I suppose there's also Kiryu's substory with Tatsuya, which is only unlocked when you finish all the Tatsuya sidequests. I think Nico's done all the restaurants but is missing one "new dish reveal" cutscene.

I’m so proud of Daigo, in spite of everything. He’s grown so much from that little punk he was in the 80’s, let alone from his 2006 troubled phase. They really needed to work miracles to make up for the way he’s treated in 4 and I’d say they more than did their due diligence

And here we have the mastermind of all these events, Tsubasa Kurosawa, the Omi Alliance Chairman, who all this time has been posing as the in-hindsight incredibly suspicious detective Serizawa. I honestly love this twist but before I get into why, I want to defend the scene leading up to it, aka “let’s fight to lure out the mastermind” because a lot of people REALLY do not like this scene. The big problem people have with this scene is that playing along with Kurosawa’s scheme is, in the end, exactly what he wants. Even if they know someone else is trying to get you to kill each other, what difference does that knowledge make if you’re just going to do it anyway? Well, I see it like this. Katsuya seems to know who is behind everything already (or at least has a very strong suspicion of them), and as such knows he wouldn’t show himself unless things were going to plan. Since he probably knew Kurosawa as a very cautious person, he probably thought playing along was the safest bet. And furthermore, as he himself says, even logic aside, he wants to fight these Yakuza legends. And the same goes for the rest of these meatheads, especially Kiryu. Sure, there’s definitely things they didn’t think through, and Kiryu’s and Saejima’s insistence that they absolutely have to kill each other is kinda dumb, but other than that, I see it as flawed but also very badass (and kinda funny) setup. Now for Kurosawa himself. He’s basically the total opposite of Kiryu and Saejima, the worst kind of cutthroat yakuza. To him, honor and ideals are pointless qualities for a yakuza, which is why he believes any who flock to men like these four are too weak and/or stupid to cut it in this business. Throughout the whole game, he’s been gaslighting and manipulating the protagonists to do exactly what he wants, and it all comes to a head here, at his unmasking. That’s really all I can say about him for now, but I think he’s a big breath of fresh air compared to other scheming villains we’ve had in the series thus far. And a big part of that is the twist with him. Sure, the scene where he kills Fujita pretty much gives away it’s the detective guy, but why the Omi sigil? And it’s not until this reveal where it all falls into place. How could the mastermind control the police and the Ministry of Justice so effortlessly? Because he’s the leader of one of the biggest yakuza factions. There’s a bunch of foreshadowing to this twist if you look hard enough, but I think my favorite tidbit is when Akiyama mentions that the Kuroha Family is where the current Omi chairman rose up the ranks from. It’s a very ‘blink and you’ll miss it’ moment, but if you’re able to connect the dots then and there, you might be able to tell that the Omi chairman may be more involved with this than it seems. Also, as Kurosawa talks to Daigo here, it’s confirmed that he was in fact the real mastermind behind the Nagoya Family as well, and it’s implied that scheme is what helped him to rise up the ranks all the way to Omi chairmanship. Also, can we talk about how many Ws Daigo has gotten in this game? He was able to see through Kurosawa’s facade almost immediately, he escaped from Aoyama’s and Morinaga’s schemes and even made a covert deal with Madarame to stop a war from happening, he pulled Shinada out of poverty and helped him find out the truth of his scandal, and here he saves Kiryu and Saejima and delivers a verbal beatdown on Kurosawa. Sure, he gets shot by Kanai, but I don’t think that completely undermines how much he accomplished in the game thus far. Despite everything, he’s truly come far from the punk he was in Yakuza 2.

So Kurosawa it's kinda like: "I'm smarter than the average bear", but instead of bear, it's "generic thug dude"... right? Also, good call about the Kuroha family (don't know where Akiyama came up with the info), because previously I couldn't understand the connection of Shinada and the whole story, but yes, very "blink and miss it" moment

One extra thing worth mentioning is that the revelation that Serizawa was Kurosawa all along opens up a bit of a problem. Why didn't the florist bring up that he was chatting to the Omi chairman? It'd be strange for him to not know what he looks like after all. The florist's last appearance (as of now anyway) makes him look incredibly stupid by accident. I'm not gonna claim this was why he was removed, that'd be silly obviously, but it's a example of how easily the florist could solve mysteries. But well.... With several protags in 4 and 5 not knowing him, along with 0 coming after this game, you can oddly say that they had already been creating stories without him. That being said, his absence is still incredibly strange, there's mysteries in future entries he could have easily solved if present, and rather than mention his absence, which could serve a purpose, no one thinkss to say hi to him. It's very off.
@PersephoneAzem
@PersephoneAzem Ай бұрын
but why would the Florist know what the head of the Omi looks like though? He knows everything about Kamurocho, but he has no eyes on Sotembori, where the Omi is based so I dont really see a problem in that aspect

