I'm wondering how the shaft on the other axle looks.. torque on both of them should always be equal.. maybe it's got a bit of a twist to it too and hasn't let go yet or the one that broke wasn't tempered properly?

That stub shaft being twisted that bad would in my book warrant an inspection of the other side it could have been stressed as well.. great job Warren..
@davidholder32073 жыл бұрын
Agree Doug. You could see the amount of torque that had cracked the shaft from the twist in the spline when Warren removed it. Such a short axle would need a huge amount of torque to twist and break so that suggests metal fatigue. You'd hope John Deere will take the broken shaft and examine it to establish a reason for the failure, and supply a replacement free!
@mfreund154483 жыл бұрын
@@davidholder3207 The 8200 was made from 1995 to 1999. Tractor is at least 22 years old. How long should Deere be responsible for shafts!?!?! To me he has gotten good life out of that. Try to get warranty on a 22 yo car or truck cv shaft.
@davidholder32073 жыл бұрын
@@mfreund15448 As a manufacturer I'd be interested to know why that large steel shaft broke, after 22 years or not.

@@davidholder3207 You'd be broke, too. Those 8000 series tractors are pretty much bullet proof. They eventually break down. In the grand scheme of things, this is a small potatoes break down.

Saw this a few times (on 580 backhoes) when I was a Case tech, people would leave the transfer case engaged on pavement and turning the steering to the lock, it would take a while to happen but rental equipment will always find those people that can ruin a ball bearing with a rubber hammer. As just an observation, I was looking around your shop during various frames when it dawned on me just how much you have invested in your operation, your trucks, tools and support equipment dollar wise is a bit staggering, all mechanics of course share an investment in themselves but I just was overwhelmed by just how much you have invested, let alone your seeming endless energy and ambition to do the job right.
