In my perspective or well in autodale's citizens perspective, death in the "ugly pit" is fate. Even from when they were young they know that one day that's going to be their fate. There is no escaping. Only death awaits them. Which is why they try and live their best life, and why in the newer series shadow, the mom that couldn't protect the girl from a freak and her husband dead, she knew she failed in her role and she accepted her fate, she cried because she wanted her daughter to be safe not because of death.

@@pinknut7333 Its hard to see and it threw me off too, but if you are good with the pauses, you can just barely see some of the word's on the pages as they pan over some of the illustrations and if you listed to the story mom tells its not the same as some of the pages. At 1:04 if you pause right, you can see the story words bit and the end of that page reads: "the fear paralyses her. She is naked in the dark, at the mercy of an unseeable monstrosity." but that's not what mom says. there's other moments like that, right after the handy men show up and save the little girl and there's something about the shadows dances have seized on the next page but mom delves into how there's no monsters in autodale. It is actually kinda creepy when you realize it. Kind of like how most children's fairy tales are much darker than we like to tell them as.

Little confused) and, describing her face and experience to a point where this doesn’t seem like a fiction… but an actually experience, maybe even her experience? The girl is mentioned to have a round face and the disposing of her mask revealed her beauty marks, so specific and showing her pretty face, 🤔 And I don’t think it’s a coincidence. Here’s a theory: The “exceptional” women is the girl from Children’s toys future self. From a young age, she realized that something was wrong, but didn’t do anything because she was scared of the handymen. Gradually, as she got older her confidence grew, and she decided to find out the truth of Autodale. However, she got caught and ran to where they kill people, thinking that the handymen would not find her there, not knowing that many more where there. To her horror, the handyman that she was fleeing from followed her there, but didn’t see her. The women breathed a huge sigh of relief. But then, much to her surprise, the “uglies” pointed her out, making her realize that everyone is so brainwashed, that they would support Autodale no matter what. When the handymen realized that she was exceptional, instead of killing her, they amputated every very body part that she didn’t need, hooked up her brain to some mind controlling thing, and forced her to generate ideas and values for the handymen to explain to everyone in Autodale. The reason the handymen don’t make to rules themselves is because the “exceptionalis” are so smart that everything they come up with is clever. Combine that with AI, and the results according to the handymen are flawless.

Theory: clearly the women running away isn't actually the girl in the book but rather its the other way around. The girl was written by the women once she was assimilated into the hive (what shadow calls the matriarch). They use her experiences and knowledge to better control the population, and therefore reframe her story to better fit Autodale's narrative. This is also reflective about how the newest shadow comic that comes out reframes the shadows failures as a success to better fit Autodales narrative. The question then comes up as to who chose the narrative. Is it the hive and matriarch or is it the handymen? Or is it is it the person who created the original hive?

Your theory makes a lot of sense. After watching the "Friendly Shadow" episode, they take every "adventure"/"case" that he's done and spin it into a larger-than life story to recite back to the people of Autodale to make them feel safer. So the girl (as a hive mind) could have definitely spun her own experience into the book that's read. I believe the girl in the bed, and the one who gets assimilated are two different people.

Here’s how I understand it: The ‘monster’ is a representation of reality. It is a representation of judgement and being afraid to be who you are. It’s outside of the gates of Autodale because everyone believes Autodale is a safe haven and Utopia. The monster does not want to harm anyone, but help them escape from the so called ‘dystopia’. They want to help people learn that there is no such thing as being ‘pretty’ or ‘ugly’, but only being judged. The reason the ‘monster’ is believed to be a monster is because everyone living in Autodale believes they are in a good place, where no one judges you. They think this because the government has brainwashed them into thinking everyone can be ‘pretty’ as long as there are no ‘uglies’. When in reality, Autodale is actually judging them the most. The robots there save the girl in the story to make her think Autodale is safe. But, since the girl is considered to be exceptional, she is one of the few who understands how bad of a dystopia Autodale is. The uglies notice this and want to make her suffer since she is ‘pretty’. That is why they tell the robots when she is escaping again as an adult. So they can get revenge. Since then, the government has made sure there are no more exceptional people. They trap them so they have no where to go and can be under close watch of the government. When the mom at the end says, “You won’t run from your monster. Will you, sweetie?”she is trying to let the boy know that he is one of the few exceptional. That he is able to understand what Autodale really is. He is one of the few that can try and escape. What the mom is saying is that the boy has the ability to go and understand reality. That he can help save the people of Autodale.

Danger Noodle, if look closely, the mother actually looks like the exceptional girl. So my theory : the 'exceptional girl' in the story was actually the mother. When the exceptional girl was captured, it was her past. I think it that at the scene where they physically changed the woman, its where the brainwashing was. Also i think that she was the only one who opened her eyes during the brainwashing. This might mean that although she wears the mask of brainwashing, she knows what is going on and is trying to protect her son. And the last part when she asks that the boy wont run away from the monster right, i think the monster meant reality (what autodale actually is) and the robots that 'save' the exceptional girl was the girl submitting to brainwashing. So actually the monster is the reality, the truth, the hard way out. While the robots are the falsehoods, falsified safety and the easy way out. This is what I got from this. So the there are the Uglies, Pretties, and Exceptionals. The Exceptionals, from what I can tell, start to become aware of the world they are living in when maturing, and therefore try to escape it. I'm still trying to decipher what the black monster in the story represents, individuality, freedom? The monster is portrayed as a horrible beast when in reality it's the persons Individuality trying to take over, which is why at 0:54 the mask/label is removed from the character, their Individuality is taking over, but the "Handymen"(or society) end up taking that away from people. The Excepionals (most of the time) end up getting caught and their "Exceptionality" is used to power "The Source" or whatever. I think 2:31 is maybe an example of the exceptionals if they actually end up escaping the Dystopian society, losing their label and becoming the Individual they are. I'm still kind of confused about the whole thing, if you want to clarify things for me I will be very thankful. (keep in mind this is a theory) o3o

