Hi Steve, I am a retired HVAC-R oil & gas burner service mechanic, pneumatic controls, centrifugal chillers service mechanic after 47 years. I have been retired for 8 years. I enjoy your videos very much. Brings back the good old days. In watching the videos I was curious why you don't use the rotation tester and A C indicator, that you use on solenoid valves to see if there are energized, to check if the grundfos or taco circulators are running. Just hold it to the center back of the motor and it will rotate in the same direction as the motor. Keep up the good videos.

Be careful guys. I just tried this easy method of installing this pump and it failed miserably. It leaked like hell. He does warn us about this possibility. As it turns out the newer pump housings are machined for an Oring, but the old housing is machined for a quad ring, and the supplied new Oring does not fit the old quad ring grove properly. Close but no cigar. Tried several times to use new Oring, and the old quad ring but all attempts leaked. Bit the bullet and reassembled the new pump back to the new pump housing, and took out the complete old unit, put in the complete new unit and everything was just perfect.. No leaks and fired up perfect. This is a fast easy method if both the old and new pumps are close in age where it is likely there are no design changes.

Great video steven lavimoniere I was at a job yesterday to change a pump and tried that trick. The homeowner was watching and he made me change the whole assembly lol. "Better to change everything " he said, " this way it's all new and I won't have any problems"
@stevenlavimoniere9 жыл бұрын
JP Raimundo well the housing and gaskets on the older pump were fine .if they were iffy i would have changed out the whole pump.
@jpraimundo41009 жыл бұрын
Same thing here. The pump burned during a power spike ( electrician that wired the thing didn´t put the right breaker) after a power outage. The housing and gaskets were perfect. The customer just didn´t want the old one.

Thanks for the video Steve! My supply house told me a quiet pump was still working, but it turns out it was performing on its last legs. Signs I should have paid more attention to that easily showed my simple one zone system had a bad circulator pump: radiators one branch were really warm, while others on other branch were very cold, I had about a 50/50 split, interesting not upper units vs lower, just one branch vs the other branch-within that one branch the 2nd floor radiators were much hotter, that I could not shut valves at the unit and control the heat (heat was coming through return also, and more recently my boiler was rapidly cycling on before shutting off at the upper temperature limit and the pressure kept climbing way up and the release valve was whistling like a barber shop quartet during firing, then both temp and pressure would fall rapidly. Thanks for the help, was a really easy fix, no need to change housing out either good pointer there. I was quoted $815 to do the work, but given I had the tools and knowledge of how to hook up and restart a system it was a matter of the pumps cost and my time. Keep posting!

Hold on there paying for a pump replacement, which means installing new Flanders gaskets as well. So now if it leaks from the flange gasket , it's another that could have taken care of at this job. That's kind of messed up brother, just cause You want to save time ...this is a job I have to say , you should have done the right thing and swapped out the whole unit that was paid for ..I wouldn't let you get away with that...! I enjoy your videos but when your wrong your wrong..
@timbradley88907 ай бұрын
Plus, the right way is probably faster than this. Why go through all that trouble when you can just swap out the whole thing? No way this is faster than changing the flanges. Plus, you probably void any warranty by swapping new into old. It's going to fail again soon. Why eat the cost?

I HAD four Bell & Gossett(?) circulators. I was away hunting when the wife called to say the heat wasn't working. I said call "the" plumber and she called "A" plumber. Well when I got back and reviewed the bill the jerk had replaced all four circulators to Tacos and charged me $380 EACH!! He also replaced the 4 zone control thingy with a Taco as well and charged me $400 for that. He billed me for two guys for 8 hours ($150.00 X 8). I also got 2 check valves changed out which were the only ones he could get to easily. I went on line with Cheapo Depot and his cost for the circulators was $100.00 each as was the zone control. They left all the trash behind but took the old copper heavy circulators with them. The bill was just over $3500.00. I suggested he had a better chance of seeing God if he thought I was going to pay him a nickel. I figured he deserved nothing for trying to screw me over as badly as he did. Is a 400% markup on a $100.00 item considered gouging. My usual guy said he thought I got screwed without getting kissed first. What do you think?

I have three heating zones, and one pump needs replacing. All of the circulating pumps are installed above the level of the boiler. Is it necessary to drain the entire system, or can I just isolate the affected zone, drain only that zone and purge only that zone after replacing the pump?

The old pump looked beat up. Why not replace the whole pump? the old O rings between the inlet and outlet of the pump might be in bad shape. It is a good time to change the whole pump since you are draining the system. These are the corner cutting that contractors do.

Your pipes are hot because your 2nd floor return is near the 1st floor return. Steel is a good conductor. I have the same problem as you. Sure you fixed it now but I bet it was the taco recirculator pump like the one he's replacing in the video.

I have now power to the Honeywell Aqua Stat and then power stops at that point. The emergency on/off switch being 60 years old was shot and arc's. The Taco C-P is not picking up current, as when listening, there is a Hum while on standby. What ever happened this Repco broke down i in series of 3's. 1st the on/off switch. 2nd the Thermo-coupler and 3rd the C-P. I will have tackle the CP on my own was i trouble shot the other two. And now as i see these new Taco's C-P's, they are with out a Capacitor as the old C-P's have being 27 years old.

FYI, if one radiator is not working and you let the room out and they decided no to pay rent, check the on/off valve even if you think the valve is frozen.
