No Cover is the only true original music competition show focused on changing the lives of unsigned artists. This series is about discovery, mentorship, hard reality and launching careers. No Cover is created and produced by the music business, not traditional Hollywood studios. We believe this is the show fans and musicians around the world have been waiting around for years to see and it’s finally here! NO COVER, NO MERCY!
No Cover was filmed on location at the legendary Troubadour and Sunset Marquis in West Hollywood, CA. 25 of these original artists will be competing for the top prize, which includes a six figure recording contract with Sumerian Records, representation from United Talent Agency and Shelter Music Group, performance slots at a Danny Wimmer Presents Music Festival, a $10,000 shopping spree from Guitar Center, PLUS! brand new gear from Gibson USA, Mesa Engineering, Ernie Ball, Liquid Death and Discmakers. No Cover features five main celebrity judges: Alice Cooper, Lzzy Hale, Gavin Rossdale, Bishop Briggs and Tosin Abasi. No Cover is hosted by Kellin Quinn (Sleeping With Sirens) Caity Babs (Sirius/XM) and Matt Pinfield (MTV, Vh1)

Props to Knife and Jenny writing a new song instead of forcing the other to learn one's own song, like Ada did to loveless. If she could see that loveless wasnt a guitar player, they could have written a new song. I mean they are song writers. They were meant to collaborate not put loveless as a back up artist for Ada. Ada just wanted attention and flowers everday.
@johnplaysgames3120
@johnplaysgames3120 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, Ada seems to have trouble taking feedback, working with anyone, or sharing the spotlight. That's fine if your music and sound is undeniable but people doing what she's doing are a dime a dozen on KZbin. Most of them are teenagers with ukuleles filming in their bedrooms and they all sound exactly the same. Ada clearly has musical ability but she needs to get over herself a little and learn to work with other people to develop her currently very limited (and not at all unique) sound.

They ALL needed a full band around them. At this point, these all sound like stripped-down demos and, because we haven't really seen them in any other mode, it becomes unclear whether they can actually do more than what we're hearing or if they're stuck in their little boxes. Tbh, Ada kind of dropped the ball on that one. She brought musicians after the previous feedback she got but then didn't use them at all. They sat back there, bored, laying down the sparest musical bed they could get away with while she continued sounding like one of those ukulele-plucking teens playing cutesy throwback songs in their bedroom on KZbin. If she'd allowed the band to kick up on (or after) the first hook, that song might've worked a lot better. Instead, she seems reluctant to grow out of that "twee" sound (or share the spotlight? Not sure which). But, yeah, I agree with you. I'd love to hear Knife with a full band. It would be interesting to see if he'd rise to it or be overwhelmed by it. Either way, his lyrics are great and he's definitely got the understanding of how to marry music and vibe. So far, though, the songs we've seen from him have been a little samey-samey.

I personally don’t think that Last Knife Fighter is a very strong guitarist at this point in time. His lyric writing skills are decent enough but he needs a lot more practice time spent on singing while playing the guitar or piano. He would benefit greatly by doing ear training exercises with both his voice and accompanying instrument(s). He definitely shouldn’t give up on his craft, but rather, dedicate more time to enhancing his skills. Something akin to sharpening his knife, so to speak.

@@xombiekat13 Yeah, and Ada's lane is apparently "teenager in her bedroom with a ukulele singing cutesy throwback songs." There are SO MANY of those on KZbin, do we really need what Ada's doing? Not unless she starts taking feedback and breaks out of that cutesy box. Her whole song tonight, I kept waiting for the backing musicians to kick up (like maybe on the first hook or the second verse) and fill out the sound more but, instead, they just sat back there, bored, laying down the quietest, least effective musical bed possible. It's like she took the judges' previous feedback and discovered a way to fulfill it purely on a technicality ("hey, there are musicians up here with me") but without actually fulfilling it in the spirit. Ada clearly has talent but she NEEDS someone to produce her tracks and force her out of whatever "just me!" mindset she's stuck in. One song is fine but forgettable background music. It's something you'd hear in the background of a Starbucks, not really pay attention to, and completely forget by the time the next song started. A whole album of it would be incredibly boring and, let's be honest, turned off after about two and a half songs.

He even started playing with his machine heads in frustration, then tried to come back in on the chorus he thought he knew but didn't, and he was out of tune. He was incompetent. Hell, he was playing loudly over the quiet violin because he didn't understand the song on a fundamental level. You can't work with a guy that literally can't keep up with a song that was honestly pretty predictable. I wouldn't have needed her to even finish the song before I'd have learned it because it's so predictable. Loveless was clearly completely outclassed and both of them knew it. It was written all over both of their faces. I also disagree that she was rude. How do you tell someone they're not on your level without sounding rude? She didn't even do that. It’s convinced me that I could do WHATEVER I want on stage and people that don’t get it will just assume they don’t understand, and people that do, will create their own reasons of appreciating my art, when in reality I’m just making shit up haha “I am rain”… on your face, in an interview isn’t artistic. It’s weird haha the real pro is the interviewer for continuing the interview through the awkwardness 😂

He is surely abstract art, but his songs have been for the most part true to song form. He isn’t going to far out of the box on that. I do cringe when he acts weird in an interview…but at the same time I wouldn’t want to change his process for figuring things out.