I think actually... the exceptional people are tend to be the rolemodels of society... but once they step out of line and realise what is going to happen to them, they escape "naturally", but since they represent the ideal of society they get "the gift" of society... become part of the supreme computer.

So here is what happened for those who don't know: the mother story was actually a true story hence the woman who is The little girl in the story(if you don't believe me look at the beauty marks on each of their faces), so the little girl/woman was perfect she was beautiful... and smarter than the other citizens...soon enough she grew up and realized what was going on in autodale and she decided to run...as she left the town to free herself, there appeared to be robots patrolling the outside of the city, one of them spots her, so she decides to run back into the city, as she approached the gates of the city, the "handyman" took her into the city to serve her purpose( I previously thought in my old explanation* that she was going to be judged by the mother(the big scary skinless looking human thingy, btw i chose mother because..actually i dunno) but then I noticed that all the adults have masks and the children don't so I assume that the children get tested so that the handyman or the teachers know what type of mask they get) And now for the purpose of her getting hooked up to the mother: this brings us to exrodinary's(the little girl) purpose, extraordinary was hooked up to the mother because the mother has an urge to become smarter..perfect...and since the mother isn't fully human she needs human knowledge to achieve her..his..whatever's goal. And since the handyman are smart..the condensed the story to be more child friendly. ....the robots are the monsters.... Plz comment to tell me your views on my explination*(srry)...am i right or wrong

Okay so I'm thinking the back story of it: The people who are "exceptional" like the woman and the little girl are "special". By special I mean to smart for their own good, which means they can find out how the system is running in Autodale. The robots or who ever is in charge don't want the citizens of Autodale to find out which is why the robot caught the woman before exposing their secret.

simply put, the robots are increasing the gene pool. exceptional individuals are used to forcibly reproduce (the scene at 2:48 ) while ugly, non exceptional ones are used for hard labor. this is utilitarian and bioethics end goal. some exceptional individuals will try to escape once they understand. it is possible the fact they escape is the true test, whether or not they are smart enough to see whats going on. overall, this is very well executed animation.

Wait. The line: “You won’t run away from your monster? will you, sweetie?” troubled me, not just because is creepy, but because it was earlier stated that “There are no monsters here.” so... Why would the little girl had to promise not to run from something that doesn’t exist? (more specifically that is not in Autodale, but I think the point is there) And just to highlight, the mother said “your monster” YOUR, not THE monster, specifically. The mother knows her daughter is exceptional, and therefore she knows that her daughter will be use to “help autodale” in whichever away the exceptionals are used. The big woman at the back is her moster. Is the moster that hunts the exceptionals. (or at least the robots work to maintain her...?) To try to explain my conclusion i’m going to separate what I see as the 3 stories being told, that are kind of opposites but reach the same point: • The woman was scaping form the city, from her mosnter. “you wont run away from your monster? will you, sweety?” She was runing away from being exceptional, for what that meant to people. In Autodale, what she is doing is WRONG, she shouldn’t be scaping, she should face her fate, like the Ugly ones. They point at her and do the RIGHT thing based on Autodales standars. The robot captures her, SAVES her from its perspective, because the robot knows that she was scaping from her fate. • The girl form the book was outside the city (which i’m assuming is WRONG, as the story could be easily used to scared the kids and teach them to stay in the city) finds the monster, or in a figurative way finds out that she is exceptional and tries to run away from it because she knows what that means. The robots “saves her” and take her back to Autodale, were “there are no monsters” therefore she should be happy/safe, and meet her fate. - By “saving her” they are just giving her to the Big woman, which is what she wanted to scape form in the 1st place. What they are actually showing here is that the Robots judgement is the RIGHT one, and people should trust them, and therefore do what they say. This way maintaining the ideas and believes of the society. - I struggle trying to understand why, when the 2 robots save the girl the are standing behind a small wall and just pointing the monster with two lamps. I feel like there’s a deeper meaning to that but so far i’m taking it as a permanent separation the exceptionals suffer from society. Those two stories are basically parallels and help understand the story of the girl at the begging: • She knows she is expcional, and it’s afraid of the monster (HER monster) and the mother reads a books that at first look seems a story to make her understand that she is safe, but is actually a Story which object is that she knows she should trust the robots and follow them blindly, as everybody else does. That’s why she says “You won’t run away from your monster, will you?” HER monster is in the city, the mother knows that, so does the child, that’s why she is scared and that’s why the mother wants the girl to understand, she shouldn’t run because thats WRONG, Autodale NEEDs more kids like her because the exceptionals are given to the big woman and from there they help the city.
