Exactly! I was standing in line at a Costco food court behind some gringa and surrounded by a bunch of locals and the gringa kept saying 'no mames' because they were out of the food she wanted. The girl behind the counter was a little shocked and the people in line did a good job of ignoring her. I had to find her later and explain that the saying is not to be used in public and definitely not with people who are unfamiliar. She just thought it meant, 'no way'.