I LOVE THIS SHOW. Hopefully, 53 minute shows become more common! I wish this show the very best success! The best part of this show is how all genres are considered for the contest. A very close second is the judges' genuine, thoughtful, and constructive criticism. You all nailed it with this one! Another cool thing would be to hear the trio's perspective/thoughts on every participant(I may not agree with everything they say BUT I appreciate some of the tough questions and how honest they have been.).

Amazing show. Hope there will be many more episodes/seasons to come. Jenny killed it, listened to everyone, and absolutely her song resonated. Perhaps it’s just the love for piano, but her performance was spot on, and you could tell the song meant something to her. Her vocals were great. I’m really happy the judges put her through. It’s too bad loveless didn’t get to do another solo tune.

I feel like I expected Rock/Metal bands and that's what it was for the first 2 episodes. Then it became The Voice or AGT but with rockstars for judges. Watching this is like watching Metallica pretend to enjoy Avril Levine cover Fuel on MTV ICONS. I'm not saying that they're not talented I'm just saying it's more of the same. It would be great to see them focus on less mainstream Rock culture next season. Not just Metal/hardcore/punk but electro pop, garage, avant garde, psychedelic etc. There is a lot going on in those genres. Either that or more of the rock/metal genre need to step up and make it on to the live tapings.

Good episode but it definitely further muddled what the rules are... I was positive that Ada, The Last Knife Fighter, and Jenny March's continued participation was contingent them being ensemble acts. The Mercy Panel made it clear that it was the only reason for giving them second chances and a way to side step having to only give mercy to one act. By making two acts one. This episode showed that mercy can be given to as many people they want and the conditions of mercy mean nothing. It lowers the stakes significantly and, kind of, impacts the concept of fairness.

Really cool to hear fuller songs. I have loved the concept and challenge in bringing more impact in shorter compositions. Maybe that'll be shown and colored in the next series. I've also loved the rawness of the performances. Haven't heard a backtrack unless it was a solo singer (Jenny) but even then her voice was not over produced in live showcase. Very Cool and maybe get more production as the heat boils up and showcase those silent heroes in FOH and BOH that brighten artists performances later in those series. I love the positivity and acceptance in art forms during this whole thing. Jenny has really shined talents and come up as like an underdog in a show that seemed to gear towards bands.
@samirgolchha

I'm glad they've picked Jenny, because she really showed talent and a will to work: she made 2 songs, she was collaborative, all of her 3 performances were different both musically and the way they made me feel, her piano part was more diverse than any other accompaniment on this episode, even compared with Ada who had almost full band. Knife guy is good but I guess he's more memorable for his look and voice than his songs, maybe it's just a matter of taste. Props to him for collab as well. Ada made the same song with the same pizzicato thing, even having a bass and a guitar she couldn't make it work, at least for me. Bass was just generic and I can't remember what guitarist was playing through the song at all. Also her work on 'collab' with the other guy was just ridiculous - she didn't let him sing, couldn't help him with chords, it was clear she didn't wanna let someone else shine on the same song, overall seemed rude. At least that's how it looked through the camera and montage. Tony is just weird, I can't see any strong message that could help that performance. He can play at some bars or in front of his friends, but it's not the same, he's good, but not enough for the show. And it wasn't a filmmaking competition, so I don't know why they had to praise him so much. I get that they respect him but I think it has nothing to do with the competition.
@ryo-kai8587
@ryo-kai8587 2 жыл бұрын
Ada just wanted _her_ song. She didn't want to co-write either-I don't think she wanted to collaborate at all. She wanted an "accompanist". In other words, nothing to draw attention away from her. What she got were like overly gentle session musicians with their tails between their legs making some background texture while she played solo. Don't get me wrong, I like her voice, the pizzicato lightness and upbeat cutesy vocal style reminiscent of Regina Spektor, but that's what the first song was, too. When she pulled out the _freaking virtuoso bowed violin solo that touched my heart and soul,_ It made me wish she leaned into that. It also suddenly gave the backup musicians a clear reason to exist in that context. She's talented, but I didn't get good vibes from her outside of her music, or enough variety inside of it. At the very end we learned she's a master violinist; *I want so much more of that.*

Wow, we finally got to see some actual feedback from Gavin. Jenny March was IMO the right choice to advance to the next round, she proved to be the most versatile. While she really has a powerful voice, she needs to channel her strength, especially when she goes to a higher pitch. I'm no vocal coach, but it just seemed a bit off sometimes. The Knife Fighter is already a legend, for his lyrics, his look, and how he lives music. But I don't see him as a big stage artist that this show is looking for. Ada Pasternak.... well, she's beautiful, and she knows.... good songwriter and plays the violin like an ukulele, not much else.... I think Julian would have learned those few guitar chords within 30 minutes, so the search for a new guitarist was already a no-go for me personally, unless that song would have blown me away completely (which it didn't) Tony Kaye... apparently a big name in the business for whatever reason....

