Working out of Wilmington NC there doesn't seem to any rule to what color Common is here but its useally Black, Brown, or Blue. Get lots of blown fuses in the fall when homeowners change their own stats. Works fine for cooling but soon as they switch to heat it pops. Mainly talking about heat pumps that energize in "O"
@antoniosantiago27704 жыл бұрын
I noticed it at t stat. I always snap a pic and confirm takes a few seconds. Im also use to blue being common but some ppl use brown for c so a quick pic. And confirm at the end

If the home owner decided to install a new thermostat or nest they going to burn the fuse and they will call you back 🙂.

Maybe they'll take a picture of the old thermostat and copy that for the new t-stat and completely skip the manual.

Had something similar today, homeowner said she just put new batteries in the thermostat last night and it wouldn't turn on, I pop the stat off and one of the batteries is reversed 😂 got to love Honeywell stats.

That blue was super short. Sucks having to do a free service on Sunday. I’m glad you have work. I’m at home with nothing. My business is done until this is over. I’m learning a little a/c repair until then. Lol. I’ve always been able to fix my own stuff plus neighbors. The kid working for me was doing hvac school at night. I’ve been helping him study for the test but he failed his first attempt. I’m pretty sure I can pass it but at 58 I’m not really looking for a new career.

On Rheem and Ruud Heat pumps, I use brown as common since Rheem uses the Blue wire for the reversing valve to be energized in heat mode (B terminal on most t-stats). I am in a more rural part of GA where most people use a heat pump since natural gas or propane is not directly available and the winters are so mild, so seeing anything but brown as common is a bit weird to me, although I have definitely seen it before. Good troubleshooting; it is always easier to see a mistake when you aren't the one diagnosing the issue.

Another reason why love this job are the tools, that short pro is pretty nice even tho wouldn’t use it a lot and that’s a lot of my tools
@HeroCaleb4 жыл бұрын
I believe Rheem and Ruud’s standards are brown for common because blue is used for the reversing valve (b). Whereas for Nordyne, black is for common because blue is for y2. Different standards for different manufacturers

9:37 Saw your booties. Reminded me. Our company had to switch. We'd get complaints from customers about techs not wearing them. We ASSumed it was slackers. Then one day it happened to our field supervisor. It turned out, the blue booties were too close in color to our pants. We switched to bright frik'n yellow booties.

Great stuff. This is what technicians run to in the real world and It could make you go nuts, the importance of paying attention to the details mr. Ted is a wise gentleman I was completely lost. Idk if you're aware but another way to test the t-stat it self is take off the t-stat, look for the small pins on the back, put your meter on the dummy beeps and place one where R pin be and go down touching the W, Y, G pins if you hear the beep on either pin, your T-Stat is bad, you should not have continuity with any unless it receives power. Just a tip.

Its a space pen, not because it can become a full sized pen, but because you can use it in zero gravity. usually pens work only because there is gravity to pull the ink downwards so that it would come out. in space that does not work, so the pen has pressure inside it, to push the ink out of it.

I've been watching your videos hoping to find the answer to my 35 year old trane compressor not coming on. I changed my thermostat last year because my heat would constantly run and not cut off,, now my heat works fine but my ac isn't working. I put old thermostat back on and it still doesn't work. It was working before the new thermostat. Fan comes on, but outside unit blows cool air and I don't think compresdor is coming on. I replaced three capacitors (yes my heat pump ac has three) still no cool air. I'm a 60 year old female and I'm determined to get this thing up and running.

Thanks Ted. Do you guys use the housecall pro app or something similar. I paid like $120 a month it does all my invoicing so I'm on paperless tickets and I'm able to keep all my prior history and notes. If I ever decide to cancel my notes and everything I've collected over the years comes with me free of charge. We already been using it for the past year-and-a-half and I tell you what I wish I would have done that when I first started out. It also gives you a picture of the technician who's coming out which be a one-man shop will always be my mugshot. But it helps the homeowner feel comfortable with the person that's coming out and if they want to do a background check they can do that as well.

Never ever as a tech assume anything when it comes to colour coding for 24 volt, do you self a favour and carry a sharpie, and a roll of painters tape, label wire 1/2/3/4 with painters tape, write down on furnace with sharpie inside, what all wires go to, it’s like doing a fireplace maintenance, photos photos photos, where all the log set goes to😊

If it was an installer that replaced the furnace, would you have talked about bad installers for not checking the wires at the tstat?
@Wolfhound.4 жыл бұрын
looking behind the thermostat it would not make sense to cut blue to fit and not cut the others to fit so seeing as blue is super short and the rest are not im going to say at one point blue was cut off and not used and now it is with this thermostat so needing that wire now they decided to switch 2 wires and they did the scumbag thing and didnt mark that in the furnace for the next guy making you play guessing games cause your average jo will pull the wires blindly knowing where they go back on the board lol oh well easy fix
@rj.parker4 жыл бұрын
I agree. The original thermostat did not need a common so it was cut off. I might have spliced a piece of blue wire on it but the right way to do it is electronic solder and heatshrink.

I had a stat that on a handyman installed system which was wired for a heat pump and connected to a AC/Gas furnace + air handler; it kept blowing 3.5 Amp fuses, and the screw terminals on the stat were trashed. Wound up installing a harness with an in-line fuse, to prevent the handyman from doing the fix again. Is anyone seeing an uptick in install requests for duct humidifiers besides me?? Seven since Monday.

When the thermostat was calling for cooling it was also calling for fan therefore making a 24v connection between R,Y, and G
@khx734 жыл бұрын
When he jumped R to Y upstairs, the tstat would have internally closed R to G to activate the fan (it was on Auto), which was really R to C due to swapped wires. Dead short. Does that sound right, or am I missing something.
I think that tstat is the worst stat out there. I have replaced more of them than any other stat.
