I'm not sure if Glam Rock really translated well to America, the New York Dolls maybe, but here in the UK we had a lot of it and it varied in quality. T Rex, however, were pretty consistently great and released a lot of very good records. It's easy to see aspects of Marc Bolan in the acts that followed in punk, rock and metal, he really was a big inspiration to many.
@Dreyno3 жыл бұрын
Yeah. There was Bowie, T. Rex, the Sweet, Slade, Mott the Hoople etc. Then you had pap like the Bay City Rollers and the Rubettes etc. who were just cash-ins on glam. A bit like the tail end of punk. When glam is good it’s like the ultimate blend of everything good about rock.

In order: Bang A Gong (has to be first), 20th Century Boy, Mambo Sun, Ride A White Swan, The Slider, Life's A Gas, Telegram Sam, Jeepster. Led by Marc Bolan, T.Rex was the first true glam rock band, heavily influenced Bowie leading up to and during his Ziggy Stardust days. Great songwriting, incredible voice.

Bang a Gong's correct title is 'Get it On'. Plus you missed 'Metal Guru'.

@@normandavidtidiman9918 "Bang a Gong" is the correct song title. Printed title on the album cover (and my vinyl record and CD) is "Bang a Gong (Get It On)". Paranthesis indicates main name is "Bang a Gong". Also, didn't miss "Metal Guru", love that song, but there are similar tracks already listed and didn't want to overwhelm them. But I agree, "Metal Guru" is just as deserving as the others.
@normandavidtidiman99183 жыл бұрын
@@alan73795 The original (and proper) UK title is Get it On. Marc Bolan was English,wrote the song,and presumably wanted that as it's title. From wikipedia ; "Get It On" is a song by the English glam rock group T. Rex, featured on their 1971 album Electric Warrior. Written by frontman Marc Bolan, "Get It On" was the second chart-topper for T. Rex on the UK Singles Chart. In the United States, it was retitled "Bang a Gong (Get It On)" to avoid confusion with a song of the same name by the group Chase."
@alan737953 жыл бұрын
@@normandavidtidiman9918 It really doesn't matter what it was called in the U.K. back in 1971; this young couple are listening to music in the U.S., a full half century after that song was released. In fact, when the band was first introduced to the American TV audience via the late night concert program Midnight Special back in 1973, the song was titled onscreen as "Bang a Gong (Get It On)" because that's how it was known on American radio and American records back then (as well as today). But I'm sure Brad and Lex appreciate the added context.
