I think they called him "shock Rock" back in the day. And yes, he's a cross between playing into a narrative of how critics perceived Rock, while gleefully fulfilling all his audiences most depraved expectations of the genre in the process. This all played out in his legendary concept album and tour "Welcome to My Nightmare" in the mid 70s. (With a sly wink that none of it should be taken too seriously). The title song should probably be your next reaction.

Though the actual title shock Rock came after the 70's. The legend of just how shocking his live was, was huuuuge in the 70's. No doubt " Welcome to My Nightmare is a masterpiece but I would first hit his early masterpiece " Ballad of Dwight Frye. Problem is we all know this is a popularity contest and the radio hits are what gets the biggest requests so if a radio hit I would 100% say Billion Dollar Babies because it has the needed Alice Shock Value to inspire more follow ups

The Alice Cooper Band was like Meatloaf in that music was only half the story. The band was about musical theater. To get a sense of it, the live videos are better. An example being something like Meatloaf's "Paradise Under the Dashboard Lights" which is a good song but its incredible life with the acting, the expression, the staging, just a great time.
@garagepunkfan
@garagepunkfan Жыл бұрын
@@scambammer6102 that's absolutely true. The UK press was particularly vicious in this respect, and he almost wasn't able to tour England as a result. What is ironic is that during this period of time he became fast friends and occasional golf partners with the aging comedy legend Groucho Marx, who, after seeing one of his shows, strongly felt Alice's live performances were modern day Vaudeville in nature, and eventually convinced the Friars' Club to accept him as a member, as many of the old Vaudevillians were of the same mind as Groucho

Alice Coopers greatest hits comes from the 1970’s. He had 5 albums in 3 years from 1971 through 1973. “Love it to Death”, “Killer”, “Schools Out”, “Billion Dollar Babies”, and “Muscle of Love”. All we’re with the original band members, then Alice went Solo after that. Each album was unique and rocked out on the radio throughout the 70’s. Alice was referred to as “black eyes” and known for his concerts as “ shock rock”.

On incident that I remember hearing is that someone brought a chicken to a live show and threw it on the stage and Alice (Vincent) threw it back because he thought that it could fly. The crowd tore it to pieces. In an interview he said that he didn't know that chickens couldn't fly because he's from Detroit. His father was a minister and he was brought up rather conservative. He had a major problem with mostly alcohol for a while but he's been sober for years. He's been married for years and she used to be in his show. He's also a scratch golfer. He was also in The Hollywood Vampires with Johnny Depp and Joe Perry. Great stage shows.

Most notable "Welcome to My Nightmare" His concept albums are more orchestrated I would first hit " Ballad of Dwight Frye" (71) Truly haunting S Tier mastery based an actual 1930's horror film actor who was in both original Dracula & Frankenstein films (1931-1933)!!!!!!

alice was 'shock rock'. his stage persona was a crazy man...he had big props on stage, like guillotines, knife throwing, just freak show kind of things. a giant spider attacked him etc...he did makeup and was just an evil prankster, if you will. his act was more about shocking parents. the kids knew he did his show with a wink and a nod. it was meant to have humorous undertones, even overtones. vincent fernier (alice cooper), is a very intelligent guy, who knew a gimmick when he saw one. he's ridden it for years, with the same humor about it. he's also a good enough golfer to be on the pro tour, but chooses rock and roll instead. i had this 45 single when it came out. check out 'elected' or 'billion dollar babies'. good fun.

The guy is unbelievably nice and very intelligent. it was always about the "show", and man, they definitely put on great shows!! This is a classic rock staple, featuring one of greatest opening guitar riffs of all time. It's A+ every day of the week. Alex, you hit the lyrical intent right on the head. Alice was one of the first "shock rock" artists (Marilyn Manson owes his career to him). His elaborate live shows were filled with freaky props (live snakes, skeletons, giant spiders, blow up dolls) and creepy (and sometimes gory) theatrics, including an infamous bit with a working guillotine. And that's the image the song's lyrics are playing with. But the music was not goth; it was blistering (and occasionally melodic) classic rock. Andy, I think you would gain a better appreciation by watching the 1973 "Billion Dollar Babies" concert DVD "Good To See You Again, Alice Cooper". Followed by the 1975 concert movie "Welcome to my Nightmare"; contains all of Alice's greatest bits and hits and was "hosted" by Vincent Price! (that one would be a good choice for Patreon).

Besides all of the other things Alice is, he is essentially one of the greatest storytellers I've ever seen. Through lyrics, music, and his stage show he weaves tales of love, fear, humor, angst, lust, and other themes. Because of this, my favorite Alice album is The Last Temptation. It even comes with a comic book that's like a map through the songs on the album. If I were to pick one song off that album that stands well by itself, I'd say it's Lost in America. A banger and a song that speaks to problems facing yesterday's and today's youths, all with a wry sense of humor.

One thing that's important about listening to Alice Cooper is his propensity to joke with his listeners. Not every song has a joke, but the ones that do are hilarious once you get the jokes. Then you get to his serious side, and his love for horror movie tropes and the theatrical side of his live shows. The contrast can throw you if you only expect snakes and guillotines and monsters. All in all, he IS a really nice guy--with a wicked sense of humor.
@rhsatrhs

So the thing is, by all accounts, he really is a nice guy. Honestly, of all his songs, I like "You And Me" best. It's far from the most popular, and it's not even close to being what you guys call a "banger". It's a classic late 70s pop ballad -- the exact opposite of No More Mr. Nice Guy, which is my second favorite.

I saw Alice Cooper this past December. I've seen a lot of bands in my 58 years, but this was the best overall show I have ever seen as far as theatrics, lighting and musicians. They put on an event. Alice is his character on stage, but off stage he is very conservative and an avid golfer who is very approachable. His real name is Vincent Furnier, son of a preacher, and at 74, he can still sing. I would hit "Billion Dollar Babies" (album and song) as well as the album "Welcome to my Nightmare." He wrote a song called "Only Women Bleed" off the Nightmare album that spoke against abuse of women. Probably the most creepy and poignant songs are "Dead Babies" and "Steven." Babies speaks of the inability of some to take care of their children and "Steven" speaks of mental illness. "Steven" gave me goosebumps at the concert and the album version, more so. Alice is big into suicide prevention and is the uncle everyone wishes they had. He's that good and influential.

It took a while, but Alex finally figured out the meaning of the song. It’s not the singer saying he’s no longer a nice guy. It’s family and friends and the general public. Alice Cooper (aka Vincent Furnier) was, and still is, a nice guy. But the band’s stage performance was such that the public thought he was crazy. There was an incident with a chicken, and snakes became a regular part of their act on stage. If memory serves, there was also a staged electrocution at some point that had everyone talking. I can tell you that we played the Billion Dollar Babies 8-track tape a whole lot back in the early to mid 70’s when it came out. It was a great driving tape.

This song always reminds me of my sixth grade homeroom teacher. He was very tall (about 6'6") and imposing, but also soft spoken and kind of laid back. So being kids, we took advantage of that. Finally, he got tired of it. One morning, before first bell, he stood up at his desk and announced "No more Mr. Nice Guy". We all laughed because we thought he was trying to be cool by quoting Alice. I guarantee you the laughter stopped when he showed us his new board of education (i.e. paddle) LOL. I always think of that man whenever I hear this song. Glad you guys did this one.
