I don't always do A&B bodies like that, but I've done C-bodies that way for 30yrs. You can roll the whole powertrain around like a wheelbarrow with some long prybars or even some old torsion bars. I stripped 3 C-bodys back around 2015 (when scrap was crazy high!) and did all of them that way. Put the bodies on the trailer and unbolted the leaf springs and went straight to the scrap yard and let them forklift the hull off the trailer, leaving me the axle and springs!
@1STLAR21477 ай бұрын
Quick question. Is there a special tool to get those hood torsion springs in place. I recently bought a 1968 Chrysler 300 and one of the rollers for the hood springs fell off. I found it in the trunk. I’m assuming the edge needed a tack weld. My problem is I can’t figure out how to wrench it back in place on the hood slider guide. One article I seen was a guy using a ratchet strap attached to his pickup truck. I’m thinking there has to be a better way of doing it!

I’ll have to look at my 68 barracuda and see if it has similar spots in the frame. I’ve been thinking about pulling the slant and swapping in a 318 magnum. And rebuilding the front end. It would be nice with everything out and easy to get to.

Dont forget to mention there are the torsion bars to pull, shocks and certain other small items

Yes, you would also have to separate the lower control arm from the spindle.. and disconnect the lower control arm struts. Pick your poision I guess.. out the top, or out the bottom. Either will require some work. His tools will definitely make the bottom method easier.

We do our 4th gen camaros the same way. I use jack stands on the axle tubes as the pivot point and a HF dolly under the motor, I use a tow strap and rap around the frame rail. An engine leveler and the small cherry picker from HF. It does not look like you could rap the frame on these cars so that bracket he is selling would be gold. To lift the whole car you would need to have a big cherry picker but If you are just picking up the body you just need a small one. You can use a floor jack to set the dolly. collum just need to disconnect the obvious stuff. Oh and if you are using a regular garage back the car in. You need room to maneuver and move the engine. Real estate gets real tight trying to move a cherry picker and a full K frame assembly around each other.
@Funtimes6707 ай бұрын
I was thinking this process would work on later model Camaro.
@famcadjr7 ай бұрын
@@Funtimes670 To remove it out the top takes twice as long. Once you get past the idea of lifting the car with a cherry picker as an issue, I will bet there are other cars this is true for. Every video I have seen of factories assemebling car they drop the body on the drive train.

I did my 1971 GTX engine/trans install from below just like you show, much easier! I didn't have the radiator or A/C condenser installed, so I just ran a couple of straps through the radiator support. Another advantage is you can run the tranny cooler lines ahead of time so that you don't have to snake them in later.

Chris I don`t have a welder, I pulled my 383 out of my 70 road runner by myself with the hood on, I pulled the radiator and fan, put a short chain on my intake bolts front to back, wich puts the motor at a 45 degree angle and pulled motor and trans. The worst part was trying to get the headers back on, that`s a nightmare alone, I had it rebuilt to stock form, and let me tell you a stock 383 in a 4,000 lb road runner was not that impressive, I had a double roller chain and the 906 heads, it did great burnouts, but 335 hp ain`t much in a 4,000lb boat, the rebuilder would only give me a warranty in stock form, I didn`t know enough about cams and the rest, so I got tired of it and sold it, what a mistake it was RM21 a real road runner and I think N96 a real air grabber car, wich the air grabber still worked once I replaced the vaccum line. I had it painted limelight with the big stripe on the hood, new BFG`s and rims, got tired of it and sold it for $4,500 30 years ago, what an idiot. Now they are just out of my price range to do another one.

Alot of ways to get the job done. good idea although you could just use a chain or some heavy straps to the frame rails and do the same thing. Not sure making that many of those kits was worth it.I guess it depends on how many times you drop the k frame/engine from old chryslers.

It’s also kind of a nice idea if you can’t afford a hoist because they are very expensive, hoist also take up a lot of room that you might not have in height, or in my case my car sets very low to the ground and I could put much higher stands underneath if I were able to hoist it higher into the air. I think it’s great idea, take it to those turds over there at Shark Tank😅

That looks at LEAST 2 ton…kinda curious for pulling the old motor out means a 440 is 750+ pounds alone PLUS the car, plus trany- must bring the total to at least-about 1400pounds on an A body … Charger must be more… just dont wanna use an underpowered hoist.