So, we have finally unveiled Kurosawa! Firstly, a neat bit of foreshadowing in part 1. We hear about the Omi chairmen being terminally ill. With lung cancer to be specific. Shortly after, we see him for the first time, cigarettes lining the floor under him. And more notably, Kurosawa also contributes to the second major theme of this game, identity. Most characters, Kiryu and Haruka especially grapple with it while he just weaponises a assumed one, quite the contrast. Kurosawa's hatred of "Yakuza" like Watase and the other 3 is also quite interesting. He's almost a more "realistic" Yakuza, one who uses cold hard logic rather than warm, passionate emotion. That aside, this whole plan is unsurprisingly a bit contentious because of how absurd it is. However Kurosawa does perhaps play into it as he's the exact character who would predict this plan and despise it.

The Crane being Katsuya's tattoo is a great choice for the character. It's been used as a symbol of carrying souls to heaven. Katsuya is making sure Park's, his friend's dream is brought to reality while she finds peace. Which is another bit symbolized from the bird itself. Edit: Special shout out to the fights OST, mainly Colision of the Souls by Hyd Lunch. What a banger.

@wojto16
@wojto16 Ай бұрын
My understanding of Katsuya's logic was that, as Kurosawa said, he already suspected that Tsubasa is very likely behind all of those events and knowing how cautious he can be, he was sure that he wouldn't expose himself until his plan of pitting Omi's and Tojo's top dogs against each other would come to fruition. However Katsuya made one mistake, he expected Kurosawa to act like he did in the past, so eventually join the battle and try finishing all of them with his bare hands, which is what Daigo mentioned. He probably assumed that if Seventh Chairman is really a mastermind, he probably faked his disease, since otherwise him trying to "clean the house" by getting rid of Omi's top officers would make absolutely no sense, because that would mean he would simply leave entire Omi Alliance without a leader. So Kurosawa took him completely by surprise by taking more pragmatic approach, by doing so also revealing him dying was actually true all along and hinting that his real goals are something that Katsuya failed to grasp. As for the logic behind Watase, Katsuya, Saejima and Kiryu taking this too far with their fight, there was certainly an element of making it as convincing as possible in it, but we all know there is only one correct explanation behind it and it's provided by one and only Ryuji Goda: "Real man oughta be a little stupid".

