"Happy Hour" is about having to go for drinks with your boss and colleagues, even though you don't want to nor enjoy it. But you have to do it to fit in and get ahead in your job. The Housemartins had leftist views and most of their songs deal with social issues and class system in the UK.

The Housemartins are one of the greatest and most underrated bands from the 80's. Yes, there was more to the song than meets the eye. They had so many other great songs (Flag Day, Build, Sheep, Me and the Farmer, Caravan of Love, Five Get Over Excited). Paul Heaton is a magnificent songwriter and lyricist, and he went on have more success with The Beautiful South (Song for Whoever, You Keep it all in), and he is still touring with Jacqui Abbott (You and Me were meant to be together, A Good Day is Hard to Find), and recently Paul did a beautiful video tribute to front line workers to the song Think For a Minute

The, I’m just a Girl, song actually meant something a bit different. Remember that this was the early 90s. She isn’t talking about feminism at all. Lots of people believe this. In American culture, as I believe as in most countries; she felt that her being a girl in the social she lived in, kept her from being her. Due to her gender, she was protected and babied. She wasn’t allowed to go out late, express herself vocally, or do the things boys did. Society in the attempt to protect her from the scary world, because she was a “ weak girl “, actually was prohibiting her from being herself. She was a tomboy, and that was a very new concept society hadn’t understood about girls yet. She was complaining that society’s bias to her gender of over expression, was holding her back. She used humor because she knew she needed to ease into this concept and discussion very carful- because of the bias of this ideology: boys must be tough and rowdy, while girls stay quiet, protected, and sweet!

@Paul S What you are describing is feminism. The reasons given by most societies who have limited rights of women is for their own protection, and that they are naive/low IQ. Naïveté is usually a consequence of overprotection. Feminism started as a response to all this

I'm an American who grew up in Los Angeles next to where Gwen is from. Society didn't and hasn't prevented adult women from doing absolutely anything whatsoever after the feminist movement in the mid 1960's. She was born in 69 after that movement. So that claim is completely bogus since she legally had free will to choose to do whatever she wanted. This song is either written from the perspective of a teenage girl being annoyed from what she feels are overprotective parents or a women in a relationship she feels she is being controlled by her boyfriend. As well her feeling uncomfortable with the excessive attention from men. The lyrics could still be written in 2022. "don't let me out of your sight ", I'm just a girl, all pretty and petite , so don't let me have any rights", "So many reasons for me to run and hide" "I'm just a girl, I'd rather not be " "Cause they won't let me drive late at night", they all sit and stare with their eyes", "I'm just a girl, living in captivity", "Your rule of thumb makes me worrisome", "I've become is so burdensome".
