I'm somewhat of a beginner, so excuse me asking - but I have not yet been able to fathom, how does ILS transmit data and/or how does an aircraft recieve it? (I am however familiar to how both work for a VOR)
@stroguyАй бұрын
@ ILS in a similar manner to VOR uses AM modulation and space modulation to produce a signal which can precisely provide the aircraft with runway centerline or glide path. No message is sent to the aircraft. Similar to your car radio recovering music or voice on the AM dial, the LOC or GS provide a simple 90Hz or 150Hz audio riding the RF carrier. That recovered audio will cause the needle to swing. A balance of 90Hz and 150Hz signals will center the needle. As one audio gets larger the needle moves up, down, left or right.

@@glennroberts461 Landings in foggy conditions require indeed generally very little power adjustment compared to other landings. The reason why it's foggy is a lack of wind convection from the ground. Those flights have literally zero turbulences and therefore, little need to adjust the power settings (which on top the autopilot can do better than humans too since it has less of a tendency to undershoot/overshoot and compensate afterwards.

What really makes this work, with less pucker factor than we used to have is the HUD is combined with an infrared camera and the camera picture can also be displayed on either of the other MFDs (multi-function display). I live just off the centerline of SAN. On foggy days I get up, turn on LiveATC and FlightRadar24 and watch/listen to the coming circus. SAN has an overnight curfew, so there are no takeoffs until 0630. Freighters land anywhere from 400 hrs to 600 hrs. SAN is also a single runway airport and ILS only works for aircraft coming from the west. Likewise, because of terrain, takeoffs are only to the west which creates a massive traffic jam on foggy days. Credit to the ATCs and the pilots who have to calmly wait for takeoff clearance in the morning with all the inbound traffic.

Always neat to watch an approach in VLIFR, and the explanation of procedures below was interesting, though it would've been extra interesting to see a close up of the PFD. What was the RVR at touchdown? If the outside view was well synced, it looks like it was "almost" doable with basic ILS mins (200 and 1/2SM). IDK about the EU, but in the USA, even on a basic ILS, we can go down to 100 above TDZE if the approach light system is in sight by the DA, and if using an approved AP, FD or HUD, we can use RVR1800 (feet) at some airports. But looking at the runway, I'm thinking it was maybe RVR1000?

OK, yes, I am impressed as is everyone else. However, while this was flown as a CATIII, at 3:24 you can see he actually broke out at 200’. Could clearly see the lead in lights. This approach could have been flown as a plain vanilla CATI. Which has been done now in every IFR plane for 60 years. In my 50 year-old single engine Cessna I fly down to minimums. So, yes, much credit to the engineers of the plane and electronics and to the training of the crew. But also, viewers of the video should understand that this is what IFR planes and pilots do. I, as just a private pilot flying recreationally, not professionally, get examined to this level at every IPC (Instrument Proficiency Check) in my small plane. And yes, it is a great wonder and joy to depart into overcast, fly a 1000 miles in nothing but grey, shoot the approach, and at 200’ AGL, there is the runway I was aiming for. While GPS makes this all easier, I was trained to do all this, and still do do it all at times, without any GPS.

@@1972C182 With lovis procedures in force we prepare an autoland with no DH just to be prepared for the worst. If lights get in sight earlier, even better. Thanks for your comment!

Very impressive! Would you be okay with me featuring a part of this landing in my series Weekly Dose of Aviation? Of course you will be credited both in the video and in the description. Thanks!
