So basically Chouji felt depressed and unfulfilled. He fell in love with the idea that being the strongest would fill up that hole in his life and make him feel fulfilled. When it didn't he lashed out at his gangmembers because he was jealous at how happy they looked and Togame, not wanting Chouji to be hated, enabled him and kept his distance from him when he should've confronted him. What Chouji didn't realize is that he was already happy just being with everyone, he just got too caught up thinking he'd be happy someday if only he did this or that.

@@f.p1758He got caught up in chasing what ifs because he forgot what really matters to him and what he wants. Believe it or not. Was mentioned in the manga that (can’t remember how to spell it so won’t try) Choji’s group aren’t a school. It’s an actual gang made of young adults and teenagers. Hence their hideout being an abandoned building. So the majority of them don’t go to school. We know that Sako, Togame and Choji are all still teenagers though.

My personal take is that choji subconsciously knew that seeing others have fun made him happy, but due to him equating power and freedom to fun he began to put the blame on top of others that are weak, and are thus preventing him from having fun. It wasnt that he genuinely wanted everyone to be strong, but rather he wanted every to be strong so he could see them having fun again not knowing the problem was himself

Choji was so obsessed with freedom that he tried to push others away. So Togame decided to help. If Togame hadn't done that, Chouji might have been able to keep in touch with his friends. Togame was worried about that. And Chouji was left alone. Humans are not creatures that can survive alone. We need the presence of others in order to get a bird's-eye view of our own values. Chouji took the wrong path without realizing his mistake. And Togame helped with that. The others who pointed out the mistake were Sakura and Umemiya. Thanks to them, Choji and Togame were able to realize their mistake. Sorry for the long post.

The problem is that he is a child with a flawed understanding of what freedom is. He thought it's something tangible that he can reach. So he treats it like a game, like a prize he can win. If he got strong enough he'd be able to win it. Then when he does reach what he thought is the finish line (when he became the leader of shishitoren) there's nothing there, no prize, no treasure, nothing. So he thought maybe he wins it the wrong way, that maybe the requirement to win it is that everyone else had to be just as strong as him so he blames everyone else. But the thing is, what he desperately tried to "win" is something he already has. He was quite literally reaching for nothing because he already has it

Wow I was blown away by how emotional this episode was! I actually really liked how they decided to forgo a big climatic fight and gave us a complex psychological journey for Choji. In terms of MY thoughts on Choji's cause for growing upset and apathetic, I believe it's simply centered on the journey meaning more than the ends. In this case, Choji did the opposite initially. While he later realized his true joy came from the friends and small moments he loved (petting cat, hanging with Togame), he initially was primarily focused on the end goal of becoming leader. Thus, when he realized there was no shining moment when he became leader (empty chest) he felt lost and aimless because he had no goal anymore. His goal was hollow. Therefore, he BLAMED his friends for being weak and for allowing him to feel this way. When in fact, and this is what he later recalls with Togame when he apologies, it was the journey with his friends and their moments together that was the real treasure all along. I havent read the manga but i think this is a great conclusion to the first arc of the show in order to parallel Sakura's goal of wantin to be #1 in Furin. But I think Sakura is already starting to understand just how impactful the friends (and enemies in Togame) will be to his lifes journey rather than just being the "strongest". That was a long post but ive really come to love this show and your reactions! Thanks ❤.

I understand why you felt you needed to hear a better reason or have them explain it more. But considering that they are still children and that mental health and how we respond to things we're struggling with aren't exactly logical in the first place, it still makes sense. Most children don't have the proper coping mechanisms to deal with things "appropriately" and when you're young, everything bad happening often times feels heavier than how an adult would experience it. When I look back on my teeange years I'm always like "I was SO dramatic back then", but that's exactly how it felt back then, like the world is ending. Choji tried to fill a hole that was created by false expectations, fell into depression after being unable to achieve those unachievable goals and instead of helping him, Togame enabled him (I'm NOT blaming him, he did what he thought was right). He felt empty and alone and got frustrated because he didn't know how to fix it, so he lashed out at everyone because he didn't know how to properly process it. He just kept digging a deeper hole that he couldn't get out of on his own. No one, before Ume, forced him to face what the actual problem was: That he had to find the fault in himself instead of blaming everyone else. He had to accept that if you're not grateful for what you already have and only focus on getting more, you are at risk of losing what you have in the blind pursuit of something more. The path to the goal is usually more important than the goal itself because the goal doesn't really mean anything without the path you walked to get there.

