As another OG VF player, I got a few more reasons why a ton of us passed on it at the time. 1. Soul Calibur was already GOAT’ed on Dreamcast. It released first, was a more faithful conversion, more content and just had more players. VF3’s port just felt lackluster by comparison. 2. Uneven terrain kinda took out the “purist” aspect a lot of us gravitated towards in the first place. Hard to describe but it disrupted that hand-to-hand feel, making it almost like a proto arena fighter. DOA2 kinda filled this void too. 3. PS2 simply meant VF4, we could all anticipate it back then since we could feel the Dreamcast wasn’t gonna last. Still love to see the renewed interest in the series as a whole, can’t wait for 6!
@bqproductions744812 күн бұрын
Also PlayStation 2 was just hyped so much more and obliterated the Dreamcast in sales. Meanwhile tekken released 3 earlier in arcades and had made leaps and bounds over the first 2 finally challenging vf as the best fighting game. Then Tekken tag tournament released on ps2 and a whole new fan base was born that didn’t even know anything about VF.

No one ever said VF3 was bad back then at least among communities I interacted with. They were saying that the once you got to the competitive side of things, it felt too intense at the time with the dodge options or possibly even too complicated (though in truth, looking back on it, it was ahead of the times). Though around the time tekken 4 came around and VF4, the change to having a leveled environment caused people to think uneven terrain was bad and unbalanced or gave an unfair advantage...but that was just Tekken 4 lol. Yes if you somehow managed to pull off a combo off higher terrain, you might get ONE additional move in that you wouldn't be able too, or heck, vice versa applies comboing up higher terrain too but not even close enough to be a tekken 4 combo of death situation. It just didn't sell well simply and VG3 is beloved by japan (and even loved in musical composition by Takenobu Mitsuyoshi who made both a vocal soundtrack and remixed sountrack for VF3)

Virtua Fighter 3 kinda missed its window. People like me were waiting for it and wanted to play it on the Sega Saturn because that's when it was hot property with those amazing graphics. Virtua Fighter 3tb is my favorite, it is secretly the peak, but, well 3tb in particular, it was also a balance patch and is the most balanced one (Virtua Fighter 3 and 3tb are different games). Either way the unique uneven stages don't ruin the gameplay, and i can tell that from tournaments, that normally the only stage allowed to start, is Akira's stage, but the rest can be played without any banning. The thing is, that only complements to the more strategic gameplay of Virtua Fighter. Virtua Fighter 3tb is still played to this day in Japan to show just how good it is, so much so that this year Sega re-released it on arcades with online. To like Virtua Fighter 3tb, you HAVE to give it a lot of time, instead of just playing for a bit and call it the day, 3tb used to not be my favorite, like others', it was Virtua Fighter 4, but it has grown to be 3tb now.

Honestly there were too many factors going on in the time that it got unfairly labeled as a "Black Sheep" - It followed up VF2. It's a understatement to say it was a cultural phenom in Japan to say the least. - VF2 was released in 94, which players still were playing on 2D consoles at home. You had to go the the arcades to get the 3D experience. By 96 when VF3 arrived, we now had 3D machines at home, and arcades were on a downwards trajectory especially in the West. - Model 3 hardware was EXPENSIVE. Most arcades that weren't massive Fun Centers could not afford nor justify that investment. Namco provided Tekken, which was on inferior, but more importantly, cheaper hardware which made it a more practical alternative than shelling out for Model 3 in a declining arcade market. - Model 3 was so ahead of its time, a whole console generation in fact, meant that VF3 didn't get a port until... the next console generation, lol. Sega did release press that a Saturn VF3 port was in the works, but we never even got to see any of it. It didn't help that Saturn bombed in the West, and likely would need added cost due to a graphic cart likely necessarily to pull that off on Saturn even with watered down graphics rendering. Regardless, we could not play VF3 at home while the game was hot and relevant. - By the time we got the home port, VF3 was old and dated compared to other offerings on the market. VF3 was developed during the time that developers were still getting a handle on making 3D games. While Tekken 3 is running on lesser hardware, it's production design is far more matured from developers now having a firm handle on 3D. When we got to Dreamcast in 1999, VF3tb was a straight port of the 1996 game, which didn't look favorably to gamer and reviewer when compared to another namco fighter. Model 3 was a double-edge sword. While it was indeed impressive for it time visually, it was too expensive and made it problematic for home ports. Sega should have made VF3 on Model 2, which honestly is really unthinkable since Sega were on a roll with every new VF releasing on new hardware. Don't get me wrong, when I saw and played VF3 back then, I still think to this day, I've never seen a game look so smooth. But ultimately, Model 3 wasn't what the market needed or could support, and namco proved that it was more important to be able to port a game to console, as many people where they lived didn't have access to a VF3 cabinet to even experience the game. VF3 eventually earned the "black sheep" status, mainly because of numerous factors limiting it's heights failing to reach VF1 & 2. Of the 3 classic VF games, I far favor VF3 to play. VF1 was significant for how it impacted gaming as a whole. VF2 is an improvement in every way to the first, but playing it today, it's janky, clunky, and gameplay it's practically a 2D game. VF2 is almost unplayable today by modern standards (don't get me started on it's Arcade ladder's AI) , and unless you were someone who played the shit out of it in the 90's, anyone playing it today will find VF3 holding up significantly better. It's still fun to play, very fast pace when both players are competent, and a nice break from the otherwise unreasonable long combos dominating modern games. VF3 was a game so ahead of its time, so far it fact for it's own good.