Wow. This series has been pretty hard to watch up until this episode but it's been worth it to be introduced to Ada and Jenny, I'm now subbed to both. I don't agree with A.C's comment, Jenny's song was so pure and powerful and I hate the way producers destroy powerful songs by adding more in an effort to make it bigger when the reality is the wall of sound you bring in only drowns the true drama and raw emotion on display and IMO ruins it. Jenny's performance was so pure it makes me want her to have everything she deserves in that moment.

TONY: I get Tony a little better than some of the folks in these comments and I do think he's a real-deal artist (the lyrics aren't random or "on a whim" as some suggested, they're in more of a John Lennon/poet/performance artist mode than modern music tends to be) BUT, yeah, he's just started learning to play guitar recently and his songs could REALLY use some arranging and production to shape them a little because they just sort of ramble a little too much. Honestly, I was kind of hoping the surprise he was hinting at for tonight's performance was going to be going electric and playing with a few other musicians or something. It would've been interesting to see what he would do with that because a full album of what he's done so far would be a little much. He's interesting as a person and artist (to me if not to you) but, ironically, he's a little "young" in his musical abilities. And let's be real: Who are you going to sell his music to? That sucks to say but, while musicians are artists (and should be) and music is art, the music biz is a business. If a company is going to invest money in an artist, they need to know they can make that money back. What is Tony's demographic? Boomers? He'd do better as a songwriter (with a producing partner, maybe, to help arrange) and having someone else actually performing the songs. Either that or, y'know, play art galleries and be more artist than full musician. He's got great ideas, a poet's approach to music, some nice melodies, etc. He just needs someone who's been making music for longer to help shape what he's doing into its best form. ADA: For me, Ada is the one I don't really get the love for. I mean, she clearly knows how to play music and can sing (though I find her voice a little squeaky for my taste) but she's really stuck in this little box sonically. When she brought in musicians for this performance, I kept waiting for them to kick up (and fill out) the music a little after the first verse (or, at least, after the first hook)... and, instead, it was just the same dynamic with two bored musicians behind her barely laying down a musical bed. And I agree with Gavin (which hasn't happened a lot in this show so far) that her lyrics are a little too cutesy to hold any actual weight. Tbh, you can see a million artists just like her on KZbin (most of them teenagers), plucking a ukulele or something in their bedroom and singing cutesy little throwback type songs. She has ability but what she's doing with it is boring. She needs to grow beyond the metaphorical KZbin bedroom and find a fuller sound. Also, as good as her violin playing was, it came out of nowhere for exactly one part and felt tacked on. It didn't feel like an organic part of the song. KNIFE: I love The Last Knifefighter's vibe but, yeah, through both of the performances tonight I just kept thinking, "Oh, I already see the limits here." It's always a simple, similar guitar pattern that doesn't really go anywhere while he growls in the same range each time. Also, his hooks are... Let's just say I found myself wondering more than once if a particular line was meant to be the hook because it wasn't clearly so. His lyrics are really good, don't get me wrong and he's got the beginning of a really great vibe going... he just needs to expand the boundaries of his sound. Simple, repeating guitar patterns are fine if you're Tracy Chapman and your simple guitar pattern that goes nowhere is meant to convey a sense of being stuck ("Fast Car," e.g.) but, even then, Tracy breaks out to a brighter sound for the hook in order to convey the time when she still had hope. There's a musical purpose for the simplicity, it's not just bc that's the one thing she does. JENNY: I'm glad Jenny March went through. She was the only one of these four to show some versatility, she's a good songwriter, and her arrangement was good. Even if her style isn't your cup of tea, she's good at it and her songs are well developed. I could easily hear "Rebound" on the radio right now. That being said, I think Bishop (or maybe Lzzy... can't recall) nailed it when they said, "What sets you apart from the Rihannas of the world?" I could hear a Rihanna or Sia singing "Rebound" (which I kept thinking during the performance) and what that says about Jenny's songwriting shouldn't be underestimated. But what would make me think, "Oh, here's the new Jenny March song" rather than just "Oh, that's well-written pop"? That being said, she took feedback and applied it, she's good at what she does, and I think she was the right choice to move forward. With a team around her, I think she has the most ability (and willingness) to grow into the role and become something bigger. The others are all stuck in their one thing and seem unable to break out of it. ALL FOUR: All four of these artists could use a band around them. And at least three of them would benefit from writing with someone else to add another dimension to their sound and break them out of their current limitations.