Thing is, it's a classic case of finally reaching the big goal you were always aspiring for, worked supar hard for, you dreamed of day & night and then you reach the goal FINALLY and realise Oh...It's not all that you thought it would be. All that expectations you had, all the idea you had about is false. Choji, to put it in simple terms, got depressed & lashed out. He couldn't see or hear anything past that disappointment & crushing feeling he felt at that point. He was having an internal breakdown. He mistakenly thought maybe his goal was the one at fault, maybe striving for more would solve the issue, the hollowness he was feeling. He was shouldering all that on his own without sharing with anyone. And unfortunately Togame added to it a little bit, although it wasn't his intention at all. Togame here wanted to protect Choji but in his efforts, he isolated Choji further. That's the thing Togame realised and apologized for. Ofc Choji caused this whole ordeal in the first place but If when Choji lashed out, Togame confronted him or talked to him or let the others also confront him instead of taking on this new role of "skinning", though we can't be sure, there's a possibility, something could've gotten through to him. There would be arguments, fights but things might've been resolved much earlier. And it also seemed like Choji shut out everything after that and detached himself because of everything that was going inside him. That was the only way he could be sane (as sane as he could be that is) This is the first time after all that, someone confronted him, talked to him and tried to make him see things clearly. Everything that was weighing him down & suffocating him got out. That was what he needed the most. Ofc in real life, things wouldn't just be fixed in one conversation probably but it's the first step towards recovery. That's how i understood it. And ofc whatever the reason, it doesn't excuse Choji's action, nor Togame's actions.

it really feels like choji became depressed, hollow, and angry after getting to the top of shishitoren and nothing really changed dramatically for him. it was like he stagnated and became fixated on finding "freedom in being strong" to such an unhealthy degree that it changed the entire team too. togame as his friend didnt push forward and try to talk some sense into him or at least be someone that will listen to what choji is feeling. instead, togame enabled his behavior, hoping that eventually choji will be happy again without actually doing anything about the problem or even understood what was going on with choji mentally. tbh no one in shishitoren tried to help choji and it left him feeling more isolated. even during the fight we see moments of choji's inner thoughts where hes alone in the darkness, he doesnt understand whats going on, and because he doesnt know or understand, he chooses to ignore it.

To put it in the most cliche words possible, Choji needed to realize that "the real treasure was the friends we made along the way." Or as the saying goes: "It's about the journey and not the destination." Others have explained it beautifully in the comments. Choji was chasing after his goal, but the thing with chasing goals is: once you reach that goal...that's it. That's the end. Congratulations: you completed it! Now what? Where else is there to go from here? Choji was always chasing after an ideal, not realizing what he himself truly values. It isn't the goal itself that makes him happy-- or even the effort of picking and striving for goals -- it's the people around him and the little moments that bring him happiness. He felt empty because the great big finale wasn't as fulfilling as he made it out to be in his head. And as he himself explains in the episode, he turns that confusion into blaming others. ("It's because you guys are weak that I don't feel satisfied being at the top.") It's as Umemiya put it: "you don't even know yourself." What made Choji shine brightly all along - what made him HAPPY - wasn't the pursuit of being the top, but the comradery he had with his friends. Him realizing that for himself was what this was about.
@zeldaindisguise
@zeldaindisguise Ай бұрын
As an aside, I'm not sure if you've read Moby Dick (it's required reading in some schools/classes), but that's a really famous example for this same theme, and one that immediately comes to mind for me. "The pursuit of happiness." "Journey vs. destination." At its core, it's about someone chasing after a goal for their entire life, even to the point of obsession, but achieving it doesn't bring them happiness. It's a bit more complicated (for the protagonist, achieving his goal of killing the white whale also means killing the one thing he lived for), but the baseline moral of that story is the same. "Enjoy the journey too; don't make it all about the destination." Happiness isn't something to be chased.

