time this year the mechanic couldnt find a part so I had to search for it myself in a junkyard ( a clutch pedal). The mechanic told me I should start thinking about ditching the car for that reason , but I dont know if the same applies in the u.s.

These were attractive, comfortable and reasonably nice driving cars new, but they fell apart very quickly compared to many other competitors. Often dead by 100k miles or less.Transmission failure was a huge problem.

These early Hyundai's used Mitsubishi engines and transmissions. Once Hyundai started making their own starting in 95' reliability was improved.

This is probably part of the reason why Mitsubishi offers 10 year / 100 thousand mile warranty on their cars to this day. They aren’t doing well with their cars in the US compared to Hyundai

Things are different now than 25 yrs ago. They both make reliable cars. The 10 yr warranty is a good thing (for consumers). It's segment leading (in Canada). Since margins are so thin on new cars, warranty work costs OEs big $$. Therefore they tend to set they're warranties accordingly. Hyundai, Kia, and Mitsubishi offer the best warranties in the business, which says a lot.

Funny though that Hyundai led design of the GEMA world engine for Chrysler and Mitsubishi years later. In fact, the Mitsu 4B1 engine family still used today is based on a Hyundai design. As are some engines used by Fiat-Chrysler.

It was really weird that the Koreans would put the power window switches in the center console of their earlier cars. The Hyundai Excel, Kia Pride and Daewoo Lemans all had this feature in their top-of-the-line variants, but still had manual windows in the 2nd row.

Adjusted for inflation, $15, 545 is about $26,000 in 2021, so nearly three decades later (wow!) the Elantra is still in the same price range, arguably safer and better equipped, though ironically, I think these older ones with a Mitsubishi engine lasted longer.
