Doing the right thing? This is false honor but ego and irrational thinking. He knows he stood zero chance and he knows if he dies, Troy would fall and every baby and woman and innocent would be killed. Knowing that consequences, he still decided to fight. @@Maimounosthe war up to this point had been a Trojan series of successes when Achilles and his myrmidons stopped taking the field. Patroclus dying had the potential to change it, because Achilles was the only Greek favored by the gods and as far as anyone knew, totally invulnerable. She was under their protection as a guest and she would have been killed had she gone back. The laws of hospitality were extremely important to most cultures in those days. Kings and entire civilizations in myth were destroyed for violating the laws of hospitality. A guest is under your absolute protection while under your roof. But yes the city would have been spared so long as they also submitted to be the subjects of Agamemnon. (At least in the film version. I don't remember that in the written version)

I never understood this scene TBH. Achille had poor judgment and foresight bringing Patroclus along. He knew how hungry to fight and become a Myrmidon Patroclus was. So he trains his cousin how to fight like him, leaves his armor unguarded and easy to find and has a similar build to Achilles. Gets his armor, leads a fight, and even moves how Achilles does. Dies, and though I get the shock of losing someone. Then Achilles wants to be mad at Hector for mercy killing a guy with his throat cut like he was going to survive. It just made no sense to me.
