No Maintenance for 16 months Update - Fluval Spec 16 Gallon Office Aquarium

16 months ago we set up with 16 gallon Fluval Spec for my moms office. She has done small water changes, fed regularly and manually turn the light on. WOW! This tank looks crazy after 16 months! It's crazy to see shrimp breeding and plants growing like crazy with such little effort. My mom killed it! Now it's time to trim some plants and see whats really going on in this aquarium!

I really liked the moss-filled tank! It had that overgrown jungle look to it. Regarding the doctor's appointment, I hope everyone's okay! I shadowed an osteopathic surgeon last year, and he kept telling patients that most types of back pain rarely get better with surgery. Back problems are rough. :(

My mom has had 2 back surgeries and they jacked up the second so bad she could never go back to work. She's struggling to get by as a seamstress right now. Back surgeries are rough and I wish a quick recovery for your mom.

remove the carbon , Once it is used up(6-8 weeks) it won't do any Good,it will eventually release the chemicals it soaked up back in the tank.

In the video where you set up the tank for your mom, you saif that there was a spare filter guard. It isn't a spare one, it should be used on the lower intake, just above the substrate. I've cut a sponge and put it in the guard to prevent shrimp from climbing through. Also in the middle portion there is a very small hole, also just above the substrate, plug that one aswell with something. This will solve having shrimps in your filter.

Fluval all in one tanks are easily the only systems i recommend to people looking to get into display nano tanks. The marine version of this nano is also worth way more than its price tag in my opinion.

SumGuy NamedJamie for fresh water yeah. For salt though there’s so many great options. Innovative marine and waterbox are both great. Along with the cobalt cvue and and jbj nano tanks. I’d personally say they’re all better setups than fluval The 13.5 evo is alright especially for its price. You’re just so limited with the footprints fluval offers.

Nice video. Just wanna say that Rob really is the good guy we always seems in the videos. I met him in line for lunch at Dustin's event in Lexington a few years ago. I was less than six months into the hobby, still trying to figure out all sorts of things, and I'd seen a couple of Rob's videos and liked them, but I didn't really know how big he was in the shrimp hobby. Totally didn't matter. Just a regular guy. I think we chattered excitedly in expectation of how amazing our sandwiches were going to be more than anything. The only question I have for Rob is where was Amanda that weekend? I mean, she seems as much a quality woman as you are a real, sincere guy. Had you met yet? At that point, I had no clue about your "better half." 😏🙂

No water changes, just top offs. She may have taken out a cup or two of water but no more than that. She didn't change any filter media

I was told not to do a drastic water change on the shrimp tank, could kill them? So I've been topping off the water and changing the filter media. Now I've discovered that I have these little worms. Do I do a water change, cause I heard worms don't like fresh water. SOMEBODY HELP, PLEASE!

Great video. Nice to see a complete maintenance of a Fluval tank. My next tank is going to either the Fluval Spec 16 or the Fluval Flex 15. Which is better, in your opinion? Also, any idea why the Spec is so much more expensive than the Flex? Amz has the Flex for $90 and the Spec, only one gallon more, for $248 !!

that's amazing to keep the shrimp that long. and got a question in water changine in CRS. if the tds and temperature is matched in new water, do we still need to drip it to acclimate into the tank?

When changing animals’ homes, if the parameters are the same or very close to, you don’t need to drip acclimate. It’s still recommended that you acclimate them in a bag. If the temperature difference is too much, they could go into shock and die.

I'd even recommend to your mom that she reduce light from windows to the aquarium or reduce hours of light time. It's a shrimp tank so I doubt she's overfeeding. Reducing algal growth will help it look better in long run. :)

Charcoal/Carbon is bad for plants, use as much bio-media as you can and a little bit sponge for polishing the water

With that many shrimp, that much moss and a biofilter you wouldn't actually need to change any water only top it off. Changes are better but it would be functioning as a walstad tank

Good video. However, you should of changed that bag of carbon, it's absolutely useless. Put more bio media in the space, or a small bag of purigen. Also, that nasty sponge in the pump, is a pita. Mine clogs up every fortnight or so. I always blast that one under the tap though, to get it really clean. The tank looks beautiful, mind you, I did like the overgrown mossy look too.