Choji is someone Sakura could be if he got to the top and didn’t get the satisfaction he wanted and wanted more. To me, Choji is a parallel to Sakura. Both of them are exceptional fighters and acrobatic. Choji is at the top and is unhappy, but on the surface, he is carefree and lively. But he is hiding the fact that he feels unfulfilled in life. He has hit a rut. Sakura on the other hand is trying to get to the top and just like Choji believes that being at the top and being the strongest will give him happiness. however, he shows an inkling of happiness when he is with the bofurin. On the surface, Sakura doesn’t want friends, but slowly accepts being around them. Choji forgets the one that made him happy is what Sakura is experiencing for the first time: camaraderie and brotherhood Ume didn’t fight Choji like another punk on the street, he treat ed him like a little brother that needed a scolding and roughing up.

But he became so fixated on his goal of becoming the leader he forgot what was actually fun for him. Once he became the leader and it wasnt how he expected like he says he suddenly had no goal so he felt scared and empty. Then togame messed up because instead of confronting him he enabled him to stay angry and confused and by trying to protect choji he left him alone. Basically choji was in a depression after his goal not being what he imagined and because his best friend wanted to preserve the image he had of him he was alone trying to figure out where to go and it resulted in him lashing out and blaming others because he didnt have an answer himself

I mean, the human mind is one of the most complex things there are. It's not possible to say why someone does what it does always. Why people kill themselves? Why people kill people? Sometimes "it makes sense" sometimes is just "this guy is crazy". Chouji here had an objective , he reached that objective and felt nothing. Depressed. His mind logic was clearly wrong and Umemiya and the guys showed him. But that what he thought was logical. He was in deep shit sure. But it's not logical to make mental problems fit to OUR logic.

I know they failed to visualise chouji problem. However I can make you understand the point by comparing parallel between a different character. you know gojo? in his verse he is strongest and geto was with him as strong as him when geto left gojo and eventually died, gojo said he is now all alone. even though he have his students, friends, including shoko and his teacher. if not for geto, who told him to not turn evil, gojo would've become evil. chouji was left alone being the strongest when he become leader, he thought if he become leader he would have more fun than being with his friends. but when he became leader, he realised its not something big, like he will becomes freer than anyone else, it was something normal, like nothing actually happened, you'll still go out with your friends and do the same thing you do to have fun chouji expectations made him go crazy, he forget that he had his friends with whom he had fun. he made up a thought after going crazy that if everyone becomes strong as leader, like everyone becomes a leader then probably he can had fun however, his thoughts doesn't made sense because he had gone crazy ume made him understand his feelings which his friends couldn't do because togame didn't let chouji be around them anymore as he had gone crazy togame became the bad guy to do what chouji would actually to his gang. meanwhile chouji doesn't get involved in any violence and he stays the good guy. even if goes for fight, togame managed to hide chouji feelings infront of their gang THIS IS THE BEST EXPLANATION THERE IS. AS FOR ME.

Has anyone ever told you about the expression, "Lonely at the top?" That, combined with his jelousy, greed, and a sense of unfulfilled desire drove him into frustration and self-despair - and brought it unto his own teammates. Sad, really. But at least he's gonna be ok now. I hope.... P.S. - If you checked the end credits, both Choji and his sub-captain are right in there, too.

To my understanding, it was a combination of unrealistic expectations and a heavy responsibility. Chouji falsely assumed that fun (hapiness) comes with strength and anticipated that becoming the leader (i.e., the strongest) would ultimately bring him bliss. It didn't. He then convinced himself that the reason behind his shattered expectations was his team being weak, since they're an extension of him. The rest is history. Essentially, he's still immature and childish, definitely not cut out to be a leader yet. I'm glad he got schooled and learned what reality looks like, and what fun truly is.