@FlareSouL
@FlareSouL Ай бұрын
So this is one of the more debatable parts of Yakuza 5. *A lot of players did not like the circumstances of the 4 way fight over the twin towers.* Mainly because the fact that Katsuya was like, “Let’s draw out the mastermind by following his plan to a T on top of the roof of a twin tower where our group can be sniped over a gap that’s impossible to cross” and *Katsuya didn’t think to choose a solo rooftop where that couldn’t happen.* Yeah. Disclaimer: *Here’s the thing, I don’t mind the scene itself. **_I actually really like the scene by itself._** But there is just a major problem with how the game builds into the badass scene.* Personally it doesn’t ruin the integrity of Y5 for me, the game overall is still amazing and it isn’t like that one Y4 scene. *There are just a fair bit of good and weak parts in my honest opinion so I want to talk about both parts.* For a smooth intellectual mind guy, you would think Katsuya would had chosen a less suicidal place like a singular rooftop where there isn’t an easy way to be ambushed from afar as a singular tower would force the enemy into the same roof as the protags are on. Like the scene tries to explain that the Yakuza are stupid so they would do it regardless but that’s gets too ridiculous when you have Kiryu and Saejima accept that not everyone on the twin roof may make it _just to draw out a mastermind._ *Like yeah I know, yakuza pride or shit but how do you mess up that bad that you think this was the only way to expose the mastermind as said mastermind could have brought an army of gunners with him on the other roof and shot all of them to death?* It _literally_ takes a single handgun to bring all 4 of them into near death danger like they suspected. Imagine if the enemy brought way more guns or even sniper rifles. They would be screwed. *It’s one thing to expected this plan but what was the rush to find the mastermind quick with following a plan that could easily killed them and not try something different before going along with it?* The scene becomes that contrived because it was done with the two buildings of the same height, none of this plot point would be contrived if this was done for a building that wasn’t *RIGHT NEXT TO ANOTHER ONE.* Not to mention Kurosawa is supposed to be the most cautious man and yet he only came up with Kanai in behind and not an army of gunners for some reason. But the scene has a lot of great moments, I do like the reveal that the mastermind was the “detective” all along. *The 7th chairman of the Omi Alliance himself, Tsubasa Kurosawa.* He gaslit everyone, feeding into many of their insecurities like Kiryu, curiosity like Saejima and Akiyama; playing this investigator role when in reality, he knew his own plan from the beginning just to set them up. it is a good plot twist underneath a contrived scene. Watase is also a highlight as his va goes hard being utterly shocked the chairman would do this. Its honestly great. The fights are honestly fun, having 4 men battling it out for the best is cool. It fits their mindsets on proving themselves as Yakuza in an old fashioned fist fight. *And Kiryu, oh man, him acting like he is still unable to save anyone in time, the thing Arai said to him how he is always too late, comes back to haunt him as he wants to jump the too huge gap to get to the injured Daigo, but he can’t. Saejima stopped him from jumping to his death and Kiryu feels hopeless with the situation.* The scene is not at any way nearly as bad as Yakuza 4's Betrayal City because at least this scene wasn't rushing through each plot point like it's a check off list. *The scene has more of a problem with how they get here as the writers just didn't know how to get the protagonists to learn the mastermind's identity without having a contrived reason like exhausting each other on top of an open space with another unjumpable roof between the two towers, *trying to fit Daigo's possible fatal wound on the other rooftop where Kiryu is unable to reach him quick on top of another rooftop to show his grief.* Unfortunately, this is the start where a sizable portion of players start to turn on the overall story of Y5. Because while most of the Parts have great characters/plots, the Finale is where Y5 shows its flaws in not being a tight woven bigger plot. Things kinda happen and *a lot of players can’t keep up with the information they get in the Finale as the game has to set up it quickly.* I still love the game but I definitely wasn’t the greatest fan of those scenes. *On one hand, it was very engaging and had a lot of great moments with a Kiryu and Saejima rematch battle to boot, on the another hand, it was pushing my suspension of disbelief for me.*

Also (as others have said) make sure you do absolutely everything you need to with Haruka next episode, including her remaining substories, dance battle storyline, taking her to see Komaki, and her final secret quest (you should be able to start this in front of Dyna Chair after you've done everything else).

Nico, Kurosawa managed to talk with Akiyama in the latter's Sotenbori office during Part 3. Edit: Also regarding how Kurosawa is seemingly dying, it's been mentioned as early as in the beginning of the game when Daigo was talking to "Taichi Suzuki" that Kurosawa is terminally ill with Lung Cancer. Hence why Kurosawa has been relying on tactics that would keep himself out of danger and relies on people like Morinaga and Kanai to do the dirty work for him.

Serizawa/Kurosawa is the biggest and most seething hater of (meathead) Shonen and I love it to death. Just imagining him watching those honor-bound sweaty Tanks of men have an all-out org...I mean brawl on a rooftop in classic Yakuza fashion must have him grinding his teeth and give him stomach ulcers and just thinking:" I hate you Bleach & Dragon Ball loving idiots so much." It's funny but on a more serious note also very clever play on the Yakuza series and these characters with their stupid, but meaningful and heartfelt fights, that mean something to these characters beyond just a show of Strength. Throughout the series it has been so often a clash of ideals, fighting as a means to understand and communicate with one another or fighting between friends/Kyodais as their try to keep up with one another. It's great because Serizawa/Kurosawa is just dumb founded and frankly disgusted by their meathead behavior and just can't fathom their stupidity. But we all can understand this as Yakuza fans or just the shonen aspect of it all, which can be so captivating, inspirational and hype, despite their stupidity or honesty maybe because of it.

And said mastermind could be on the other side of the tower with a pistol. Or! What if the mastermind never interfered? So, Kiryu and co would just lose their energy and kill each other for no reason? But this scene works because of the badassness.