Oh hey, that's me at 8:29 . Hi. I've been playing this game for 3 years and I have some stuff to say about this clip. While it is true that moves can whiff because of height differences, that is not what happened here. Lion's 6K is very speshul and has a tendency to whiff at specific ranges due to its weird hit box despite being a knee-class move. No one else's knee has this issue but Lion's, so what a player can do to avoid this is to dash up beforehand and then press 6k, ensuring that Lion is within close enough distance to land the move. You can actually see me dash up beforehand down the stairs. I fell short unfortunately and I missed however. This move is a mid attack by the way. By all accounts this should have hit but it didn't because 6K is awful. You bring home the bacon with delay elbow, 2P+E (a legitimately disgusting low that is as fast as this 6K and knocks down and sets up oki and isn't even that minus on block) and 1K, and smart oki.

It finally added a grab system and animation like Tekken, it adds dodging side to side, adds new characters and moves, only thing I didn’t like about it was the height elevation for maps but they were trying new things to push it forward which is understandable. Out of all the games in the series VF3 is starting to be my favorite from the old games perhaps surpassing VF2 and VF5FS/US and now Revo when it comes out on PC. VF4 Evo was also good but it feels like it was a transitional time for the series same as VF5 vanilla, VF4 Evo does have a great intro.

VF3 was announced to be released on the Sega Saturn along with some kind of 3D accelerator. I was extremely excited for this game that would finally prove the power of the Sega Saturn. Alas that didn't happen and it was released on the Dreamcast instead. Its a good port of the Arcade but was put into the shade by Soul Calibur.

I'm glad you were able to get a copy of the game so quickly. :))) My game on the Dreamcast is really bothersome. It takes very long to load. And if you play Team Battle, it loads again for each fighter. I also don't like that they made the button assignment worse. You can only select a single input to a button and no combinations. That's why I'd prefer playing other Fighting Games on the Dreamcast, like Soul Calibur, SF3 Third Strike, MvC2. You made a gr8 video. I'm looking forward for more. :)

VF3tb is in Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth kzbin.info/www/bejne/p2iWamaQbdyrapI . beat the story's first building boss then go northeast china street arcade to find it (dont go to hawaiii. the story can be ignored from that point, save and reload save at arcade if low on money there. ). speedrunning, the player can unlock access and reach the arcade in less than 40 minutes of story progression. Fighting Vipers 2 is in LAD The Man Who Erased His Name. its much faster finding an arcade with it and doesnt require as much story progression

Virtua Fighter 3 was incredible in 1996, and everybody praised it, but its reputation, years after launch, was affected because the only home port was for Dreamcast (it was a nice port, but disappointed some, and it was quite late), and that VF4 and VF5 were also great iterations that made previous games "obsolete"

SF2 was out of market back then. VF was the king of fighting games for million miles ahead.

A head of it's time since it's from '96 just like VF2 is from '94.

Virtua Fighter 3 is actually my favorite of the franchise. I'm a HUGE fan of Yu Suki games. A HUGE fan of Virtua Fighter, played all of them, but somehow the games following part 3 seem to be either doing to much in some aspect, or lacking in others. They're all still great games, but part 3 is ultimately fantastic in my book. It innovated the genre in many ways that still today other games (yes, even VF 4 and 5) aren't doing.

The Sonic racing games dropping all the other SEGA stuff, like the Virtua Fighter car and Ristar for racers, and the Shinobi and Panzer Dragoon tracks, was the worst decision they could possibly have made. They've done the opposite of Nintendo, who made the bad decision of turning Mario Kart into Super Smash Brothers Kart now.

I thought when I first saw the arcade version upon release…that was the biggest jump in graphics I’ve ever seen! imo

Uneven terrain is a deal breaker for most serious players because they don't like having to learn specific strategies and combos that account for that. They want flat, balanced stages, usually with plain gray grids. "Pro" fighting game matches can be very boring.

Sega Model 3 was extremely expensive in Australia, often it was showcased in rear projection cabs like their Sega Megalo series. At least thats my memories! My rear pro cabs had sega model 3 and VF related manuals in them before they were updated to Naomi

This game looks like an early PS2 game four-five years before the PS2 was even a thing. 1996 was the same year Quake and Super Mario 64 came out and this game managed to look even better than those.

Now that I think about it, I never played VF3. Not cus it was "bad", but it was rare to see a VF machine where I lived back then. I only played VF1 (on sega genesis) VF2 (once at a Dennys), VF4 evolutuon on ps2, & the 3 different versions of VF5. I also never played vanilla VF4

@@TheJadedJames To be fair, it was only announced a week or so ago, whereas GTA6 has been 'coming soon' since PS4 launched.

VF 3 is playable in Yakuza Infinite Wealth if anyone wants to support sega and the goat Yakuza team(who is now making VF5). Bro should have made a notice for this in the beginning.

Yes it is. The virtua fighter series is the best 3d one on one beat em up.

Playing VF3 for years, I still do not feel competent. Maybe it's lack of high level irl opponents or focusing on other games. By the way - Tekken is at number EIGHT now, plus two TAGs but they still did not include low grabs connecting on crouching characters from their back or side 😎
@hurricane7727Ай бұрын
King has Grabs like that and plus He can Chain Throw longer than Wolf
@SannidorАй бұрын
@@hurricane7727 Haha, no. Not a single character can throw crouching opponent from side or back. The animation will whiff in all Tekken games.

Konami is dumb. If they had promoted Fighting Bujutsu more in the arcades and ported it to home conoles (prob DC and PS2) it coulda given Virtua Fighter 3 and Tekken 3 a run for their money

You can get the Team Battle version of Virtua Fighter 3 through Like A Dragon Infinite Wealth / Yakuza 8. Idk how it works on other consoles but with SharePlay on PlayStation you can play VF3 with people online through Yakuza 8 on modern consoles now. I don't think anybody cares about replaying VF1 so now all we really need is VF4 re-released in some way.
