Why is everyone so obsessed with the concept of "faking autism"??
Whether we're doubting ourselves due to imposter syndrome, or we're being fake claimed by trolls on the internet, or even medically gaslighted by our doctors, the concept of "faking autism" is everywhere.
So it's time we address it.

As a nurse who works with doctors they really aren't as well versed in things as people would think. There also isn't a great deal of common sense or empathy but a large deal of ego. If you're certain a doctor is wrong about your diagnosis there's a great chance they are.

I agree, my dad was a doctor who freely admitted nurses should be listened to because they see the patient more than the doctor.

A lot of autistic people are diagnosed as BPD because of emotional dis regulation and being perceived as “manipulative” cause you don’t tolerate change in your routine and/or tend to be hella blunt. I basically downplayed certain parts of my ADHD during the diagnosis cause I didn’t want the borderline label (no hate to them, they’re wonderful people, depends on the person). Cause I’ve seen and dated borderliners and manipulation is my pet peeve and I hate lying and tend to communicate each and every thought I’m having. Borderline diagnosis is given willy nilly and I suspect that it might be because people who have it will need a lot of therapy which can rake in tons of money to certain less scrupulous therapists.

This was so helpful to hear today. I'm still at the stage where I'm plucking up the courage to seek an assessment. I feel as if most of the medical help I've ever sought regarding mental health or hormonal issues has been met with gaslighting, or hasn't been taken seriously (with the exception of the antenatal care I received from the NHS). I'm certain that signs of autism have been there since childhood, but at the same time can't help but doubt my own perception. It is some comfort to know I'm not the only person in this situation, though! I really appreciate this channel, thanks for existing!

I'm on the spectrum but I wonder how neuroplasticity plays in because I feel like i tend towards being a bit autistic and yet My mind and brain and things I do are flexible and I can try new things. I think that I'm a combination actually of ADHD and autistic, but I see what you're saying about when a stigma is no longer there. More people are comfortable acknowledging that they're on the spectrum of neuro divergence

Hi, I don‘t really have an answer to your question, and I don’t know if anyone has ever looked into that because most scientists seem to only care about finding a cure rather than investigating how autism affects the brain in other ways. Since autistic people are capable of learning I would think that we do exhibit an up to normal amount of neuroplasticity. Our condition affects brain development in early infancy which leads me to suggest, that maybe we show a different form of neuroplasticity because we rely on a differently structured brain. If you want to find out more about this topic I would recommend Google Scholar, it gives you access to scientific journals, books and papers and usually provides a reliable source for information.

I was told that I was too creative to be autistic, because I could make up a story for a picture shown to me. No diagnosis for me! About a year later, my psychiatrist said it totally made sense I was autistic. ?? I was 50 when diagnosed, even though when I was 5 or so, I was diagnosed with sensory processing disorder. ??? Sharing this for those who feel like giving up on getting the proper diagnosis. I hope you find the right doctor.

I think an important point to make in addition to your great points is that with more autism awareness, I’m now able to see all of the patterns my entire life that now make sense. I was born in 74 and the only autism people knew abt was Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man. I always knew there was something different about me, but always just assumed everyone must’ve felt like I did because I didn’t fit into any specific category UNTIL I found out more about autism, which also runs in my family. I think 6-7 of us in my immediate family have it. I have a large immediate family. Many have “official” diagnoses.

Yes!! A psychologist diagnosed me at 36. This discovery was an huge relief after spending my whole life strugglein and being told I’m just lazy and overly sensitive. But my psychiatrist refuses to believe it. On the other hand, he is quick to agree that my son, who likes to line up things, is very likely on the spectrum WITHOUT EVER EVEN MEETING HIM!! But when I do the same thing, it’s probably OCD. Doctors need to do better.