Choji was in the pursuit of fun, not realizing that fun isn't a destination, it is only a feeling. So when Choji reached the destination where he thought the most fun was at and found nothing there except responsibility, he was disappointed and completely lost himself. Togame didn't want Choji to become hated, as he was the leader that all of the guys looked up to, so Togame enabled Choji's ideals...which destroyed the friendship around Choji, replacing it with nothing but a hierarchy, and that was lonely to Choji because nobody was genuinely smiling with him anymore...further exacerbating the problem.

But im worried itll be sad story, and then overcoming the enemy. Makes it predictable. Almost makes me worry that the minute there isnt a sad story, that means the character we root for will definitely lose which again would make it predictable.

not all of them... keep in mind though, as established in ep 4, major fights in this show are conversations. they can be conversations with the enemy, or conversations that make the character realize something about the enemy or about themselves. rarely is it just who hits harder, so it's not gonna be a mindless action show. slight manga spoilers: i think so far in the manga there's like, 1 other enemy with a sad story, but the other enemies are either jerks or messed up mentally (and not like choji who felt lost and was a good guy before the breakdown, but like, messed up from the very start and idk if it's possible to redeem them or if the mangaka would even try)

@@dchen8874 That's fine and all but it even though it doesn't matter who hits harder, tactics especially in a hand to hand fight does and makes for interesting fight. Conversations are nice and all, but Sakura got out of his fight through dumbass luck through the sob story which annoyed me. And even when it seemed both fighters were going all out, the last clash seemed like his opponent just gave up

@@UnifiedEntity um togame did give up in that last clash lol. the point of it was that he didnt want shishitoren to get this win because he thinks they were in a fight with no justice - they were in the wrong in the first place. but sakura's words made togame want to give him a proper fight first and have fun before he choses to give up and work on becoming a better person, so that the next fight he's in, he could be in the right.

@@dchen8874 Thats great and all, but it takes away from Sakura because he wants to be the top guy, Im rooting for Sakura, i dig his goal and his character, and I like conclusive fights. So again, one time, fine, but anime has a tendency to repeat its battle formula for the worse. Tokyo Revengers.....hoooh lord did it repeat its formula for Takubitchis fights with no progress or change, and i pray this wont fall into the same trend

@@UnifiedEntity so being top guy was Sakura's goal in ep 1 of the show. Sakura thinks that being the top guy means being physically the strongest, but he will learn throughout the story (starting from the Shishitoren arc) that just being physically strong doesn't mean you're a good top guy/leader. example: he saw that Togame is very strong but lame with what he was doing. And the choji vs Ume fight is another showcase of what's a good leader (Ume >>). so yes, I'd say Sakura does work toward becoming the top guy, but his route towards that goal includes understanding what it really means to be top rather than just fighting strong guys and getting physically strong. the manga is still ongoing and it's not like tokyo revengers, but that could be a plus or a minus depending on what you drew you to TR. WB is full of teens, more wholesome (because major characters are mentally stable and accepting), and no time travel, so there's not as big of a threat as TR where people were dying left and right and Takemichi could do nothing. Takemichi's goal was to save specific people, while Sakura's goal is to become a worthy top guy so it's totally different.

Choji was acting like a immature spoil and greedy brat, i mean he is just a teen who lost tracked of what was important, but its ok cuz he is young and now learned his lesson thanks to our Gojo 😊

Gonna be real, without Togame I don't understand Choji in the slightest. My take on it is that he had a very childish view of strength equaling more "fun" and "freedom" so when he became super strong and nothing happened he felt like it was for nothing. That in turn made him feel empty and he lashed out at everyone else for being too weak to challenge him, hence the "only the strong can stay" thing that happened. Instead of finding a reason to use that strength, your suggestion of training the other members would've been a good use for it, he kept chasing stuff that he used to find fun. Why he turned into a demented gremlin that assaults his ONLY real friend for losing?? idk. Great video and hope you have a good day^^
