This was the episode that gave me the realization that this show wasn't just a comedic Star Trek, it has actual depth, and deals with real moral decisions, and the morality doesn't always win out.

This is something I love about Sci-fi and Fantasy as a genre it can take a real world issue and twist it just enough to make get people out of their dug in beliefs and to re-consider their foundations for those beliefs. It forces people with unexamined beliefs to examine them as they haven't been fed an easy answer on the issue like many real life issues.

This is where The Orville truly begins to showcase its brilliance. The series excels at framing deeply human issues within the context of alien cultures and scenarios, creating a lens that allows viewers to examine these topics with greater objectivity. By stepping away from the direct and familiar, the show fosters a dispassionate yet insightful discussion of themes that might otherwise trigger knee-jerk reactions or entrenched biases. This approach is a hallmark of effective satire, which isn’t necessarily about eliciting laughs but about provoking meaningful thought. Through its clever use of allegory and context, The Orville carries on the tradition of great satirical works by encouraging audiences to question their own beliefs and assumptions without feeling personally attacked. The brilliance lies not just in what the show presents, but in how it invites viewers to engage with it on a deeper level.

There is another episode later (not spoiler and not related with this one) that should have won an award if the series was not a little too much comedic. Orville has a lot of serious topics and they do not choose the easy path of making things the "correct" way, this show is extremely smart, intelligent end complex.

@exileduniverse The truth hurt? Does the child have a say of the mutilation? :)

This is where the show finds its proper stride. where Seth and others arent trying to sell a Star Trek parody anymore. The Fox execs, familiar with family guy and American Dad, already greenlit the show based off the first 2 episodes. At this point Seth was more free to take a risk and showcase an actual homage to the tng era of trek. he did risk the show getting cancelled, but in his own words, "fox has a bad history with sci-fi, so i had nothing to lose" Have fun going forward!

There is a relevant case of this wirh humans. Sometimes people are born intersex, there are lots of variations of this, but the one that matters is where the genitals are not well defined or a bit of both. What is often done is gender assignment surgery where they essentially do a sex change kind of operation to make them conform to the gender they decided was better for them. Often these people grow up not feeling that way and they've been permanently altered before they could choose. Circumcision is a more common case i suppose, not exactly 1:1, but it's a major alteration of their sex organ and how it works drastically changes. It's also extremely variable based on who did it and how much they remove and which parts of the foreskin they remove (inner/outer). And the child has zero choice and it's irreversible.

In a way, the comedy makes this show feel even more real than Star Trek because real people are often silly and often find themselves in humorous situations.

Love your reactions ,but yall would be happier forgetting about Galaxy quest and understand Star Trek before 09 and Galaxy Quest is a step down. You want to understand The Orville watch Star Trek the Next Generation
