I do the same unedited raw content as well. Learning to talk on camera is tough. I started by talking to myself. Then I started talking to my camera. Then I pressed record and just did it. I still have a long way to go, but my channel is growing well, and every day I’m getting better at it.

I prolonged starting my KZbin channels because I want to be perfect and look perfect on camera. I have a plethora of knowledge on several subjects. I took the plunge 2 days ago and posted my very first video. Today I am uploading my second video. with the 3rd,4th and 5th video following shortly after that. You are an inspiration. Thank-you for your consistent inspiring videos! You rock!

Fellow Halifax creator here 👋 Great video, and great points. One of the most important things I've learned with anything in life is it's okay to not be good at things when you start. Everyone starts somewhere, you're not going to be perfect, and I found on my own journey is that no one really cares if you're bad on camera (especially when you just start out). I went from "deer in the headlights" to being semi-comfortable on camera, but I still struggle myself with this, even after doing it full time for 2 years - but I do know I'm getting better over time and regardless of that, there's people who appreciate what I have to say. Don't let your perception of how things will be perceived or received get in the way from trying out new things and finding something new you enjoy.

Hey Rob, another great video! I recently hit a huge milestone on my channel… it’s now monetised! I remember wanting to start a KZbin channel and thinking exactly what you described, “who’s gonna watch my videos”, “what do I have to say that people would care about”, but amazingly I was wrong. One day I decided to film a video, post it, and just kept doing that until people found my channel. There is an audience for every channel. Just be consistent and provide value to people, and you will find your audience.

Thank you Rob for the encouragement. After watching you I decided to sat to heck with what people think about me and just do it and see what happens. I'm 60 years old and I have a very heavy southern accent that people have made fun of me for years for. This channel is just for fun and to watch different people. I started a new channel a few days ago. Learning all this tech stuff has been hard. It's taken 3 full days to just figure out how to make a logo and banner. But I'm getting there slowly. Hopefully things will get better as I go along. But it was watching your video on People over 40 that got me moving. Just wanted to say thank you for that video.

Congratulations on getting started! It will absolutely get easier and you will get better the more you work at it. There is a lot to it (banners, thumbnails, recording, editing, etc)... but if you enjoy it things will begin to come naturally after awhile. Best of luck to you!!

@TXplowgirl-v7f keep on keeping on! I'm in my 60th year too and from TX. Living in Ohio now. When I left TX to join the Navy, I would joke that people would deduct points from my IQ when they heard my southern accent - but it was really true. I worked to get rid of it but I'm proud of it now - and it gets stronger when I visit my family in the South. AND if it makes you feel better, I teach computer subjects and doing a logo, banner and deciding on a video editing software took me forever! So much to still learn. (Have you checked out Canva?)

Early in the video I promised a free resource to viewers that I would reveal towards the end of the video - and I FORGOT to reveal it. Thank you for this presentation. Yes it is very true that everyone can tell a story (thought). Most us (the shy ones), those that do express themselves who get shut down because others don't want to hear what your thoughts are. Help close the door of expressing oneself. Now on the the idea of helping people talk to the camera(s). Placing a figure of a stuffed animal or some other type of a figure next to the camera will, help make it feel like you are actually talking to another person. Just a couple of thoughts.

@RobtheMaritimer
@RobtheMaritimer 15 күн бұрын
Yes there is some truth to that, particularly when you compare to the future when lots of people will be watching. Keep in mind also that youtube needs time to figure out who your audience is and each new video you post will do at least two things: 1) gives youtube more data to help them understand your audience (so they can serve your thumbnails up to the right people), and 2) gives You more time and practice to get better at making your videos and thumbnails. So it's a growth period for all involved! When growth does begin, you'll be more ready for it and it will be exponential. I hope that helps! Keep up the good work :-)

Hey Rob, my wife and I are turning 60 this year, and we are 5 years into our youtube journey. The problem we have is, we have too much content to put out, too many ideas, the problem is, choosing WHAT to share. We only have so much energy to script, film, edit, package, publish and promote. What we have learned is, create the package at the same time as the idea. Thats topic, title and thumbnail. If the package is not created well the video will suck. There is what you want to produce and there is what viewer and youtube want. Hopefully they are the same thing, but unlikely. Good luck, i am watching to see where this goes for you. Larry

Thank you for the support! there's definitely a line between what people want to make videos about and what people want to WATCH videos about. If your intention is to grow a channel and maybe turn it into a business, then you almost certainly need to focus on what your viewers want. If you want to make a channel as a vlog or journal of all the things you're interested in, perhaps for family or just for yourself, then that's totally fine too! Best of luck to you on your journey as well! :-)

I started to stream on Twitch and play a game, I like to play, to learn to talk more authentically when I hit the record/start streaming button. It's really hard to do a script for a 2+ hours gameplay so I have to freestyle it. I'm hoping it will train me on being more authentic because I cannot rely on script or notes :).

Good points. A slightly related aspect to this is the famous impostor syndrome. Like, maybe I have something I like to talk about but there are thousands of videos on the topic already so why should I? Or someone else does it better, so why should I? It kind of ties to the thing you said about the first videos being for yourself. If I enjoy making the videos, it matters less if someone else has already talked about the topic. Just try to enjoy the process. :)
@RobtheMaritimer
@RobtheMaritimer 18 күн бұрын
That's absolutely correct! Enjoy the process :) Also, you don't have to be an expert in "the thing" you talk about... there will ALWAYS be others out there who know more. you only have to be a little bit ahead of some people... then those people can learn from you. In fact, they'd probably prefer learning from you than someone who's an expert and may be talking over their heads! Best of luck to you :-)

I feel this way about live streaming. I have KZbin friends that tell me to live stream so I can get my watch hours up so I can get monetized...but I always think...what the hell would I talk about on a live stream for 30+ minutes? I will try it at some point, but that is something that I shy away from more than making planned long form videos.
@RobtheMaritimer
@RobtheMaritimer 16 күн бұрын
I was incredibly nervous the first time I live streamed... but now it's no problem at all. You do get used to it. My advice is to have something prepared to either talk about or show people, in case no one shows up to ask questions you can at least carry on without any interactions. But if people do show up and ask questions, that's what I find makes things go super smooth. Best of luck to you! :-)

Faceless channels are definitely an option! you could do voiceover and then it would be your voice that people would enjoy... a little harder to make that connection with people without showing your face, but definitely possible and lots of people are doing it. Thanks for the comment! :-)

@RobtheMaritimer
@RobtheMaritimer 19 күн бұрын
I totally get that! But think of this... when you watch a video, are you deciding whether you like someone's voice or not? I suspect that answer is "no" for most people... people generally don't give any thought to whether they like the speakers' voice or not.... but we tend to be super critical of our OWN voices and what we think of how it sounds. If we can figure out how to "not care" what our voice sounds like so we can focus more on other things, that would be a HUGE accomplishment! Thanks for commenting and best of luck to you :-)

Hi! Moi! 🫐Greetings from Finland. 🫐 I have to ask such a thing, (if I have the courage to make vlogs in the future) so when I speak in Finnish in the videos (it's my mother tongue) does KZbin automatically translate the language to English so that more people can understand what I'm saying? Or do I need to put a point in the settings so that people can see the subtitles in English? Kind regards, Susanna 🌻
@RobtheMaritimer
@RobtheMaritimer 12 күн бұрын
As long as you enable "auto-generated subtitles" for your video, then the Finnish subtitles will be created automatically... and then the viewers will be able to choose "auto-translate" in the settings of the video and see auto-generated English subtitles. KZbin is getting very good at this :-)