I was diagnosed about 3 months ago, 3 dayss before my 60th birthday, so it just goes to show how you can go most of your life not knowing. Now that I know it is hard not to have some Imposter Syndrome. Everyone I have told so far has been very supportive but I think the worst type of "Gas Lighting" is "Self Gas Lighting" (which I guess is Imposter Syndrome.) I tell myself that don't have a lot a sensory issues with bright lights or loud noise so I can't have ASD, but then I think how I hate to wear long sleeve shirts and can't eat certain foods because of the texture. It a back and forth constant argument even though I went through the time, worry and money to get the official diagnosis. My brain is always saying "did I just conned the psychologist into a diagnosis" then I think "no he took HOURS to talk to me and was looking at not just my answers but my body language, my tone of voice and my way of thinking through my answers." If I was to be honest right now this is all still new to me but I don't think I will ever feel 100% sure that I am a Autistic person but 95% will be good enough.

You are describing my former supervisor who holds a masters in vocational rehab. She told me I am not on the spectrum because “she has an autistic person on her staff and you are not autistic”. It is sad that a person in her position could make a statement like that. It is sad that she could come to that snap diagnosis.

♡♡ Diagnosed with bpd which seemed to be what every woman was being diagnosed with. It didn't feel right and still doesn't. I advocated and pushed for adhd testing so I'm currently going through that. I'm glad you brought up how it is definitely misdiagnosed a lot. ♡♡

When it comes to internet comments, people are just more likely to comment if they have a disagreement. I think this might be why feedback on KZbin (and elsewhere) tends to be so negative, people feel the need to correct a wrong. The people that are in agreement are in silent agreement. I do agree GPs need to be better about how they react when a patients come to them and say “I think I might be autistic.” My doctor responded that “You don’t look autistic.” Which is such a dumb thing to say. Fortunately he did refer me to a specialist. I’m going to have to tell him next time I have an appointment that what he said was not great.

Yeah my previous psychiatrist called my seeking an autism evaluation (spoiler alert, yes, I ended up with an adult autism diagnosis) a crutch. Nothing I'd tried over the past 15 years had worked for my "generalized anxiety disorder" and "major depressive disorder". Guess what happened after I was diagnosed? I wasn't really depressed anymore and I was a lot less anxious. I finally knew why I struggled so badly through life.

I have to say I have been doubting if I have autism since I received the diagnosis which is when I was 19 years old but now I am 25. My family didn't believe I had it. I was sad and sitting in the middle of the road and crying out loud. For once in my life I thought I knew who I was. My doctor was really kind and sweet tho... Besides that, I have been thinking coz there is no scientific evidence to prove my autistic brain so I have been very much digging into the pattern and also the genetics of autism(which is very eugenic and so is Asperger, this term is directly rooted with Nazi). all I need is solid evidence that I am not faking this is how my brain works. also, I have been told I don't look autistic, so I looked through some evidence based on what autism looks like(Physiological analysis and made a graphic of which some of the genetic mutations relating to autism-like symptoms could result in Angelman syndrome etc... which was interesting but there are higher chance relating to physiological mutation relating to autism ) (but yeah all those are only relative in some autistic individuals, but all) Also I been looking into qeeg in Japan which detect brain pattern and can be used to diagnose autism. All it says is I don't know who I am, and imposter syndrome was killing me. After I suffered from the bully and all this, it was really hard to find my own voice besides I really believed in science. And the psychological analysis and ADOS don't look hard enough science for me to evaluate autism not to mention my diagnostic didn't go through ADOS. I think you probably see where it is going, okay I use science to prove to the ppl who probably didn't know much either or are just morons. It takes me a lot of time to reflect on myself and know that if I went all this trouble to do all this diagnosis and dug so much about autism and found a lot of them resonate with me and find some of the tips helpful, what do I care what other ppl say, treat yourself with kindness and get the support you need. Despite being autistic, ppl have no idea how autism can look different in ppl, I know coz I have also been doing participation research, we're unique and individual even though those sound too cliche. (but this way of think works and also treating yourself with kindness and don't think you're faking it helps manifest better mental health) Even if the science gets advanced enough to rule me out of the diagnosis or something like that I think this part of the identity is already a part of me, and I'd always want to do better to help reduce stigma and make everyone feel they are worth or deserve support. So take care, everyone.