There’s some neat symbolism regarding the tattoos of Katsuya and Watase. Katsuya being introduced in the nude is fitting for the Crane reveal, as it’s a graceful and majestic bird, yet strong despite its tall and lanky frame. It can also be seen as Katsuya having nothing to hide to the viewer, making sense as he’s not that bad of a guy. The Crane represents loyalty, honor, good fortune, peace, and hope. In Japan, it’s viewed as a national treasure, carries souls to the afterlife, and folding a thousand paper cranes will have your wish be granted. Much like the Crane, Katsuya is trying to make Park’s dream/wish come true and let her soul find peace in the afterlife. His loyalty is shown with protecting Watase here and he has pretty good fortune with a strong physique, a successful business, and a lot of money that he tried to bribe Akiyama with. Watase has the tattoo of the Asura King (Mahabali), in which Asura are a race of creatures beyond humans in Buddhist mythology. They live pleasurable lives, but are consumed by their passions and have declared war on the Gods (like humans, they contain good and bad, some are viewed as demons and others have good morality.) The Asura King in particular was a kind, just, and generous ruler who eliminated crime, inequality, and poverty. The Gods were weary of his power and influence, so they tried to get Vishnu to help them. Vishnu tested the king with 3 steps and asked where the final step should land, in which the final step could destroy the Earth. The king realizes this and offers his head as the final step, which ends in many interpretations, but is commonly interpreted as Vishnu having the Asura King become one of the seven immortals. The dharmic wheel with eight spokes on the tattoo represents the Eightfold Path to achieve enlightenment and the Vajra club on the other arm, represents an unbreakable diamond and the unstoppable force of a lightning bolt, which is used in Buddhism to represent the pure and absolute nature of enlightenment. Also, we have Kiryu’s Dragon and Saejima’s Tiger where just like in mythology, they are equals that cannot defeat each other in a fight.

if there's anything to be learned from mine in y3, it's to never underestimate daigo in any kind of scenario involving guns. daigo armed WITH a gun? unstoppable. daigo shot BY a gun? he's shrugging off that coma and showing the antagonists what a real cutscene shootout should look like. i'm almost positive he's just sneaking in a quick nap before the climax of this game.

It's great to see Date working as a police officer again. He was only just reinstated as a police officer at the end of Yakuza 4 and we spent pretty much all of Yakuza 2 through Yakuza 4 with him as a reporter. He's the only returning police officer character we have left in Yakuza franchise who hasn't died, revealed to be a villain like Munakata, or just been vanished from returning to the games like Kaoru or Tanimura. It might be a good time to add that like the Florist, Date's police officer buddy Sudo makes his final appearance in Yakuza 4 after he has been in all previous Yakuza 1-4 games before never returning without a reason. I guess is because now that Date is a police officer again he just fulfills the Police officer friend role.

I can see there being at least two more parts unless you want it to be a big part. You can make doing everything of the story to the point of no return and do all the side stuff left as one and then do everything after the point of no return as its own part because the finale if the final chapter is a long one but really good.

This part of the game can be considered pretty stupid, but heres the thing. Kiryu, Watase, and etc would definitely do this realistically. "We are so confused on whos who that we are just gonna do what yakuzas do best. Punch each other while shirtless." It makes total sense. Though hey we get to see Daigo do some crazy stuff with his gun. Which after being in a coma for one game, and an antagonist in another, he deserves some bad ass time in the spotlight. I know it’s easy to meme on the dream thing, but this game was developed during a time when Japan was facing natural disasters and economic crises. The devs had asked fans what they wanted to see from the game, and many said they want to see other parts of Japan not covered celebrated. So in the end, the theme of dreams and the multiple locations was a way to express the dreams and hopes and lives of people all across Japan. It’s corny sure, bit overplayed, but that’s why Yakuza 5 is so great to me. It’s more about its themes than it is the plot.

