Completely agree with you. I would not trust ANY private equity connection. The strength of SA rugby is in its grass roots, even if poor relatively speaking, to what this deal could signify. It is a psychological/emotional paradox... strength lying in the relative absence of loads of cash. These private equity deals are useless and fake incentives. The focus should be on the ball (literally) and keep these "suits"'far away from the culture.

@avrilgardiner9111Ай бұрын

@randomlyfactual1943Ай бұрын
I agree with you insofar sponsorship is preferable to selling equity shares. But there is a snag. Obviously any company from any country can sponsor any team, but usually these companies are going to be based in the countries where they support the sport (think Castle Lager, MTN, Absa, Macsteel etc) And in our country, we have this 30% BBEE requirement, which serves to scare off investors - as we saw in the Starlink saga. So let's say you are a huge company like Tesla that wants to come to SA. Tesla is not going to give up 30% of their shares to "previously disadvantaged individuals" so in order to circumvent the BBEE legislation, they will instead form a new subsidiary, which we will call Tesla South Africa - a model every other automotive manufacturer has done. The long and the short of it is this: while Tesla easily has enough money to sponsor the Boks twenty times over, Tesla SA will not have anywhere close to the same financial muscle. The result? The biggest companies in our country are either too volatile (i.e mining companies that can have their net worth plummet based on commodity prices which is why you don't often see Anglo American or Murray Roberts sponsor major sports teams) or just not big enough (think Absa compared to Bank of America or Barclays). The current sponsor of the Boks is MTN and while they are a large company, they can't match the kind of coin O2 or Altraid can spend. The result is almost laughable: England's sponsorship deals is worth than twice the SA one, despite the fact that the Boks have won 3 of the last 5 world cups.

Tim, you say it as it is, love your thinking as a Brit, and will be a very sad South African if these financial deals go thru, but our national teams, for better or worse, are worth more than any deals made..Just as a matter of historical interest, the Boks, as we call em, were all originally from the Boer war against England back in the 18 hundreds as prisoners in SA, and challenged the English wardens to the game of Rugby, a town that originated the game, hence the town's name in the UK. They named themselves " Springbokken" and went on to win that very 1st game.. After the war, the"Springbokken" went on a boat, 3 months journey to England and won 91% of their games during over a year there. Gotta love your sentiment and love of the game.. Cheers boet, with high respect 🤩

Absolutely brilliant analysis Tim, this is what happens when you let the old amateurs run a professional game. Our big unions (Lions, Bulls, Sharks, WP) all have private equity partners, proper businessmen with a passion for their union and SA Rugby, from what I understand it is them that threw a spanner in the works. They have made a proper business decision to keep control - how on earth can anyone sell the rights to their national team. The UK is properly cocking it up in their sport though, how many of the Premiership and Championship Football teams are owned by foreign investors ? Too many

Good Day Tim i don't let my option see the day of light . But this is a happy opinion. I'm so glad Dr.Rassie is directer of rugby because he knows we cant sell the last thing that is valuable in south Africa. all S.A want are to be reconiced as good competing club teems. The supper rugby union kick us out to there demise. we(Dr Rassie) decided we need a top comp to compete in ,and the urc was right for the picking. the northern teams wanted to know how the southern team played. We both learned how each anther played. The reason why we wouldn't sell the springbok is because its SA. and the urc gave our club teams the money to get the spring bucks back playing for South Africa teams. i love seeing the star stated team running out for the bulls and sharks and stormers. all big names feels like the Currie cup of the 80's/90;s. And then you have a lions team not a lot of spring bucks. But wow what a team. raw talent. Hope they have enough money no keep them for two years. Then the lions will be top of log.Rugby is our last commodity. Cant sell!!!!!!!!!! its more then money its SA FREEDOM

The attempt to stop this deal is gaining momentum. I agree, but then the people should get more involved, not just watch the Springboks on TV. In all unions these decisions start from the clubs, the clubs appoint an EXCO and elect a Chairman, The Chairman goes to the Chairmans Council Meetings at their local Union, an EXCO for the Union is appointed from the Chariman's Council, The EXCO elects a President who represents the Union on the SA Rugby Council. etc etc... more people need to get involved at club level and work their way through, Rugby needs people to help it grow off the field as much as on the field
