That's how it should be for visit visas. EU does the same where you get it for a limited duration (like 3 months or so) and you can stay only for 3 months at a time. They have programs for trusted frequent travellers where they get longer duration visas if they show that they use it regularly and leave on time and don't violate the restrictions by overstaying or anything else.

It is the people who suffer when governments get into a spat. I had my ten-year multi-entry visa to India cancelled some years ago. No refund either. It was not cancelled due to anything I had done or any change in my status as an individual. It works both ways.

As if someone traveling on a single entry visa wouldn't change their mind after landing here and voluntarily go back. This is not to prevent or control visas. This is another cash leeching opportunity so that people will need to frequently pay visa fees. This will just backfire beautifully as people are not like Uber service that you order when you feel like you need more or less visitors. People will choose to go elsewhere and invest their money where it is more welcoming,.Why would anybody sane torture themselves to visit here if they need to frequently verify their status and request access by paying fees for every visit.

Now, the government is awake after being in deep sleep. This should be applicable way back, some may need to have 10 years visa and won’t abuse it but others may definitely abuse the 10 years visa and overstay claiming for refugee or whatever. This new procedure now will affect many people where a proper standard should be in place way back. That definitely will affect many honest people who would like to visit the country but would be hard now to convince the officer otherwise.