3:34 As others have pointed out *Serizawa had contacted Akiyama as well* , he told Akiyama to stay away from Ousaka Enterprises revealing Katsuya's yakuza connection (and Akiyama even pointed out how it sounded a lot like he was feeding him info to get him involved instead). It's really just Haruka and Shinada he didn't have direct contact with. 35:14 This substory really did double duty for the product placement for both the *LEON menswear magazine* (February 2012 issue) and the *GaGa Milano Watch* . While the Yakuza series has had a lot of product placement before (the BOSS Rainbow Coffee with Daigo in both train scenes in Y2 (yes the original also had it in that scene) and here in Y5, Acecook ramen, Y3 OG with Mine's Gatorade scene, *Dead Souls and the amazing razor ad* ) and since then ( *Yakuza Zero's Pizza-la substory* and Yagami's encounter with the president of Ikinari Steak), Y5 so far has had the _most substories featuring brands and celebrities_ (Kiryu and the Sushi Zanmai President, Haruka and Watami/Watamin-chi presidents, Tatsuya the Chef and so on) 46:48 Akiyama + Shinada *Team work makes the dream work!* 58:26 *THAT* pushup scene... 👀 Katsuya being a likeness character (actor Mitsuru Fukikoshi) is interesting to think about, seeing this scene... *Also, he's steaming while being naked* , was he "building up his heat meter"? Random aside, his VA/likeness actor has also been a narrator for that running girl show Haruka's side job references (Zenryokuzaka) during this period 2012. 1:03:56 This is meant to explain why there are no civilians inside Kamurocho hills when you get there. 1:04:43 6 years later, Tsukumo from the Judgment series uses Chatter to become the Florist analogue. 1:06:17 Nico, since you're not planning on playing Dead Souls (unfortunate but ah well) *this will be your only experience of actually seeing Kamurocho Hills' interior built up and completed* as you may recall Judgement and LJ never let you in there either. 1:11:10 It was actually possible to *throw enemies out through the building's windows* during that whole fight sequence (not sure if you did it and that was cut/edited out of the fight footage). 1:17:11 Watase's tattoo is of *Mahabali, King of the Ashura from Buddhist mythology* . I suppose you could think of them a little similar to titans or demi-gods. On his arms he has a vajra (left arm) and cakraratna dharma wheel (right arm), with lightning accents. *These point to Watase's nature of being a fearsome but wise ruler, open to being reasoned to* , which so far tracks, we've seen him listen patiently to Kiryu despite being attacked in the bar at Fukuoka before, and was fair in being a witness to the Pier Warehouse fight between Kiryu and the 100 Tojo men. 1:19:40 The ACTUAL Yakuza 4. Well, as Ryuji once said, *"A real man...oughta be a little stupid.* 1:24:45 The Kiryu bias is strong in Nico haha, poor Saejima 1:25:56 Kiryu vs Saejima QTE 🤜🤛 1:40:45 His past actions in Y4 being hinted at here, making him want *to prove to Kiryu that he's taking the responsibility of being the 6th chairman very seriously* , he mentioned he cooperated with Majima regarding the plan, perhaps trying to make up for totally selling him out to the police before, and now, coming here in person to deal with Kurosawa directly, by his own hand. 1:43:12 Kiryu's anguished scream here 😭 Had Saejima not been there to stop him, *I 100% believe that Kiryu would have tried to jump that building gap* 1:44:30 A question Kiryu keeps asking himself since the first game, one that haunts him each time trouble comes dragging him back into another incident... 1:48:16 Oh boy, time for Nico to whip out the whiteboard, character portraits and some red string just to follow along with the great Y5 plot detanglement episode/stream/video if that ever happens. Honestly that might be fun to do, just to test how much you've managed to glean.

I was on my feet the entire time towards to the ending. This is one of the best episodes I have seen. I was also curious as to who you would pick between Kiryu and Saejima towards the fights. The story scene was with those 4 guys were awesome and the fight scenes were good, too. I think you did at least pretty good with controlling Kiryu- you know the right combos to use at the right time against a bunch of enemies, laying it in with the weapons and furniture, and the crowd control. I think it shows the picture of a young Katsuya, Majima and Park-san later on. You will also find out more behind the story with the omi chairman and the motive. I think it's relatable to get names messed up, because of how long and ambitious Yakuza 5 is. Plus, we don't speak japanese, so that makes it harder. I mess up, too. Also, what helped me get better at timing the tiger drop is stepping back enough distance to make their attack seem slower coming at you, but not too far away to land a blow and watch their body language swing at you and learn how fast their movements are to hit them before they hit you. If there movements are too fast, I would not worry about trying to use the tiger drop. It just takes practice, but I don't think you are bad. That's if you want to get better, but if not, I respect that, too. These videos are some of the best parts of my days and those thug voices can be funny. I also look forward to your surprised reactions.

It's definitely not pointless, imo. The crane on his back represents peace, hope, and good fortune. Combined with the first half of the finale basically pinning him entirely as the big bad, the last scene with the president basically spelling out that Katsuya's always been a great guy, and Akiyama suspecting that Katsuya isn't the villain he paints himself to be, I actually think it's a good time to show it off, confirming the idea that Katsuya's a good man, and isn't the type to be the mastermind of this kind of scheme. Though granted, if you don't buy into the tattoo symbolism of this series, it's definitely just a manass jumpscare, so I get why some wouldn't like it

So it says something about the yakuza series that you can have a climax scene on the roof of a building where 4 shirtless dudes are pummeling each other silly, constant back stabbing, the reveal of a second rooftop where 3 more guys shot each other in the back.... if the scene had ended with Goro Majima jumping out of a helicopter with a steel chair, part of me would have just accepted it.
